John Franzese, nicknamed “Sonny,” was a legendary figure in the American Mafia. He was born at the beginning of the 20th century and died only at the start of the 21st, becoming the oldest mobster in history. He kept ties with all the iconic members of Cosa Nostra and became one of them himself.
Sonny was fully immersed in the life of a mobster and followed its rules without exception, which he proved on more than one occasion. He is rightly considered one of the most resilient criminals who never cooperated with the authorities. No matter how many years of imprisonment he was threatened with, Sonny always stayed true to his choice without hesitation. He would pay for it with prison terms, which eventually ran into several decades.
During his long life, this man managed to do many things. He had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, the top beauty symbol of the 20th century. He helped introduce Bob Marley to the world, and he also sponsored the highest-grossing porno ever made in the genre.
Today's story is not just a retelling of a gangster's life. We’re taking a retrospective look at a major part of the history behind the American Mafia through the lens of one man. He saw how the older guys rose from bootlegging alcohol, then participated in the transformation of Cosa Nostra into the dominant crime organization of the States in the 20th century, and finally watched the decline of his organization, which by now, has either gone deep underground, or disappeared altogether.
So if you're interested in hearing the story of the man who probably most embodies the title of “mobster,” then meet John Sonny Franzese, on the other side of the law.

This was one of the more informative short documentaries on the Franzese family. I wouldn't say it is the best, but I would rank it in the top 3. Personally, I think it leaves out a handful of important factors in the story that gives insight into the how & why part of what happened. One example is his son Michael Franzese actually tricked the FEDs into thinking he was going to co-operate with them. He never went into Wit-Sec and just walked away from the life. After many many years the FBI realized the game Michael was playing and having no intentions of ever testifying against anyone. This is when they threw Michael in the slammer putting him on diesel therapy (the FEDs form of cruel & unusual punishment without breaking any laws) where they throw you in solitary confinement transferring you around the country to different prisons never staying at one for longer than like 3-4 weeks. Because of the state of limbo your status is in you cannot use the telephone or have access to commissary nor can your family get into touch with you. I forget how long they did this to him, but I know it was over a year. I suppose after they got some pay back plus knowing he wasn't going to break they put him into population. After he did that stretch and out on parole this was when the FEDs came to him to testify against Norby Walters who Michaels father was extremely pissed at around then wanting him taken out Michael was afraid the FBI might again throw him back in prison for parole violation so Michael told them ok I will testify in the Norby Walters case, but I will only tell the truth of what I know to which the FBI agreed. In that trial they ended up only asking Michael a handful of questions that most all of them were concerning Norby's recent activities that Michael knew nothing about since he had not worked together in the last 15-20 years. There was only one question that he could answer yes to which was about an old case that had been settled. Point being Michael already knew what the FEDs were after hence why he agreed and second, he gave nothing up incriminating. So YES, he testified NO he never said anything that ever put anyone in jail. He walked away from the life, but he did it on his own terms not having any interest in putting anyone in jail. THIS IS THE very reason why the FEDs have an issue with him AND why other Mobsters sort of have this jealousy attitude about him because he walked away but didn't have to do what all the others were forced to do and hence get the jacket put on them of a RAT. It's a touchy subject with many of them. I digress, I didn't mean to go into a rant saying too much on that. Lastly, the only other thing I will say keeping it short is at the end it says both Michael & John didn't attend the funeral and the truth is that John was not allowed to witness protection wouldn't authorize it and Michael not ever being in the program was still contacted by the FEDs who advised him it wouldn't be wise for him to either, but Michael called and had it arranged for him to go there to do a private viewing & visit after the funeral ceremony was over. I don't agree with what John did when he wore that wire and gave the FBI information causing his father to go back to prison, but I will say that there is a documentary on here that interviews John allowing him to tell his side of the story and what happened. Basically, he never meant for that to happen to his father and that he was doing it for 2 reasons 1 to get himself some help for drugs and a way to leave that life for good. He claims he made a deal that they wouldn't go after his father, but in the end someone had to go down its a long story and worth watching it is sad to be honest. It shows how stand-up Sonny Franzese was as a father when he went into court with his son about to take the stand against him and Sonny reassured him letting him know he was proud of him & not mad at him for anything. I honestly can say I do not know hardly anyone today that wouldn't play the victim card in this situation poor me look how my own son is testifying against me. Instead Sonny rooted him on giving John the strength he needed to be able to do it and get what it was he needed from them. I cannot believe Hollywood has not yet made a movie about the Franzese Mob story it would be the best one ever covering all aspects of life in general and the roller coaster of the fast life while beating all the odds living to be well over 100 years old is insane.

Technically Sonny did have a big part in Bob Marleys early career & being recognised. No one would fund it, the race divide obviously played a part but Sonny (so I’ve heard don’t quote me) liked his music & didn’t care about colour. Some kid said something to him about liking “black music” he had someone break a couple of bones for the insult. & the man smashed Marilyn Munro’s back door in too. Legend.

"Franzese was born May 27, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York to John "Sonny" Franzese, a Colombo crime family underboss, and Cristina Capobianco-Franzese, although Michael had initially questioned who his actual biological father was.[4] Franzese had initially believed that he had been adopted by John after his mother divorced Frank Grillo, whom Franzese thought to be his biological father.[5] Michael says he had gone by the name "Michael Grillo" until he was 18 years old.[6] However, it was later discovered that John, already married with three children, had gotten the 16-year-old Capobianco, a cigarette girl at the Stork Club in Manhattan, pregnant with Michael, so Capobianco married Grillo to avoid having a scandal surrounding having a child out of wedlock. After the mob allowed John to divorce his first wife, Grillo disappeared, and John married Capobianco.[5]"

I think all people should say what they mean and mean what they say. Unless they are kidding or some shit. Also, if you're gonna do crime do your time and hold that code. If you're gonna be a good person out here then do that. But don't take down other people if you're doing bad stuff. Plus people will find out in there and that's all bad for you. And if you have to do something bad if you're good just do what you got to do but don't bring other people down. Trust me they don't give a shit if you end up in there and those in there definitely don't go for that shit. What's in your past will bite you in the ass for real. Solid people are hard to find now and it's a different class of honor. Both good and bad if you hold your integrity you will be respected
