Scientology: Fair Game?

  • Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard, once defined the religion as being in service of ‘a civilisation without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights’.
Almost 60 years since its foundation, though, Scientology has become a uniquely contentious phenomenon - with many questioning its status as a religion, cult or business, and with a reputation for fiercely defensive, litigious and coercive reactions to criticism. One of the first to feel the Church’s wrath was Paulette Cooper - whose 1971 book, The Scandal of Scientology, saw her become the target of an elaborate plot which set out to destroy her credibility, frame her and land her with a 15 year prison sentence. Codenamed ‘Miss Lovely’ by Church operatives, Cooper is now the subject of investigative journalist Tony Ortega’s book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely.
Ortega is a long-time chronicler of Scientology, and one of its leading scrutineers. Featured in Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary Going Clear, he’s the executive editor of TheLipTV and former editor-in-chief of The Village Voice. He visits Melbourne - where the world’s first inquiry into Scientology was held in 1963, and Scientology was first banned in 1965 - for a chat with Steve Cannane, who’s currently writing a book on Scientology’s history in Australia.

Dominico Caro Back when they had a children’s Sea Org even younger kids signed “billion year contracts”. Jenna Miscavige (David’s niece) who left Scientology wrote an excellent book that gives you a good idea of how kids & teens are treated in Scientology. Teenagers are still being told to drop out of high school & join the Sea Org (Scientology’s slaves). It’s sick.

Get into Scientology via Tony Ortega and Leah Remini and realize that many truly can't get away that easily. Only the really rich and higher ups get to live off-campus. People have o plot their escape well to leave. Check out information on David Miscavige and his wife Shelley - the latter who hasn't been seen for years. Lisa Marie basically stuck him into scientology (she was into it big time) he suffered depression for years because of what he had to go through when he was in there. It's telling that she supposedly broke away from the Scientology church right after his death. I haven't heard anything more about it since, so who knows if she really did quit them. Elvis being Christian would've had a fit if he'd known that Pricilla got Lisa involved in Scientology! I see now where some of the millions Lisa inherited went now! I lived in Clearwater Florida when Scientology moved into the Fort Harrison Hotel and made it into it's world organizational center. In my opinion, the striking thing about that move was in my entire life, I have never seen a "church" that needed guards with machine guns on the roof overseeing the move.
I don't know if the newspaper archives of the now defunct Clearwater Sun newspaper are still available but there were photos there. This was around 1974 / 75. Another place to look would be the St. Petersburg Times, now known as The Tampa Bay Times. They may have something in their archives.
The Mayor of Clearwater, at the time, Gabriel Cazares, was a staunch, vocal critic and had suffered a shitload of harassment where they even went through his trash looking for dirt on him. Not very many non-scientologists, at the time, bought their shit because he was well respected then.

A video was released recently that showed how they fit 11 people into an incredibly small hotel room that has just one bathroom! The CZcamsr See Aaron Smith-Levin discussed his experience in one of those same hotel rooms and explained why it can cost up to a thousand dollars a month to be there and do training and then work in the evenings or weekends!
See his Growing Up in Scientology channel for balanced discussions and analysis. He just passed 100k! It was on his channel that I found the phrase, "The Aftermath Foundation can help you if you blow," which is more helpful than yelling "Xenu!" at people. Offering something helpful is better than confronting them with things that their training makes them shut down on contact with.
Especially if people in the Sea Org leave or, in Scientology jargon, blow, they'll just owe even more money to Scientology, and will have difficulties finding a place to live, etc. The Aftermath Foundation can help them with that and a million other small difficulties that they'd run across outside of CoS, which can add up pressure quickly, especially if their family is still in Scientology and considers them suppressive people.
Aaron's heart-rending story can be seen on Netflix (in the US at least) in the first season either episode three or seven. Their neighbor, who was a fellow Scientologist at that time, was more concerned about how their disconnection (shunning) was going to affect his dog rather than his small children! Sigh.
