  • Hey everyone!
    Sorry for the long delay in posting.... lots of exciting things happening the background.
    This episode showcases the weeks leading up to our departure from Washington aboard our sailboat, Maya. We cover some of our trip preparation, which includes installing a Katadyn Powersurvivor 40e watermaker. We also meet up with Cohohoho sailboat rally boats in Port Townsend for a proper send off, before heading west out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca en route to southern waters.
    We hope you enjoy this episode! If you want to help support us and the making of these videos, shopping in our store or donating to our virtual tip jar under the "Support" Page at CruisingMaya.com

    How do you guys only have 4K subscribers?! Loved the drone footage, the mix of projects and sailing, and the editing all around. As a fellow Washingtonian, I've always wondered why I never hear of or see more passaged down to Mexico or So Cal from the northwest. Most other sailing channels I follow are east-coast located so they have the luxury of hopping around in the Caribbean forever. Here's to a safe journey!

    I have always agreed with your choices of equipment including the Alberg 37, Portland Pudgy dinghy, and Honda 2.4hp outboard - and am really impressed with your choice of water maker - never seen a unit that is so small and power efficient - nice choice again.

    • @CruisingMaya
      @CruisingMaya  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you so much! We carefully selected every major piece of equipment and gear. For us, price is a major factor, but also longevity- our choices are basically the intersection of quality and value, of which we are happy with all of our purchases. The watermaker was a big purchase but proved invaluable down in the desert.

    • @UUBrahman
      @UUBrahman Před 2 lety

      @@CruisingMaya That Honda 2.4hp, if you bought a new prop, and shaved down the plastic on the old prop so that it could take a belt, then fit it into a frame to run a 25amp alternator (about 1hp) that would give you an alternative way to charge batteries when you are down in Mexico.

    • @CruisingMaya
      @CruisingMaya  Před 2 lety +1

      @@UUBrahman there's a thought! Never occurred to me to put the outboard to work electrically! thankfully our supercharged alternator with lithium batteries can charge about 100AmpHrs an hour so we have lots of juice to work with!

    • @CruisingMaya
      @CruisingMaya  Před 2 lety

      We left Port Townsend on Sept 1.
      Typically the weather and wind are calmer off the coast in July and August, but September allows for more wind which helps the sailing. The Coho rally has always left late August/early September.

  • @oOO-dq7my
    @oOO-dq7my Před rokem +1

    I want to ask for your advice on offshore liferafts for the trip from BC to Mexico.
    I'm on a 26' sloop with a tight budget and not sure where I'll go from Mexico or when. I don't really want to buy a life raft as I'll be a maximum of 200 miles offshore with AIS and an EPIRB and probably a drysuit as well as a dinghy. My reluctance to get the liferaft is that it probably won't be of much use if I spend several years in Mexico as I probably will before heading off to the South Pacific. Seems like on the USA coast, coast guard will be very close in case of emergency and in Mexico, probably thousands of cruisers nearby. Would much rather invest the money or put it toward replacing my ancient sails or other things.
    What's your take on it?

    • @oOO-dq7my
      @oOO-dq7my Před rokem

      Oh and I'd get a life raft before heading into the South Pacific. Would definitely have to return to Canada to work in the off season.

    • @CruisingMaya
      @CruisingMaya  Před rokem +1

      I think you have a good plan with your drysuit, dinghy, and communication equipment. We do not have a liferaft, for the same reason that we are on a budget, and plan on spending a significant time in Mexico. I would put money towards sails or boat systems.
      You can also hook up with some other boats that are also heading south.... although the reality of that situation is boats will spread apart over time.
      I really liked having an AIS transponder (Tx and Rx) out there- you can see other ships and they can see you. It's a nice feeling knowing you are on map- especially should anything go wrong. Lastly, I would make sure your VHF is in good working order- it's a lifeline out there.
      Thanks for your question and we appreciate you watching our channel! Cheers.
