Lazar's Curse - Epic Slavic Music of Serbia
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 02. 2024
- Music & vocals by Farya Faraji. This is a composition based the Kosovo Curse, or Prince's Curse, attributed in legend to Lazar Hrebeljanović, a medieval Serbian ruler who went to war against the Ottomans in the now legendary Battle of Kosovo in 1389. In the legend, Lazar curses all those of Serbian blood who do not come to the Battle of Kosovo to a curse that will affect their lineage hence. The current version of the curse is from a 1845 collection of Serbian folk songs collected by Vuk Karadžić, a Serbian anthropologist and philologist.
The music is written in a typical Serbian form which is itself characterised by the broader characteristics of Balkan music: an odd time signature in seven time, drone harmony that emphasises seconds, something very harsh and dissonant in Western European music theory but enjoyed in Serbia, and a 17th to 19th century instrumentation based on the usage of saz instruments, the kaval, a Balkan bagpipe and frame drums. The instrument that begins and closes the song is the gusle, a bowed instrument which is central to the recitation of Serbian epic poetry.
Lyrics in Serbian:
Ко је Србин и српскога рода,
и од српске крви и колена
а не дош'о на бој на Косово
Од руке му ништа не родило
English translation:
Whoever is a Serb and of Serb birth,
And of Serb blood and heritage,
And comes not to fight at Kosovo,
May nothing grow that his hand sows! - Hudba

This song is sick! As Serbian I love it❤.
P.S. Day 4 of asking for song about Scipio Africanus so I can add it to my Roman Empire playlist.
If there is anyone capable of making epic song about emperor (tsar) Dušan it's you Farya. Great job as always and greetings from Serbia!
Hello to you, can you make the same music with the same deep voice, the same rhythm, the same instruments in Latin but Islamic version? this is palastinalied music made in latin by the scaldic bard

Great work as always Farya, I only think that you should've add the full text of the curse, as it better show's the seriousness of the threat.
...May he never have progeny born from love,
Neither son nor daughter!
May nothing grow that his hand sows,
Neither red wine nor white wheat!
And may his progeny be feeble until any left!
Svaka čast, muzika,pevanje...kao da si se rodio u to vreme 👏👏👏👍

Beautiful! I love the Serbian language. I wonder if gaida is still played in traditional Serbian dances. Btw the main melody, that starts from 0:49 is very similar to ''Κουκουνούδα'', a Greek song from Thrace. Many musical motifs are shared by nearly all Balkan people. Awesome work once again Farya!
It is common to play in south Serbia, but also on the north (Banat region) during the ceremonies like weddings, baptisms or sending to army.🙂
@@rastkonosovic6817 I see, hvala puno!
Ancient Thracians used to also live in South Eastern Serbia. Maybe the Serbs took some of that culture when they settled in the Balkans. :)
@@Anonymous07192Half of South Slavs have proto European ancestry. So, probably they share a lot of ancestry with all people's of Balkans.
@@gideonros2705 it's likely, yes. A massive amount of Slavs settled in the balkans, but that doesn't mean the natives just disappeared all of a sudden. They probably just became a minority and got assimilated by the larger group over time, especially in regards to language.

As always, great job Farya. Greetings from Serbia! 🇷🇸🤝❤
Pure epicness. I never tought Tsar Lazar's curse could sound so magical & melodic. Superb!
Saint Prince Lazar is also considered a Tsar in Serbia. Thank you for this one. 🇷🇸❤
He isnt considered a tsar he is considered a knyaz , the church considers him a tsar in divine meaning as he chose "The tsardom of the heavens" instead of "Knyazate and wealth on the ground" although that is church teachings , they arent correct as we know from written documents the fight didnt go the way the church told us .
A group of Serbian knights broke through the ottoman defenses directly pinning Sultan down , there was no "betrayal" and Sultan didnt get his belly cut open up to his throat by a deceitful knight . He got killed while fighting and wasnt sitting under a tarp.
Knyaz Lazar got killed by turks which came back to pick up the bodies and wandered off far enough where they spotted him as he was praying in a nearby church after battle , according to byzantine writings .
@@StodOneR That's what i meant. The divine meaning. The historical details specifically in the youtube comments don't interest me, nor do i like to get into discussions, i'll do the researches on my own. Thanks for pointing out the divine meaning though.
@@StodOneR Finally to find such a comment where person literally claims all I do. I don't know if it's true tho, I hope it is, but still I hope he chose Tsardom of Heaven.
He is a Tzar. Take a look at "Ohridski Prolog" by Saint bishop Nikolaj Velimirović. Specifically the day of Saint Tzar Lazar.
@@djordjemitic3325 His title was Knez, That is Prince in English, Duke or whatever. Prinicipality. He wasn't tsar actually. Probably people considered him one cause Serbia was teared apart and split into dynasties specific territories. And he was the uniter. Idk.

I swear, every time you release a song is like a little Christmas for me.
This is the coolest percussion rhythm I’ve ever heard for a 7/8 time signature! Wonderful piece!
Farya if you ever wanna try to make another Serbian song, I know a singer called Milan Mica Petrovic. He signs about our old commitas that were fighting against turks in Macedonia (we call it old Serbia).
His style, songs, and sound is something you wanna hear. Very specific ( im also talking as a musician ). Some songs I would recommend is Jovan Babunski, Micko kumita, and TRZE RADIC JATAGAN. Best regards from the USA

I have met many, many Iranians and I have many good iranian friends. And I can tell you: there is a secret connection between these two nations and cultures. I cannot explain how and what, but, being among iranians was for me not any different as being among my fellow Serbs. And, if you not take into account Greeks, you are the only culture that I feel that close. And trust me, I have met many, many people in my life. The way you speak, think about life, behave and treat each other, values you have, things that you strive to is essentially the same. Gut feeling tells me there is some secret connection, some days we will discover it. many thanks for this, you did it great and many greetings from one of your new Serbian friends.
Thank you, Farya, for this gem 🩷 Thank you for your amazing talent, erudition, curiosity and sensitivity with which you present Serbian and Balkan heritage!🙏
This song reminds me of my late father who was a Serb from the mountanous region of eastern Bosnia. He knew many Serbian folk songs by heart and would often recite or sing them pretending he was singing along the gusle. When my sister and I were kids, he would sometimes sing in a car while driving, and we kids would go, "Oh, dad, please not again!"
Now I would give everything to hear him sing again those beautiful epic songs...
He probably fled the war, or after the war was over.Do you speak Serbian?
@Milan_M95 No, it was much earlier than that.
This is so beautiful, thank you for making music from my country in such a faithful manner and for doing so much research, it means a lot 🥺🤲💕 this song is such an earworm
I adore your video essays and I learned a lot from you, now whenever my family claims that our music was "corrupted" by the ottoman empire I can uno reverse card them and use your big brain knowledge on the matter to disprove them 😤👊
This one really touches me, I miss my home. Thank you for this

You knocked it out of park my dear friend. Please make more Serbian music you speak it wonderfully (more Byzantine music also wouldn't hurt). Thanks for this masterpiece🇷🇸
Battle of Kosovo is so sacred to us.We lost our kingdom, we lost out King Lazarus there...We endured Ottoman rule thanks to that battle.
Thank you my Iranian brother!!
We perserved our culture through the Orthodox Church, those soldiers fought for the heavenly kingdom they all knew they will die in the end but went ahead anyway which to this day the church has perserved our culture through muslim occupation western bombing secular communism and yet we held onto our culture through the church the battle of kosovo is more important then people in the west thinking its some 20 century conflict.
There we became a heavenly people - nebeski narod !
How did you endure ?

It's impressive how clean your pronounciations are, thank you for this beautiful piece of work! Greetings from Belgrade!
Local friends of mine are in Balkan dance troupes and one reason is that it's phalanx training and police horses won't charge into it. Although they decommissioned the police horses when they discovered they don't mix with tear gas the guys still keep the dancing up.
Idemo Farya!!! Serbia - Persia !!!
И ово си супер одрадио, добродошао у Србију.
Interesting thing about Lazar is that he had a dream in which God let him choose which kingdom he wishes, heavenly or earthly.
Soon after battle of Kosovo came, and he managed to summon respectable number of Serbians under his banner, and finally gave his life for his fatherland he was pronounced Tzar Lazar, post mortum.Because of the fact that he chose to ride out no matter the aftermath,he knew that Serbia is the last bastion of defence for Europe.
Western schools nowdays because of politics influenced even Serbia itself,so it wouldn't be a surprise to hear from Serb that he thinks we lost that battle.
As a matter of fact, never before or after has Ottoman empire lost their Sultan in a battle, but they did on that day,and yes we lost bigger portion of army, but Serbian state didn't seize to exist for another century, untill the last Serbian city fell under Ottoman empire.
We have faught bravely for almost five centuries against Turks, even after they conquered all of our lands, while rest of Europe was plundering and stealing around the world.
Sometimes i wish things went diffrent, and that we made some kind of alliance with Ottomans and helped them pillage through western Europe.
Love it, altough i would have recomnended you to make a song about a Serbian Epic Poem by the name of The death of mother Jugovića. Its a poem that deals with grief, pain and loss of loved ones. In serbian Smrt majke Jugovića
Ја не одлучујем да ли ћу ићи у битку по томе каква је сила која ме прати, него по томе колику СВЕТИЊУ браним !

Great work on incorporating some of the most famous Serbian epic verses into a great song! I’ve been of the opinion for a long time now that the gusle tradition needs an upgrade, as it has potential, and I’m glad you decided to incorporate them. Now all we need is a video of you singing the song in Gazimestan (the site of the battle) or Kruševac (Lazar’s capital).
