at my art school they didn't allow us to use an eraser or blend with fingers. Everybody can achieve a soft transition with a finger smudge but being able to do it by controlling pressure on your pen is something much more difficult and requires more practice, which at the end helps you a lot. As for the eraser, this makes you very conscious of your moves and actually frees you to see all of the lines you created so just like watercolor forces you to think out your move.

I would recommend really trying to take your time when sketching, and measuring everything out (can be with a ruler, your pencil, even your finger) before you move onto the coloring/shading. This can take a lot of your time, but don't be discouraged. I always rushed my sketches and called it a day until I realized that was my mistake. That, and practice a lot, because with each new drawing, you learn to observe more accurately. Good luck!

Grid method is really helpful. Lay a grid over your reference image(in photoshop or GIMP or something), then draw a light grid on your paper, and just take it a square at a time. It makes getting basic outlines, shapes, and proportions so much easier. Then you can just erase the grid on your paper and spend more time on detail and shading, etc...

I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, eyes often times say more then words can... if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it...

I used to have a lot of trouble with getting an accurate sketch. I would always do it freehand and it took me at least an hour just to get a small, somewhat basic accurate sketch. Now, I don't use the grid method, but I find just simply measuring for perspectives really helps speed up the process. For example, I will measure with my pencil how the distance between the eyes compares with the size of the eyes.
When I was a beginning artist, I loved these videos, they helped me out so much in learning how to achieve realism. Now that I really know the basics, I've been able to find my own ways of doing it, a more sort of stylistic approach. For example, the only pencil I use is an HB mechanical pencil. I love to just sit and curl up with a blanket and sketch realistic fanart. I find it super relaxing. I also don't use any sort of blending tools. I find I have so much more control and get a much cleaner look when I don't. I think this definitely depends on how well you can control your pencil and also the kind of face you're doing. For example, I love doing elderly people because I find wrinkles a lot of fun, but with younger women, there is more smooth surface, makes for more of a need for blending.
