Boat Fenders Installation How To

- When we bought our boat it only came with five fenders, all of which looked like they had a tough life, so I got six new ones. Initially the ones tht came with the boat were white, but we decided that black ones would better suite the hull colour. The black ones hide the dirt a bit better, as well ;-)
The fenders I got are the 'hole though the middle' style. The size is 8" x 20".

Hi, Paul 👍🏻👍🏻 I really like those new black fenders they look great, enjoyed watching your video 👍🏻 I hope y’all are having good weather in Canada 🇨🇦 here in Ga it’s been raining for the past month every Thursday thru the weekend the ground is so saturated with water and I have not seen the sun ☀️ for over a week 😎also I’m looking forward to going to the boat Show in Atlanta. Enjoy and have a Great Friday !!! Cheers Danny
We were introduced to some really neat plugs that don’t require the knots in order to keep the lines through the fender.
They provide a clean finished look. Just an FYI thanks for posting.
Yes, I've tried them as well, I believe. We tried the two-piece plugs on the fenders of our 400 Sedan Bridge, but had a couple pull through in the locks. As I've mentioned (probably way too many times 😂), that ship was a heavy sail in the wind and pressing up along those lock walls might have been too much for them. . .
Great Hair Cut! I personally prescribe to that style!!
Just subscribed to your channel, great video and detail oriented. Thanks!
Thanks for the sub!
Much nicer than those white ones. I never liked those kind either.
Love the black. I used to sew canvas covers for the fenders on a couple of my older boats. It looked great but was a pain !
Agree. And the problem that we've seen with covers is that they tend to get beat up over the season. At least, that's for folks who actually get out of thier marinas during the summer 😉
I knew a guy who never left the marina but one decided to and broke down. The impeller was so dry!! It crumbled.
How is the set up change when you’re setting up with a pylon or a big pillar?Would you put the rope through and tie to two different cleats? So, instead of having your fender straight up and down, it would be sideways resting against the pylon or pillar.
We don't have pillars or pylons around here, so our fenders always remain in a vertical position.
great video. really enjoyed it. already got my bumpers set i just saw and was curious. got you pegged as a retired naval officer , you seem like you were one of the cool ones though, so ill cut you some slack. enjoy your retirement and ill ill look for more videos.
Retired??? What the heck is that? 😂 I've been pegged as military, police and teacher, but non are remotely close. Watch more of my videos and you'll figure it out.
In the meantime, glad you enjoyed this one. Be sure to catch up in some of my many, many cruising videos while you're here.
Cheers, Paul.
I like that rigging.
Paul thanks for the video. Just purchased a 24’ Tritoon and was thinking about fenders. Just not sure on diameter and length
Get fender holders ,i put my fender holders along the railing on both port and starboard hull , on my boat that is 10 per side spaced 10' apart
Douglas McCarty
Thanks brother , I bought 6 fenders at the boat show
A figure 8 knot is much neater and looks more like you know what you are doing that a granny knot. i threw out the fender clips that came with my boat, they were a pain and a round turn with one or to half hitches is quicker and easier to adjust that those clips. Thanks for posting.
Perfect timing - new fenders are one of a dozen projects that I have to take on. For the first time in 3 months I’ll be on my boat tomorrow (indoors) tackling some of them. I like the black and favor the center hole type but until now didn’t know how to attach the rope. I’m curious how you will reply to Mike Peer’s comment about a fender blowout, is there enough air pressure in it to cause damage? Unrelated to this video - I’m quite envious of your anchor. If not this year definitely next year I will replace mine. As always I appreciate and enjoy your posts!
I think Mike has a valid consideration, but I'm gonna leave ours as installed. I'm not sure of the pressure in those things, but my way of thinking is that if my boat ever hit something so hard as to explode a fender, I'd have a lot more to worry about 😉
And thanks for the compliment in the anchor. When you are looking, be sure to check out www.Anchoring.com, the folks who sponsored our beauty. Mention my name and I'm sure they'd be happy to work with you . . .
When I cut road for my boat or for anything I wrap electrical tape around the road but I use a wood chisel and a hammer and I put the road on a piece of wood and put the chisel on the roap and with one swing of the hammer the roap gets cut
Good tip. And that's something you would need to get a clean job - a 'good tip'. Get it ;-)
Fender valve position comment. TaylorMade recommends 2psi which certainly doesn't sound like a lot but when a 20,000-30,000lbs boat gets pushed hard against the dock I'm sure that pressure increases dramatically. I've never seen the valve blow out myself but I did hear a story this past summer about an industry professional who had it happen to him. He said it cut deep into his forehead and a few inches one way or the other would have cost him his eye.
Interesting. I'm gonna try to get more insights at the Toronto Boat Show in a few weeks 👍
Do you keep your bumpers out when cruising at high speed or take them down?
We'll generally pull them up when cruising at higher speeds.
Paul, thanks for all your hard work on the videos. Really enjoy them and plagiarizing some of your ideas. Like the fender hangers, what is the key work to search for those?
Kevin
Try 'fender holders for boats' on Google. I'm going to look at them at #TIBS in a couple of weeks. And feel free to use any of my #boating ideas that you find useful 👍
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Found them. Taylor Made Products Tidy-Ups Boat Fender Adjuster. There are other options called fender Grips and Fast Fender.
Thanks for the reply.
Ya, the Taylor brand look like what we are using. The other styles look kinda chincy to me. We did see a unique fender adjuster at the Miami Boat Show a few years back, but I can't recall the manufacturer :-(
Great stuff Paul, maybe I'll post a video on my channel of the setup I use. I've had great luck with Fender Extenders (made in NH by Nautical Design Labs) to easily hang the fenders without tying any knots, Taylor Made Big Boy fenders, and this year I'm trying out the Taylor Made Fleece fender covers.
Yes, I'd love to see your video. Please message me when you've got it posted! No maybe, now your committed ;-)
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Just posted a hack video of the fender setup!
I just bought a Sea Ray 330. Love the boat. What size fenders did you buy?
Full video on that whole subject on my channel . . .
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Ha! So 10"?
I'll have to take your word for it. Been awhile since I filmed that one 😁
Do these fenders keep the boat from sinking? (If you put like 20 more all around the boat).
No. They are only designed to protect the hull from impact.
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Thank you so much for your reply. I watched "All Is Lost" (2013 film) and the very first thought came to my mind was this huge question: Why didn't his boat have any fenders? Why didn't he install them for his long journey?
They would have minimized the damage when the boat collided with the wayward shipping container. They would have helped the boat from sinking so fast...
Have you seen that movie? :-)
@@KimTran-vb1ci No, I haven't seen that movie.
Do you leave your boat fenders down when traveling?
When we know we will be going slow, such as when we are in the canals through the Trent Severn Waterway, we'll leave them down. But if we plan on going for any long distances or on plane, they come up.
Great video. Although that is not a true monkey fist knot. I like how you leave the valve on the top of the fender so it does not get mossy.
Like the color choices but why not just buy line by the foot and cut to fit, save money?
That would have been a good idea, but the fenders were a last minute purchase and I just grabbed the lines when they came in.
Paul, just a word of caution, the air nipple should face down. If the fender ever "blows" due to pressure, the nipple could release/pop at a dangerous speed upwards towards a person eyes, face etc.
Interesting thought, something that never came to mind. I'm sure in the thought of super, extra ultra safety, it should be considered for those watching and wanting to install them on their own boat 👍
What width of rope did you use?
I believe it was 3/8".
i’m surprised you don’t have a fender on the back corners at you swim platform
Got six more on order.
Wondering if the fender holders show any evidence of straining the railings??
Umm, no.
Just so you know, you can buy fender lines, saves you work and money, you can buy different lengths, instead of paying extra for longer lines that you need to cut and waste.
Right on.
Be careful with the blow up bit pointed upwards .this german bloke got one stuck up his terminal as he stepped onto his craft .
Good thing to keep in mind.
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo Hahaha is most definitely is .
Cautionary tail about the importance of triming ones toe nails....
Noted ;-)
Get automatic boat fenders!!
That's funny 🤣
