      I used to be the one who asked questions a lot but the teachers scolded me for asking "out of syllabus" questions or accused me of trying to defame them by asking creative questions so they would slip up and kids could make fun of them. Of course I wasn't doing any of that, I was just curious. But the teacher's responses made me shut up and stop speaking up in class.

I must have put in 10,00 hours of practice in classical music alone as a teenager so am not surprisingly very good and have ended up a pretty good lawyer too. If you took the children from say London's Westminster school and compared them with these you would have much more similarities. Wales is a very deprived part of the UK.

(by chill i still mean homework and necessary assignments, getting ahead but still having 5/7 days of the week to relax). its slightly different during the final years (12th grade mainly), though still sort of chill but can be demanding. obviously we have outliers and extremely talented students as well. It's been said that singapore is like 4-5 years ahead in syllabus material compared to australia, e.g 11th grade chemistry will be learnt in yr 7 or something. is that true ? if so, that'll be very demanding and singapore education is quite respected in aus

      I agree with Alexis. At least students in Singapore still get to participate in Sports, Dance, Drama and Music after school hours -- say usually after 2pm. Most 13 to 16 year old Singaporean kids study from 8am to 1pm with a 30 minute recess. There are also a few Physical Education sessions, special music or dance program woven in every week to make school more interesting. Every school system has it's pros and cons but in my opinion, it is how the parents try to balance the importance of play vs studying, learning other skills vs just book smart, and highlight the significance of character, values education before academics, to their children that matters. It will highly affect how children show up in life as adults in future, good results or not.

    Fun fact: Here in Ireland after our GCSE equivalent you take a ‘gap year’ where you attend school but the teachers aren’t allowed to teach you anything on the A level-equivalent curriculum. You get no homework. In this year, many Irish teenagers set up their own business and become rich, or they get good at a sport and discover their hobbies. This is the year when many quiet people become confident in themselves.
    I was actually severely depressed before I went into transition year, but it completely healed my soul. Many studies have shown that students who do transition year have much higher grades in their A level equivalent.
    I went from failing maths to winning national maths competitions in just one year. I didn’t really study maths over TY, it was just that I took a break and recovered from depression.
    The school environment was so toxic before TY, with intense bullying. However, everyone matured over TY and there’s a great atmosphere nowadays.

I was in the middle of that system and honestly not many students can actually learn anything after 5-6 hours of work per day. after that it's more of hollow gimmick and there are so many studies that proves longer hours of studying past certain amount of time will eventually make you dumber in all aspects. furthermore in terms of emotional/psychological impact on them, well anyone with common sense can expect what will happen.
      I am so sure that 10 years after the graduation from this BS these Welsh kids will be WAY ahead in creativity, quality of life, actual knowledge/skills and so forth, compares to these Korean kids.

      @@MyronChoe I'm pretty sure Koreans are a lot more educated than Irish kids. The extra time studying definately makes them learn more.
      But, I suspect Irish kids are happier than Korean kids and perhaps more educated in each of their specific hobbies. So for example, one of my friends loves writing and published a book at age 16. Korean kids who are better writers than my friend don't have the chance to publish their books because they're busy studying. A couple kids earned quite a bit of money playing as a band at concerts. I myself represented Ireland in a satellite building competition and learned how to code. I also partied a lot and made great friends and developed basic social skills. Then, I somehow managed to represent Ireland in the maths olympiad. A guy from a town near me wom a science competition and sold his project for a couple million euro at 16 and is now a billionaire. A girl in my school came second in the European Junior Olympics for decathlon.
      Irish kids are definitely worse at maths, science etc than Korean kids but they have more time to be really good at things they enjoy.

      Yeah, South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, and this is one of the causes. I'm a fan of the kpop group BTS and they have multiple songs about South Korea's education system and they do not hold back the punches. They condemn it pretty brutally "who is it that turned us into studying machines and labelled us as number one or failures... ...who is it that made us stand on our closest friends to get to the top" is part of the lyrics to their song "N.O." They have another one called "School of Tears" which is genuinely horrifying, it is about school bullying and from everything I know, the song does not exaggerate. Everything I know indicates school bullying is a huge issue in SK and that it is often extreme.

      They also don't really cover the suicide rate of students from the pressure of studying. And as like Matt Washer said, we should look at the broad range of subjects from maths and sciences, to philosophy, music art etc. The Finnish system has been well praised the past years. Although looking through, this documentary wants to focus on the effort put in by the government as a whole into education, which, can't be a bad thing.

    • @SY-ok2dq
      @SY-ok2dq Před 7 lety +41

      zogibear The suicide rate is high. But it's high OVERALL, that is, for Koreans as a whole, for all age groups, not just students. You have to understand Korean culture and what it's like living in a competitive society where there's a feeling of intense competition (such as job interviews, and getting into companies- so many other more accomplished candidates...), a lot of expectation from parents and family and society, and not much of a social security net. It's not like Scandinavian countries where everyone expects to be able to get good unemployment payouts, or disability pensions etc.
      The suicide rate among students - as far as factors go, I don't think exam and study pressure is the most significant factor. Bullying by their peers, and generally unsatisfying lives (including unsatisfying home lives) is probably a bigger factor.

    • @zogibear
      @zogibear Před 7 lety +14

      S Y I do understand it quite a bit and I know of the pressures that exist in that culture having grown up in it. Forgive me for not making my point clearer. I wasn't suggesting that the Korean system copy that of the Finnish system but instead have the UK system look at it too. Not only that but also look into the range of subjects being taught. I do believe that both Scandinavian and Korean governments put a hell of lot of emphasis on eduction which is a positive point and sadly something that isn't as strong in the UK. I mention the suicide factor as the stress and pressure and competitiveness starts so young and builds up into adult hood. It's something I feel, the Korean government may not be tackling head on as much. I can imagine mental health is still a touchy subject.

    Okay I’m Singaporean and Singapore’s education level is higher than Korea but our schools don’t end as late as theirs. Sure we start earlier but we have a lot less hours of school in a day. We also have less tuition than them..personally. So I actually think that it doesn’t matter how many hours of school they have, as long as they have a strong motivation to study they should do relatively well. If they think that the American education is too slow they can always study a year or two ahead of time. Just self-study.
    So the only difference I’m seeing is motivation and determination. A study tip from me(might be hard to do tho), is to lock all mobile devices in a drawer and lock yourself in a room and ask your family to only let u out to go to the bathroom. U can keep a water bottle beside u and then stay like that for a good 6-7 hours revising. U can also do flipped-classroom(studying the next topic before teacher teaches it). To relieve stress, u can maybe pick up an instrument or maybe try a hobby. It works for me. I hope this helped.
    P.S. Please don’t misunderstand. This is just my personal opinion I’m not discriminating against American education.

Sure, a lot of the knowledge we are taught in schools are basically useless, but that just broadens your general knowledge and expands your "memory space" to be able to stimulate it better for maths or similar subjects. It's a whole new world out there in academics. Perfect scores are like Tetris blocks fitting together for an amazing future. Good test results give you a high like very few other things can.

    Fair points but two things should be considered:
    First of all, SK has an extremely high rate of depression and suicide among teens, which should raise major red flags for countries trying to learn from their system.
    Second, they study this hard to get into the top universities, but once there, they don't perform at the same level. I'm currently studying at one of the top three universities in the country (Yonsei) and almost all European students outperform their Korean classmates with less effort. This, I believe, is because at university, learning by heart doesn't cut it anymore and learning to understand becomes crucial (inspiration vs. perspiration).
    I guess Europe and Korea can and should both learn from each other.

That way they can still ensure they have a good pool of talented graduates without too much of a backlash from parents.

      "i bet the student suicide rate is much lower there as well." We can check that. According to World Health Organization. Per capita. It's 24 for South Korea and 14 for Finland. The difference is 10 which is lower, so yeah. But if you compare South Korea to another country with a first world economy like Kazakhstan, the South Koreans are still doing better.

What's their secret we need to learn but now I've realised that although we do need to pull our socks up big time, we still have one above them and that is that we actually have free lives where we don't feel imprisoned for 12 years of our lives straight, where we can actually live healthy enjoyable lives whilst also being good and hardworking students.

    I taught English in South Korea (not at those students' level, however) and I can tell you that my high school students, specifically, were extremely stressed. They'd tell me they wanted out, they'd ask me about how I could take artsy extra-curricular activities when I was in school. And when I would be asked to write tests, my custom questions that I'd spent hours crafting based on the subjects we'd learned throughout the semester were returned to me with the express request by my co-teachers to take stuff directly from the book (questions word-for-word) as opposed to actually crafting questions that will make the students think. They're taught not to think creatively; they cram from textbooks. It made some of our conversations where I'd try to ask them to think about their answers, fall completely flat. And, the kids barely ever see their parents.
    The kids are depressed and/or suicidal. It doesn't matter to me if they're the smartest in the world. In the end, I quit teaching in Korea after my second contract was over because I couldn't bear to contribute to their depressingly deceptive system. Let the kids be kids. Screw hagwons.

      from my understanding, when the students did speak up to their government, they died as what happened in the Massacre of 1982 when the South Korean students protested against their government resulting in the government's retaliation by labeling them as communists and sending the military to subdue them with full-on Military weapons!

    • @AzuraAzenath
      @AzuraAzenath Před 6 lety +4

      That is hardly today's Republic of Korea. There was a militaristic dictator, Chun Doo-hwan, in charge back then, and those students were protesting his government. South Korea has advanced by leaps and bounds since the incident you're talking about, which was the Gwangju Uprising in 1980. The 1982 Hama massacre, by the way, was in Syria, which is far far from South Korea.

    Education is obviously important, but prioritizing it over the long-term psychological health of a person scares me. I mean think about how these kids will develop, after their mental well-being has deteriorated from such a young age. The video asks: "What does it take to have the best school in the world?". I think a better question would be: what is the cost of having the best school in the world?
