    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Josh (Tom Hanks) and his boss (Robert Loggia) play a huge electronic piano, to the delight of shoppers.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
More than anything else, 13-year old New Jerseyite Josh (David Moscow) wants to be "big". That's the wish he makes at an odd-looking amusement pier fortunetelling machine. The next morning, Josh wakes up-only to discover that he's grown to manhood overnight! (At this point, the part is taken over by Tom Hanks). Still a 13-year-old mentally and emotionally, Josh decides to hide out in New York City until he can figure out what to do next. He lucks into a job with a major toy company run by kid-at-heart McMillan (Robert Loggia). By cannily bringing a child's eye view to McMillan's business, Josh rises to the top-and in process, he falls in love with fellow employee Susan (Elizabeth Perkins). But he's still a kid, and he'd like to go back to his own world and own body. Written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, Big proved a crucial success for budding director Penny Marshall, who'd work harmoniously with Hanks again on the radically different A League of Their Own. The cinematography was by Barry Sonenfeld, who went on to become a director himself with The Addams Family. That Big was heavily reliant upon the input of Tom Hanks and Penny Marshall was proven by the failed attempt to turn the property into a Broadway musical.

What melts my heart about this scene is the innocence. The older gentleman is attempting to talk business and notices Tom Hanks’ character embracing fun. They both just take a minute from reality and enjoy life at its finest. No judgment, no negativity, just two grown men embracing youth and having the best time.

Years later my school started up a music class and it had a piano in it, so l told my friend who had just began piano lessons to try to learn this song from his teacher, teach it to me, and then we could use it to get girls. lol To my shock he learned it in a single weekend, then taught it to me, and the 2 of used play it every day in music class and left the girls absolutely stunned. Good times. Lmao

    • @ob2kenobi388

Fully agree. A lot of movies (especially nowadays) put too much weight on being "perfect". In real life, people stutter, people trip, people forget the simplest things, and people make mistakes on the piano. Those notes that light up by accident don't "ruin" the scene, they make it more real and more human-as if you were actually witnessing it in person. Authenticity and candidness at their finest.

What I think makes this scene truly transcendent and timeless is how authentic it is. You can see (especially tom’s face) how focus they are on the steps, the tiny off step chords in the back that do not detract, but add to its delight, specifically when Tom hits the wrong note with his right foot in “chopsticks” and then corrects it. It’s so genuine it hurts. You can’t help but watch them with a big fat smile on your face

Also the humming you can hear, even before they really go for the humming/half grunting is delightful! The way they prep themselves for the heart and soul piece, the softness of it all until chopsticks, I especially love the Genuine bit of actor appreciation when they meet in the middle mid climax of heart and soul before you can hear Tom? Humming, just lovely!

Such a versatile actor, incredible in Scarface, Big, The Sopranaos, Lost Highway and many, many more. He could play a kindly grandpa or a gangster without skipping a beat. One of those actors who everyone could see was really a nice guy, but he was such a good actor if he played a bad guy, you still believed it. One thing is certain he won't be forgotten for a long time, least of all that when Tom Hanks passes away, they'll show this clip for him too and the great Robert Loggia's name will be mentioned in the news once again. 'Tom Hanks will always be fondly remembered for this classic scene from 1988's Big, acting alongside the legendary Robert Loggia'.

Many years ago, I saw him get very angry. He was on a TV show called "Mancuso FBI." Under US federal law, permission must be obtained to use the words Federal Bureau of Investigation, or the letters "FBI." The crew played a joke on him. The had a couple of actors play FBI agents coming to arrest him for violating that law . He was getting so angry because he was being "arrested" when the producers should of gotten clearance for the use of those. He calmed down once he realized it was a joke.

It's amazing to me how "Heart and Soul" always seems to bring musicians together in beautiful ways. It's that one song that, sure, amateurs will show off when they don't know much. But it's also that song that's better with a duo and just seeing the connection between that duo, regardless of their skill. This scene is an example of that. But there's also a scene from the Tim Minchin series "Upright" that shows the connection between two opposite people even better. The song has a very proper title. It's lovely way to connect opposing forces in any way possible. ❤

Yes, I'm so sick of CGI superhero movies and 3D animation monopolizing the big screen. These were the top ten grossing movies of 1988:
      1. *Rain Man* (dramedy)
      2. *Who Framed Roger Rabbit?* (live action/animation/comedy/film noir)
      3. *Coming to America* (comedy)
      4. *Big* (comedy/fantasy)
      5. *Twins* (comedy)
      6. *Crocodile Dundee II* (adventure/comedy)
      7. *Die Hard* (action)
      8. *The Naked Gun* (comedy)
      9. *Cocktail* (drama/romance)
      10. *Beetlejuice* (dark comedy/fantasy)
I weep. RAIN MAN even won Best Picture, for God's sake! How many Oscar-nominees make it on the list these days?
