The 5 liter Cummins V8 was originally intended for Ram's smaller 1500, but FCA decided in favor of the more efficient (FCA) 3.0 Ecodiesel instead. Cummins had already invested so much time and money into R and D for their 5 liter diesel that it only made sense to put it in something else and that’s where Nissan came in. Just so happens Nissan was working on a Titan XD which slots somewhere between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton truck and this 5 liter diesel was perfect.

The Nissan mechanics who have had to deal with this Cummins diesel have informed me that Cummins does not make a V8 Cummins diesel that was requested by Nissan and it was riddled with issues that is why they pulled away from having the VA Cummins in these trucks. Now if they go back in with a straight six Cummins in the same transmission the problem would be solved.

One of his old neighbors is an engineer for Cummins and told my brother that the V8 Cummins that went into the Titan XD was originally made to replace Dodge/Ram eco-diesel engine. Cummins made the engine. Word on the street is that it was going to go into the ram 1500 ecodiesel but did not get good enough fuel ratings. This engine would have been produced with or without a Ram/Nissan deal. The Cummins ISV 5.0L V8 is also used in some BlueBird busses and Tiffin Allegro Motorhomes. The busses and motor homes both ran a different turbo setup than the Nissans got but basically the same motor otherwise. My best guess is they did not sell like anyone had hoped for. At the time this engine was being developed the US was also stricting emissions standards on all diesel engines. I am more than happy with my stock 2016 XD diesel 150k miles.

The salesman I talked to said the same thing would happen, people would come look, see the sticker and go buy a Ford. There was supposedly a diesel Titan Work truck that would have a 40k price point, but that dealer couldn't get an allocation that included the work truck, it had to be ordered. Before I got my Tacoma I did consider this truck since it had so many options. The only reason I didn't get it is due to the emissions systems screwing it up

They're not even comparable trucks imo!

Gasoline 5.6L DOHC V8 all the way for me. I love the sound of those engines. Wish I could find them.

Scotty, the P button is the parking sensor radar system. The parking brake is on the floor.

I’m the type of guy that will just walk up and ask someone how they like their truck. Despite what the so called experts say, I’ve never, not one time, ever had a Titan owner say that they didn’t absolutely love their truck. I know a guy who put over 400,000 miles on his first generation Titan just doing routine maintenance. The 5.6 is a beast, don’t get the diesel.

I had a gas XD and the diesel for the last 3 years and both were great trucks.

Hey Scotty great show hope you can help have a 95 Chevy Tahoe with a 350 automatic transmission when I take off the transmission slams into second and only second but goes away if I have weight in the back or towing a trailer with weight on it what might that be

Hey Scotty, I had one it was crap. They couldn’t figure out the front end and they even brought out the engineers from the test track.
The engine is crap, lots of broken cranks.
Never got better that 13mpg. Uphill, downhill, with trailer or without.
Sold it at around 36k miles.
It did pull a trailer well. But really garbage. That’s why they quit selling it. All you have to do is a quick internet search on problems with these trucks.

I love my XD Diesel truck. Change the fuel filter regularly and the oil every 5000. I go even farther, I change the oil filter every 2,500.
