I am back with another Do's and Don'ts for drawing a face :D I really hope you find it useful! What did you guys learn from the video? Do you have any tips to add?
Kirsty Partridge Art I learned that I'm never gonna progress in my shading if I just waste hours on trying to get a realistic sketch freehand.
Kirsty Partridge Love this video. Can’t find this video on patreon.
I love you Kirsty!!!!! Your videos are amazing and they are so helpful! Thank you so much!!!
I can almost draw realistic but it look like a cartoon...
Thank you. I learned how important the initial sketch really is for the overall success. I will pay more attention to that from now on.

You really can't rush art😆
@Jane Doe yep. Art school does that to you. Shit, I didn't even wanna do art class.
If you're a beginner i highly suggest that u trace your outline. That's how i started and now im pretty good at freehand without even tracing my reference. There's nothing wrong with tracing:))
What is tracing?
Oh I know what you mean. I did that first and I'm still learning. And yes Tracing is not bad. Good job!!
Thanks . I also trace but I always felt bad about it . And pisting it . Sooooooo.
@@feb388 i felt the same way when i started doing it but then i realized i got better bc of it.
tracing can be a good learning technique, but it's also just as important to credit the original creators of the media you traced, should you post your picture later 🤍
She really has a point.. This isn't about different styles of art, Realism it is! especially when someone wants you to draw and pay commission just to achieve the sketch of their faces.. This is a perfect example of tutorial plus if you're having a good structure of reference.

In easy way shading is the key to realism and even light perspective can turn your sketch into a masterpiece
I've learned two things in my amateur attempts at drawing, and you've mentioned both of them, albeit with different phrasing:
- Real life doesn't have outlines.
- Draw what you see, not what you think should be there.
and if you're drawing digitally u can flip the image to c wuts wrong cuz sometimes u get too used to ur unflipped drawing that u dont notice the mistakes
🎉good accurate words

I feel bad when I trace because people will ask me "did you trace it?" And when I'll say "yes" they will think I'm not talented. They don't know all the work that comes after tracing. They just think once you trace, your drawing will surely look good. While it's not the case. There's much more work to be done after tracing.

27 minutes of my life spent usefully😍♥️
Very professional and detailed, you are a good teacher
at my art school they didn't allow us to use an eraser or blend with fingers. Everybody can achieve a soft transition with a finger smudge but being able to do it by controlling pressure on your pen is something much more difficult and requires more practice, which at the end helps you a lot. As for the eraser, this makes you very conscious of your moves and actually frees you to see all of the lines you created so just like watercolor forces you to think out your move.
Aquarellina how the heck do you get it smooth without smudging??? Even if you go lightly surely there’s lines
They taught us not to smudge. You can do smooth gradients with various graphite pencils (H and B series) if you are patient enough.
teaching somebody to not use erasers is a terrible idea, unless it's a practice or a study. as for smudging, only use that to put in big blocks of large very light color in my opinion
*cough* blending tool *cough*
i use watercolor alot and do realism (which im bad at) and yes what you said is true
When I draw faces, they usually turn out okay, but they never look like my reference. How do I make my faces look more accurate?
Aubree Tanner OMG sameeeeeee
I would recommend really trying to take your time when sketching, and measuring everything out (can be with a ruler, your pencil, even your finger) before you move onto the coloring/shading. This can take a lot of your time, but don't be discouraged. I always rushed my sketches and called it a day until I realized that was my mistake. That, and practice a lot, because with each new drawing, you learn to observe more accurately. Good luck!
Grid method is really helpful. Lay a grid over your reference image(in photoshop or GIMP or something), then draw a light grid on your paper, and just take it a square at a time. It makes getting basic outlines, shapes, and proportions so much easier. Then you can just erase the grid on your paper and spend more time on detail and shading, etc...
Same

There's something special about a face... The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, eyes often times say more then words can... if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it...

When I was really young, I was obsessed with horses (who wasn't right lol) and I used to trace them.
Over the years, the shape of their bodies became engrained in my mind, and in my hand.
Now I can sketch them freehand really well. I was too young to know that was a technique, however it really helped.

I used to have a lot of trouble with getting an accurate sketch. I would always do it freehand and it took me at least an hour just to get a small, somewhat basic accurate sketch. Now, I don't use the grid method, but I find just simply measuring for perspectives really helps speed up the process. For example, I will measure with my pencil how the distance between the eyes compares with the size of the eyes.
When I was a beginning artist, I loved these videos, they helped me out so much in learning how to achieve realism. Now that I really know the basics, I've been able to find my own ways of doing it, a more sort of stylistic approach. For example, the only pencil I use is an HB mechanical pencil. I love to just sit and curl up with a blanket and sketch realistic fanart. I find it super relaxing. I also don't use any sort of blending tools. I find I have so much more control and get a much cleaner look when I don't. I think this definitely depends on how well you can control your pencil and also the kind of face you're doing. For example, I love doing elderly people because I find wrinkles a lot of fun, but with younger women, there is more smooth surface, makes for more of a need for blending.
Very useful for self taught artists like me💫thank you 💜❤

Wow..watching the second drawing she literally came alive..those eyes are beautiful!!
For the proportion just try to use a photo editing software and use the grid lines ..Then draw the grid lines lightly in your paper now you can just fill the individual grid boxes and you will have a near perfect proportionate rough sketch ...Now you just erase the grid lines and start adding details
That's clever! I'm assuming that's what the "grid technique" she mentions is. I'll try that thanks

Your video is awsom. I learned lot of things about that. Thank you.
Thank you for the informative video! I never thought of using a black colored pencil for getting really dark values. I generally use upwards of 8B. I also find that cosmetic sponges are good for blending IF you are careful. The same goes there as you said about blending stumps. Great job!
