  • Megyn Kelly is joined by Mike Rinder, former senior executive with Scientology and author of "A Billion Years," to discuss the ban on Scientologists reading negative press about Scientology, how Scientology pushes you to remove your emotions, how Scientologists remove toxic personalities in their life through "disconnection," growing up and his parents getting involved in Scientology, how Rinder "escaped" from Scientology, the stalking and spying that happened when he left, the way Scientology separates parents and kids, why celebrities are such a big part of Scientology, Tom Cruise's influence on Scientology, how Cruise's marriages were navigated, the infamous Cruise-Lauer moment, how the Sea Org was banning new children for a time, the "prison" of belief, and more.

As an ex-Scientologist I will just say that in my case the reason I stayed for so long was that the theraphy they gave was just something else. I would get this entense feeling of purity and perfection. I felt soo clean, I felt beautiful inside and out. I was euphoric and I felt this love for everyone around me. Was surreal. However the abuse they put you though is something else too. I started to dissociate, derealise, I felt so trapped. It definitely is a lying, coercisive, deceiteful, controlling cult that will take everything from you if they can.

Yes indeed. I think what plaques whistle blowers, especially when we're dealing cults, which essentially indoctrinate and brainwash it's members is a kind of shame, if even subconscious, both for exposing something that's part of their life and identity, and for being part the fraud in the first place. It's complicated because you see yourself as part victim and part perpetrator, which is why some people never speak out. Thankfully, Mike Rinder has, and I can hardly imagine anyone more articulate! His every word rings of truth, power and insight.

      How awful for her.
That's the same for so many who dare to speak about their experiences.
Have watched several of blogs on CZcams from different ex-members, including the dad of guy who took over from the original leader.
Their stories of being hassled, punished, financially abused are horrific.
What happens to people put on the various punishment regimes is so cruel, I'm surprised there aren't more serious injuries or deaths. But I guess they have figured out that if you make people responsible for each other it seems to keep them going.
I can't remember if it was Mike, but one of the guys who speaks out about what they went through still has medical problems with their knees because in the the jail they had to crawl around on their hands and knees all the time.
It's hard to imagine but humans can become so brainwashed.

They tried to introduce my daughter to scientology. She was at an eye appointment and complained of headaches. The opthamologist introduced her to Dianetics and how she could overcome stress that caused her headaches. She brought the book Dianetics home, which was in his waiting room for patients. He told her to read it. She was 15 years old. I was furious. I explained cults to her. She received something in the mail. I called the opthalmologist and told him I wanted her off their mailing list. He asked why I didn't like sci. I told him it was none of his business. He said I would need to get in touch (he gave me a phone number) with someone to get her off the mailing list. I refused him and said, no, you do it. You got it started. I then berated him for applying scientology to his professional licence,. and that he did not have the qualifications to diagnose psychosomatic illness under an Opthalmology license. I told him the next thing for me would be to complain to the board of Opthalmology. It seemed that this did the trick. Never heard from them again. This was in Moberly, Missouri in 1992. I don't know if he still practices Opthalmology or not. I don't remember his name.

There are so many connections between a religion and a cult. I believe, in general, people want to believe …… in something, someone greater than themselves .
It becomes a debate about philosophies and the ways and means to achieve peace of mind . That is what makes religion so personally and privately sacred . We cannot deny the right of religious faith . But, in the long run , it seems we need to approach those beliefs with caution and protect ourselves from exploitation .

In an era where professional standards are collapsing, it's nice to have a program with high standards that delivers. Having grown up in a cult like situation similar to what Mr. Rinder discusses, I really relate to the "mind prison". Unless you've experienced that mental hell, it's hard to truly understand the toll and effect it has on people.

He showed me his first check, which was for $8,000, and promptly signed it over to the Scientologists. I used to get calls from their "Celebrity Center," with attractive girls luring me down to the "org." When he split with that gang, they harassed him for years, constantly writing libels about him. I have come to know Mike over the years as he helped me when I reached out during my my own lifelong involvement and exit from the church in 2013/14. (My mother worked with Hubbard mid 1950's & I was born into the cult in 1963). I can truly say Mike is a man among men. The humongous risk to his life, liberty and freedom by escaping Scientology, exposing their abuses and helping others to do the same cannot be quantified in words. His resolve to keep on going, keep on supporting others who are finding their way out and keep on exposing the insanity and abuses of Scientology is beyond admirable.
Mike has always been there for me when I've needed him - supportive, interested, empathetic and always willing to help. Last year he came to my rescue once again when I reached out to him urgently needing help with a dire family situation. There was NO hesitation from Mike and because of his HUGE support (as well as many folks who are regulars on Mike's blog), we were able to pull off the virtually impossible. I am truly grateful and indebted to everyone who came to my aid and assistance thanks to Mike and his army of supporters. (If you happen to read this, Mike, - or anyone else who was involved in helping me at the time, I am so sorry for being "off the radar" for a while - I promise to send you all an update very soon - I have not forgotten).

Mid 80s. I recall a place called “Dianetics” in my neighborhood.. and they had this large sign out front. “Come get a free personality test” My mom, even then knew that was Scientology and a cult. My bff was born and raised until the age of 4-5. Her dad was VP of marketing for the church .. and owned his own business and worked directly for LRH. She’s told me there are so many non descript building that Scientology owns. And uses to rope people in. Thankfully her dad saw the light and left the cult but not without his life and his family being completely destroyed. 30+ years later he has yet to recover and the cult has his entire life and business intertwined within Scientology. His business shut down… his marriage failed. He sunk into a deep depression.
Glad your spidey senses were correct..
At one point my friend actually dated Leah Remini. And I recall he and his sister attending these conferences where they weren’t allowed to leave for 12 hours to pee. As I reflect. Sounds like a Segway into Scientologist.

He may have lost at that time he made a decision, but as a fellow escapee, I can assure you he sees it more of a gain than a loss. Yes, he "lost" his children - but the church ensured they weren't ever really HIS children from the time of their birth - they belonged to the church. I understand how he feels about leaving them though - the pain cannot be underestimated. I lost my sister and many, many lifelong friends. But the silver lining is that as a result of leaving, he has also gained so much - his freedom, a beautiful new family, his human rights & dignity restored, no more abuse and brainwashing - and the opportunity to exercise his 1st amendment rights. Not only that, but he also gets to help others in their escape from the abusive cult too (he was VERY instrumental in my journey out - and I live on the other side of the world - so his influence is widespread).

I say this because a popular Italian CZcamsr I follow made a video about their practices (in particular she recounted stories of abuse that had appeared in the news and in the courts, therefore not imagined by her) and she later took it down. When asked repeatedly by the followers where that video was, she made a new video explaining that she had been threatened by Scientology (both the American hq and an Italian subsidiary), with innumerable letters sent by their attorneys. She consulted her own attorney who advised her to take down the video and avoid costly legal fees. Her public explanation was a way for her to shed even more light on what Scientology is all about.

Mike Rinder is a hero! I'm sorry he had to endure so much pain in his life to bring this to light. In the 80's on State Street in Santa Barbara, CA Scientologists were giving personality tests. They didn't say who they were, and I LOVED personality tests, so I went into some dark room and took a test. Afterward, they basically tried to sell me one of Ron L's books. I didn't want it, and felt it was a bait and switch, so they began brow beating me to buy this book. They kept lowering the price to get me to buy it, even saying "You can't even afford $2.50? You don't have that in your purse?" One thing about me; I don't like being pressured. I left, book free. But if I had been more impressionable, I would have been bullied into giving them my money. The sad part is, knowing what I do now, that the person trying hard sell me that book, was probably facing much more abuse than I, for not selling enough. Did they even eat that night? I hope this interview and Mike's book helps people to wake up to the truth!

After a short while I expressed that I wanted to leave because he was acting aggressively toward me while interogating me about personal information that I refused to answer. He would not let me leave. I got up and went toward the door. He blocked the door with his body. My panic level was rising. I demanded he open the door. He locked it. I started yelling at the top of my lungs hoping someone would open the door. I clearly remember literally thinking I might be abducted. After about 5 solid minutes of this he finally opened the door. That was the end of me ever considering anything to do with becoming involved with Scientology.

@@korvgubben274 😂🤣 Your BS would’ve probably worked in the past. She has mobility loss and nerve damage? Give me a break. DV should be prosecuted 100% of the time, and the perpetrators should be jailed, however the same thing should happen to the people who lie and try to destroy the lives of the innocent. That would be Rinder’s ex-wife, his daughter, and the ‘church’ of Scientology. I happened to watch the documentary that was being made when Mike Rinder was verbally assaulted by his ex-wife, his son and members of Scientology. John Sweeney, from the BBC recorded the whole thing. And the police were called and saw the red spot on her arm, because they wouldn’t move to let them leave, so she got jostled around, not “assaulted.” The police didn’t believe the ex-wife, or any of the Scientologists… and she only had a red spot on her arm. You people are delusional. Who would want to join your organization, knowing you have to pay to get to different levels of info, and then find out we were thrown into volcanoes by an alien, anyway? And if you want to leave, you get harassment, and your own family disconnects from you… no thanks!

I was in a "high demand religion" yes, it could fit the definition of a cult, for almost 20 years. (19-39).
Maybe the saddest part about leaving, is that you have to leave all the good aspects of the organization to leave the bad.
The good and bad is so deeply bonded together.
    You can't leave part.
    You leave it all.

Thank you for bringing Mike Rinder on. He is a hero. I was in Scientology for roughly 10 years, though the last five or so had more and more serious doubts. I was not in the Sea Org, but had several friends who were.
When I was still a Scientogist who trusted L. Ron Hubbard, I worried that he would die and a sociopath (called "SP" in Scientology) would rise to take his place. Sociopaths do tend to rise to positions of power, and I had no reason to think Scientology would be immune to that. From what I've seen and heard of David Miscavige, I think my concern about a sociopath taking over Scientology came true.
Since those days I've long since discarded 90% of Scientology anyway. But I think Scientology is being led by an "SP," named David Miscavige.

So if I had to pick, as I’ll read both..I’d be more inclined to buy his book first. The celebrities, I feel were sheltered from the horrid abuse .. that the celebrities did not. They were PR for the “church” .. but again I adore rite amazing pair. They bring so much value to speaking and giving voices to those that never had one.
