I may have not stated this clearly enough: The Steelcase Gesture is an amazing chair, the video is specifically about it being inferior only when compared to the Embody.
On its own however, it is one of the best chairs out there.

Thing to note for the people that like to sit really close to the desk in reclined position, like myself. Embody chair doesn't allow you to sit like that because the arm-rests get in the way. You can only lower them so they tuck in below the desk, but then you lose arm (elbow) support.
Also, having a headrest while sitting reclined (and Gesture has one of the bests headrests out there) makes a big difference in your overall comfort.
For the majority of people that have relatively upright normal sitting positions, these things I mentioned shouldn't matter much.

This is very informative. Thanks for reviewing. I went to try Steelcase, Herman Miller and Haworth a couple days ago.
    - HM: I like to sit crossed leg so Aeron is not a good option for me (I have one now). I like the back height of Cosm but the armrest is terrible for both leaf arm and adjustable arm. Embody is by far the best for Herman Miller but not for the armrest as I'm petite so I want it closer to my body. Thanks to mention about sitting crossed leg on Embody.
    - Steelcase: Leap 2 and Amia armrest are too far from my body. I like the Gesture the most without headrest. The headrest is kind of put my head forward.
    - Haworth: I went twice (last month and last week) because the first time they don't have headrest and lumbar support on Fern for me to try. And the second time, I want to try after I try sitting with Embody and Gesture. Zody is ok but not impressed compared to Fern. I just know this brand but I really enjoy Fern because the back height and armrest. Lumbar is not necessary as the back is very flexible with you back (not sure I use the correct word). Headrest is very simple, compared to Gesture but the good thing is headrest not put my head forward like Gesture. But it's not necessary as the back is quite high already (I'm 5' 7").
My concern is armrest and upper back that at least the same height with my shoulder. I still don't make a decision among Gesture, Embody, and Fern. Then, I found your review. Thanks again and please recommend if you have further thought.

Thanks for this, unfortunately I didn't try the other chairs you mentioned but if you're going to sit with your legs crossed, and you need arms to be close, then the Gesture is the way to go between the Leap, and the Embody. Also, Herman Miller makes a gaming version of the Embody that has a thicker foam pad. Try that one maybe.
You can find many reviews of it if you type. Logitech Herman Miller Embody. The thicker foam pad may make it possible to sit cross legged, but the arm problem still remains.

Nice review! You mention a few times that certain things on the Embody can cause a lot of pain, but no mentions of that for the Gesture. Yet you still choose the Embody as the winner. I really like both chairs personally and I'm struggling to decide. The Embody seems more complex with this Pixel Technology, but does it really make a difference? Will you get to test both chairs further and do another video somewhere down the line?

One of the regrets I have with this review is that I didn't state clearly enough how good the Gesture is as a chair, I was only saying it isn't as great when compared to the Herman Miller (just my opinion). That being said, the difference is significant for me because I'm a big guy and I really feel super supported with the Herman Miller. But for lighter individuals it may not be such a significant difference.

Anyways, you can use dry silicone lubricant on whatever squeeks on it. I got mine used for 400. I would buy it new if I could. It is worth every penny. I suggest you try it out. It's not going to be comfortable the first week. These ergonomic chairs literally fix your posture. I have steelcase, humanscale, herman miller, and an old HON chair... but the herman miller embody is my favorite. My only complain is that the top flares out kinda pushing your shoulder-it doesn't bother me so much normally but if I sleep wrong and my shoulder hurts I find myself throwing my elbows back on it. That's when I go sit in my steelcase leapv2.

Nevertheless, I would advice you to try it out before buying or you can order it from HM directly since they have a good return policy after the first 14 or 30 days, I think Im not sure. If you get it from a dealer like I did, you will get a better discount most probably but the return options might not be the same, at least not in my case; So I took a bit of gamble there but thankfully it paid off. I recently sold my herman miller aeron and hated the mesh on the chair. I hated the edge of the chair.. Its just not what I wanted. I'm looking for something comfortable to sit in for long hours. The only thing I liked about the aeron was the recline feature. I've been looking at the gesture and been thinking of going for it over the embody. Only because I had such a bad experience with the herman miller company with the aeron. But I'm still undecided after watching the video. Is that bad? I just want an amazing soft seat, amazing recline, seat that I can cross my legs in etc. My wife suggested just getting a recliner. Because I actually sit on my couch more than I sit on my aeron.

Back pain or the relief from it, is like a religious experience, so I don't blame you for being biased about the embody, but based on your review, the Gesture is a lot better. LOL. I love the steelcase 4d armrest, and I love the ability to cross my legs when I want to on my chair. Embody's armrest is the worst, not only is it not adjustable as Steelcase, it tilts with your backrest. I like to sit back and type or do stuff on my computer, and that armrest being leveled with the keyboard is instrumental in preventing carpul tunnel. So for me the gesture would win. I have the Leap, bought it used, and is amazed and obsessed with it also because it really cured my back. So I'm a bit biased with steelcases chair too. Anyhow, glad you found a great chair, they are all overly expensive, but well worth it.

I find the opposite is true. The gesture seat was very comfortable, while the embody put my legs to sleep. One thing to note, if you are 5'2" like me the Gesture headrest will push your neck forward, making you feel like you are looking down all the time.

This is why it's critical to get out there and try and find stores -- if they're open in your area and stock higher-end office furniture -- and try these for yourself. For me, not only was the opposite true, but I vehemently -- and I mean strongly -- dislike the embody. I find it to be a terrible seating experience. I tried both, and landed on the Steelcase Gesture with Headrest. I put together a completely custom build with the specs I wanted and it has been the best chair I've ever owned. And I've been through nearly all of the more well known brands.
Couple of notes, no offense to your mother, who I'm sure is an awesome lady, but I've owned the Gesture for a long time and the arms never move once they're in place. The issue you're talking about here is an edge case -- it's not a knock against the chair. Once you learn how they function, it's very easy to get consistent performance out of it. I get in my chair very similarly to your mom; all I did was adjust where my hands grasped the chair (over the sliding mechanism, force straight down) and I've never had them slide on me.

Unfortunately in my case I actually purchased most of the chairs I tested. Keeping in mind that I’m a developer and spend 16 hours a day at my desk so spending several thousand dollars to find a chair that works for me was a no brainer, considering how necessary it is to my career. This isn’t realistic for most people, so the suggestion might not be as helpful as it could be. One thing I have found, however, is that because of work from home orders many office stores are still operating because of the need for office furniture in the home. The reason the arms don't move smoothly is because you're doing it all wrong. I can't believe the number people who gripe about this so much without ever learning how to make the adjustment properly. You lift up on the armrests, while not pressing the height change buttons, and then move them in or out, as you like, with no resistance at all. So easy.

The thing which i was really surprised with all that 'chair industry' is that how headrests are surprisingly low-prioritized, i just don't get it.. Like really wtf lol. To start with, a full correct positioning of a human body absolutely includes the head-neck support. So as i am an adept of 'lock-into' 'right' sitting position, i would like to have all the places support possible. Not to say, paying over 2k+ $ for the chair with no headreast is just.. I mean, for the lack of a better word.. BULLSHIT!
Imagine for ex. paying premium for better seats in your new BMW, but it does not include the headrests (which are btw mandatory in automotive industry)
