Robin's Rainy Day composed and performed by Rebekah Maxner

Nowhere is the joy of spring more evident than in a robin on a rainy day. But birds aren’t as elegant on the ground as they are in the air, and this robin is hopping and bopping around searching for yummy little worms. The chord progression sounds a little like 50s pop music and the articulation is excellent for shaping two-note slurs, technique that’s useful in all styles of piano music. Level...

Farewell composed and played by Rebekah Maxner [Level 4]
1892 he settled as piano teacher in Sutton Hoo Woodbridge England, 1894 he married violinist Laura Thypswith (1872-1925), their happy marriage remained childless, after the death of his wife he returned to Kniphausersiel, he was buried at his request in the open sea, in his last letter he wrote "No grave stone in memory of me, my waltz shall be my grave stone"
You should write a book. :)
[At his 21st birthday, on 24 April 1890 he wrote to his cousin in London: "This morning, on my birthday, I have completed my waltz, so you can congratulate me twice. It may look small, but I have a feeling that I have put into it all I am only able. At eight o'clock in the morning it was time. Have all other works solemnly burned in the oven, the three symphonies, the opera and everything else. The first copy of course I will send you, the next will go to the big publishers tomorrow morning". Between 1890 and 1900 he tried to publish his composition without success. He eventually moved forward to take the immense triumph of his work alone by quasi oral tradition. His piano students have not tired of playing the flea waltz over and over again and contributed significantly to the success of the work. Around 1905 it was already known throughout Europe and spread with incredible speed in the overseas countries. In 1912 Loh wrote to his cousin "If I would only get a penny whenever my piece is played somewhere, I could buy the whole of England"]
This is so awesome. Love it!
Flohwalzer (F.Loh walzer) (Vlooienwals) (Flea waltz). Piano. 1876, finished 1890 called F. Loh's opus magnum performed by Ferdinand Loh, recorded in 1896 edited and arranged as thesis/dissertation by Helmut K. H. Lange, published by Sikorski, Hamburg 1974
You've added some very creative content. F.Loh = floh (german for flea). And I'm not sure exactly why it's called a "waltz" -- perhaps a joke? Stylistically, it's a march.
I can so hear the clock sounds! Love this creativity!
Thank-you! This one was so fun to compose! I wrote this early in my career and only just found it in a sketchbook and whipped it into shape!

I believe you already have it -- if you have the first edition of Rock the Boat, it's there.
smile-inducing!
Thanks, Amie! I was nearly laughing during this take -- playing in ensemble is already fun -- this guy brought his superhero stuff to brighten the video -- and his mom (our videographer) ran into my book shelf with a clang as she panned. It was crazy fun!
I'm an extremely rusty intermediate piano player and teaching my grand kids how to play this duet. They haven't had any formal teaching-yet- but were fascinated when my daughter and I played this duet. They caught on to the (I don't know what you call the part that the person plays sitting on the right of the bench) one handed version super quick. I'm going to text their mother a link to this video. PS: I also watched and liked your video of Fur Elise by a young student. So funny because I also used counting to teach the grands Heart and Soul. You seem like a great teacher. Thank you!
Thank-you! Passing it on through family -- that's how it's done! Your grandkids are lucky to have you! Good luck with this project. :)
“The band was still playing and I guess all of the band went down. They were playing autumn then.” -Harold bride, Titanic’s junior wireless operator

Thank-you, John! It's a joy to share music and I'm glad you're listening! :)
Yes and no. Lots of notes that don't sound good. How do you know aheadk of time.
For first time improvisers, being afraid to try just because they might play a note that sounds 'not so good' is the biggest inhibitor. I'm encouraging people to jump in, try, make lots of noise, play notes that sound bad. Keep trying until you begin to hear sounds you like better. By improvising a lot your fingers and ear will get connected. But this will take time. Also, it's possible to turn notes that sound 'not great' into notes that sound great by changing direction, stepping to a better sound (treating them as a non-chord tones, for example). Also, with all sounds, qualifying them as 'good' or 'not as good' is a matter of taste. Sometimes the best music is the unexpected. The best way to improvise is honestly on one single repeated key, then add one at a time when you feel comfortable.
Beautiful composition and performance of it. Rebecca, I love how you have integrated all those tonalities to express the mood in this very serendipitous and appealing 'lyrical' piece.
Thank-you! Your words mean a lot! :)

A bit more. I asked my mother about the words, and she knew a third verse which she learned in Nova Scotia. There are the three verses: I love coffee, I love tea, I love the boys and the boys love me. Tell your mother to hold her tongue, She had a fellow when she was young. Tell your father to do the same, He is the one who changed her name.
I love it! This is fantastic! And can you confirm which tune she sang? The same as this video or a different one?
The same words my mother learned in Nova Scotia when she was young in the 1930s or 1940’s. She became a pianist and has played that to entertain her great grandchildren. Sweet!!
How delightful! This is only a theory of mine that this tune and these words matched up. Was this the tune your mother played to the words? I'm really curious.
@@RebekahMaxner She recited it rather than singing, but recited it after playing the same melody for her 1-1/2 year old grandson, who has discovered that he can hit piano keys and explore both low and high notes. She is two months short of her 98th birthday, and although her memory of current things is slipping, she can remember the words to an incredible number of old songs. Last summer she played a couple of variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for the kids, right out of her head. (Hands are pretty stiff, but the pleasure is still there). She grew up in Yarmouth, NS, now lives in Ontario.
Oops… great grandson.
@@peterbudgell7339 Interesting! What a treasure! You should take videos of her playing and singing and write down her lyrics. The interesting thing is that with your mother's extra verse, it doesn't exactly work with this melody anymore, but I still love it!
indubitably in 1950s pop star style
You got it!
it's the flea dance
Oh, really? Is that the name you know?
@@RebekahMaxner YEAH! It's not a waltz, but it's a POLKA! The Flea Polka, that is.
@@TKGIOIA I agree! It's definitely a polka and not a waltz, but for some reason traditionally some people have called it a waltz -- maybe as a joke!

You'd do a "jump bass" pattern, jumping the LH from the lower notes, up to the chords. You'd practice one move at a time (both directions) until you have the distances memorized.
