Heart and Soul -- Traditional piano duet with all parts

- In my small rural elementary school, we had music class several times a week. But it wasn't in music class that I learned how to play Heart and Soul. No -- it happened before and after gym class. Our class lined up in the narrow hallway next to the gym on the polished green and black checkered tile floor. We tried to stand quietly as we waited for our teacher to be ready to begin gym class. But jammed in the narrow hallway there was an 'old clunker' of a piano. Several ivories were missing, the wooden appliqués were chipping off and the tones were wobbly and out of tune. But it was a piano we had access to. No one stopped us from playing it. In the absence of our teacher -- who knows what she was doing, maybe gathering gym equipment -- we kids had enough time alone with that piano to pass on many rote gems of music. Heart and Soul was one. I was one of the lucky kids who was also in piano lessons, but there were many who weren't. In these moments we all learned how to bang out a few decent tunes. It was the piano equivalent of playground chants, skipping games and clapping songs. It was an oral tradition, kid to kid. I wonder these days if any of that is still going on? I loved playing Heart and Soul! I played it endlessly at home, and because I had no duet partner, learned how to play the whole thing on my own (bouncing my left hand the octave between the bass line and chords while my right hand played the tune). I later used it to memorize the primary chords and as a shortcut to find relative minors. Because it's such a useful tune, I've created an entire Heart and Soul unit, based on my own experiences with this music as a child. I hope you have fun and learn a lot! ~ Rebekah Maxner, composer and piano teacher.

...' Heart and soul, I fell for this version of HEART and soul, the BEST that I've HEARD so FAR, it warms my heart and soul, oh so, oh so '...lol
Thank-you! I'm so glad this warms your heart! Your comment warms mine!
I'm an extremely rusty intermediate piano player and teaching my grand kids how to play this duet. They haven't had any formal teaching-yet- but were fascinated when my daughter and I played this duet. They caught on to the (I don't know what you call the part that the person plays sitting on the right of the bench) one handed version super quick. I'm going to text their mother a link to this video. PS: I also watched and liked your video of Fur Elise by a young student. So funny because I also used counting to teach the grands Heart and Soul. You seem like a great teacher. Thank you!
Thank-you! Passing it on through family -- that's how it's done! Your grandkids are lucky to have you! Good luck with this project. :)
Hoagie Carmichael (1899-1981) wrote this tune. A songwriter and jazz pianist, he was born this week in November 1899. 'Heart and Soul is probably his best-known tune, played over and over in school hallways and church basements on old upright pianos which badly needed tuning. Ah, but we all remember it and likely tried to be one of the players in this duet. Click on the link below to listen to one of many versions..
BTW, he was good friends with Bix Biederbeke (1903-1931), a talented jazz musician from Davenport.
This is great info, thanks! That's definitely how I learned it!
The best rendition of this piece, that I've heard, I enjoyed listening to it almost as much as the lady playing the piano, and that's saying something. 🎵🎶👏👏
Thanks so much! :)
Love it
Wow ❤

@@James.G.Ireland Thanks so much!
Finally someone who plays the WHOLE version. This is the one I know and I‘ve never seen this on YT before, THANK YOU!
That's cool that this is the one you know! I only learned the second tune from a piano student in the early 2000's and I love it so much. I'm glad this is the version you know!
Thank you for posting this. I've been trying to learn this song with someone else and all we could find were these "tutorials" where they do a bunch of extra stuff that overcomplicates it. This keeps it simple, which actually makes for a better tutorial.
So glad this helps! Have fun playing it!
This is awesome!!!

@@RebekahMaxner are there pdfs of heart and soul? I can only see parts of the song break down.
@@emmanuellalabemma4700 I don't have written music for the original popular song upon which the "traditional" folk piano duet is based. My series and printables are for the traditional duet only and are found in the printables section of my blog. Here's that link. rebekah.maxner.ca/printables/#heart-and-soul
