On this “On the Hunt” episode despite trying to cut back, I still can’t stay away from exploring old iron. This time I’m back at the local auction yard to look at potential future projects. I would really like to add a long hood 379 Pete to my collection someday. Found a nice one that needed work but sold for a little more than I could afford at this time with my three other active projects. While walking the yard I also found an old General Military truck and an early 70’s Hayes Clipper (rare truck indeed) with an old Cummins that needed a little convincing to start. Hope you enjoy following me around…
Subscribe for notifications for future episodes that I do my best to upload new videos weekly on Thursdays and enjoy watching the progress of my #ProjectSnowman 1979 Kenworth W900A Smokey and the Bandit project, the ongoing #LittleByLittle Peterbilt 359 restoration and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

Love the old Clipper! Drove a couple on the Island (Vanc Island, that is) -- including a cab over. It had instruments mounted above the windshield like an old plane! The last one i drove was hauling Vancouver City garbage in 1995, up the Fraser Canyon to Cache Creek. It was a blue straight truck like this one, but the canny owner let it out to all the equipment companies to put their experimental stuff in it -- was the first truck i ever drove that was digital and we had to download through a big greasy curly cord at the fuel pumps at the end of our ten hour shift. That thing had a 600 Cat, tridem drive, special Toyo Tires and i can't remember what else. A tridem B set with, if i remember right, 147000 lb rating. Garbage up, chips back. Thing was, by then trucks had gotten pretty smooth (drove a KW anteater before that for Esso and it was like a BMW!). Because of the extra power (for those days) and load, this was old school rough -- brought back a lot of memories. As did seeing this one! tnx.

When I was traveling for a living back in the late 80’s though the early 2000’’s I used to see a fair number of “Bull Haulers” in the southwest with a wing on the hood and enough chicken lights that they could be seen from the ISS (International Space Station) along with every piece of chrome and stainless that could be found at a truck-stop.
It is my understanding that with few exceptions all US military vehicles have been required to have auto-tranny’s in them since the early 1980’s because the military wanted vehicles that AISWH (Any Idiot Steering Wheel Holder) can drive because of the number of enlisted motor pool personnel suffering from chronic cases AUWTDA (Ate Up With The Dumb Ass) making it damn near impossible for them to be taught how to drive vehicles with manual transmissions.

All those old Generals are automatic- but not like you think. It uses an air shift where you select the gear and it shift with an air ram for you. Kind of an auto-manual hybrid. They are also 6x6 and the front wheels drive too. And I think I saw the controls for the tire air pressure system on the dash, so it's probably disconnected but it has the ability to drop the air in the tires to 8-10 lbs for mud and sand then air them up again from inside the cab.
I saw one being used to drag trailers up to silvertip mine in the yukon and it was absolutely insane what they could drag a trailer up at 5-10kph, mud, 10-11% grades and shale roads rutted out 8" deep from the rock trucks using the same road to carry down tailings

Wow , another awesome video Twinsticks , I see more and more trucks with low exit exhaust and stacks that are not connected.Normally only the car hauler tractors had low exit but it’s becoming more common on all makes now .Cheaper and lighter I guess , it’s all about economy now!

It’s nothing new ... for big companies like PACCAR all that matters is margin

The aerodynamic drag on two big stacks is substantial, stick your arm out the window at 65 then multiply that! Have you ever seen those whip antenna's waving away? It's no biggie on a dirt hauler but OTR it's money out of your pocket.

The Pacar motor is a lot smaller then a Cummings or Cat. Pacar also set up long hoods the same way no mater what motor it is going to get.
Now,,, The early Pacer motors have lots of problems so I would stay away from them. The newer ones are better

Love that old Hayes truck all the emblems and most of it was there needs some work but man she has some potential, and those trucks are only going up in value which is the crazy thing, guys are starting to get a hold of them and restore them, see more and more of them getting snapped up at the auction and bring in a good buck.
Yeah someone with ath Blue truck crammed with parts that was a restore job either had spent enough couldn't finish it for whatever reason or the wife said me or the truck and the truck went to auction....lol I am sure someone that wanted a project took a chance in it and had a look at what was there and got an idea of what it would take to finish it.
The old army truck good shape for it age and the rubber on those tires was like next to new and if the mileage was correct that didnt get alot of use, but someone bought it for a little fun you can bet, hey why not if you have a few dollars kicking around, might be a back breaker to go for a long haul in but doubt that is what someone has in mind especially with that suspension but someone will get a kick out of it.
A four car shop.... I am sure Mrs Twinsticks when she saw the video she went...ahahahah oh he's joking.... he better be....or next time you come home you might be surrounded by family member who want to sit down and have a talk because they think you have a problem your old iron addicted...lol
Well interesting on the Hunt as usual... Look forward to the next update!

Mark the 320 cab overs are a Kenworth that peterbilt took over. They are now a 560. They are both made in Mexico in the Kenworth plant. All my garbage side arm trucks are the 320 and 560. The 320 is no longer made. Just some info

I think it is because the paccar is a 13 litre engine compared to the 15 litre cummins that there is the extra room
