- It's been so long since we've done anything from the Ride The Lightning album. I have waited so long to listen to this but I just couldn't wait any longer. A lot of people have started to complain about there apparently being too many Metallica videos... Personally, I don't think there ever can be too many!
Here is my reaction to hearing Metallica - The Call Of Ktulu for the first time. I hope you enjoy it!

This one will chew you up and spit you out!!!! Stank faces incoming!!!!!!!
And it did, I have a MetallicA tattoo. And you need some Mushroomhead in your playlist bro , you're missing out on a band that was in the big three and started a genre! Solitaire unraveling, the heresy, we are the Truth, Sun doesn't Rise. Pick one. Try something new , hop in this here rabbit hole MollyBoy. And say Hi to the goosebumps and hair standing up with every song, it's not like anything you know, love the vids brother, and I like your style in cars. Keeping the faith you'll follow that crazy rabbit
We laugh you scream and shout
You gotta check out the live version of this song in S&M, they play it with a full orchestra
Yes masterpiece in s&m.
It's the first track on S&M. This is the Metallica song that Michael Kamen was most excited to create an orchestral arrangement for.
Ikr! Who would have thought that one of my favorite instrumentals would be about an ancient, mythical, psychic sea monster.
Most of the backing sounds are Cliff Burton doing all kinds of awesome bass riffage! All 4 of them created this eerie heavy gem. I forgot to mention Dave Mustain also wrote some of this before he was kicked out of Metallica and Kirk hammet did NOT write any of it.
All FIVE; Mustaine wrote half the riffs.
@@aldersmoke1half? More like 1 or 2. Mustaine stans are crazy for real
CLIFF!! R.I.P.
@@user-qp9me2nl5t the two riffs he wrote on this song are the riffs that are played over and over and that's pretty much half (if not more) of the song
Yeah Cliff shines in this one
No vocals brother. Just instrumental perfection. You can FEEL Ktulu rising from the sea....
If you can read the story fast enough, the music kinda matches the various reveals in the story, and the Johannson section of it.
He wakes as the world dies screaming....
Always made me think more of "At the Mountains of Madness" more when listening though.
I can feel the cthulhu inside me...🤤
I'm still waiting on decent movie adaptations of both
More metallica you can't have enough don't listen to the haters
It's mostly Megadave fans, they want to be relevant so bad 🤣
Well said we love metalica
@@gunsgoodtime😂true
Mega Dave 😂😂😂😂
@@mztweety1374 I know I thout so too 🤣🤣
One of the finest moments in Metal history
This song is SEVERELY fucking underrated! I appreciate this reaction.
Is it, though?
I almost never see videos about this song, or people commenting on it.@@omgbeardriving
@@isolatedmortalityband5718 everyone I've talked to about the band loves it and I've seen it talked about a lot over the years online so 🤷♂
to be honest in my opinion the main riff is a bit too repetitive. it sounds great the first few times but after a while it gets annoying because of the lack of switch ups. more variety would have done this song justice.
Every metal songs sucks then-By your logic.@@astronova3508
Cliff going nuts in the background the entire way really ties it together. Great reaction.
“In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming..."
Love Lovecraft!!
That guitar solo that u were talking about was actually the bass,Cliff Burton.
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
Thanks to Metallica I'm now obsessed with Lovecraft... and Antarctica.
I'm still amazed everytime i watch this fan made video, how well Metallica's work integrates to the original HP Lovecarft story...
czcams.com/video/lDstqHkWF6Y/video.htmlsi=dOiDsgV48_oWcTkw
That bass roar is EVERYTHING! My metalhead friends and I have had loads of fun over the years with this one. It's mostly not particularly difficult to play, and because of how it cycles, you can jam out to this for however long you want. A fantastic piece of metal history.
This was originally called "When Hell Freezes Over". Later the name of the song was changed at the initiative of the band's new bassist, Cliff Burton, and a guitar chord structure was added, written by Kirk Hammett, who was a big Lovecraft fan. The misspelling of "Cthulhu" is explained by the fact that, according to Lovecraft's works, mentioning Cthulhu's name (verbally or in writing) could summon him, so the band changed the name "in fear of the monster". (Copied from a fan)
Dont forget Dave Mustain also has Credit with this song, he wrote that one Riff. Also used in Hanger 18.
@@EkcotheBeholder And it sounds way better in this track, imo
Cliff shines on this one. The Wah effect on his bass is magical.
Imagine these guys writing this otherworldly instrumental song being 21-22 years old when the album was released….it’s insane how good they are at that age…..geniuses in the third degree 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
And only 12 months after Kill 'em All! A quantum leap in music.
100%!
Cliff would step in his Wah pedal, back hand his strings with his knuckles and look everyone in the eye smiling while he did it, lol.
RiiiiiiiP 🤘🏼
Thanks for that one Molly. As someone who was self taught on guitar from metallica, you can appreciate the brilliance of what each riffs and tempo change means and feels like. Can't wait for more Metallica, remember there are a lot 🤟
THIS ONE IS UPLOADING 1 HOUR EARLIER THAN USUAL SO MAKE SURE TO CLICK 'NOTIFY ME' SO YOU DON'T MISS IT!
So satisfying watching youth love my Metal bands! Thanks Mollyboy 😁 made my day brighter. ❤️
As much as I love the original version, S&M is just something else. If you don't know yet, it's Metallica with the full San Francisco Symphony orchestra playing live. I loved the first one so much, I actually travelled to the US from London to see them do S&M 2.
The S&M version is epic and pretty. This one is mean and terrifying, mainly due to Cliff's unhinged performance; no version without him can ever top this.
LIVE MUST WATCH The Thing That Should Not Be, Seattle 1989
My personal favourite Metallica song. That Bass growl. Love watching your videos dude
It's just a mass of solo brilliance.. and I can't wait,.. going to warm up with a bit of Orion.
Good call, Sigma!
I'm on SOAD right now on my morning playlist...Lonely day. I f..kn love this song.
@@Metal_Mary nice, I just put on Wanted Dead or Alive, saw Bon Jovi at Darien Lake with my high school sweetheart, was never really a fan till I saw them live.
You can almost see Cthulu coming from the oceans with this song, now you know why i pushed this song so hard. Cliff Burton and his bass solos in it are SICK!
Hey, I'm an old school Metallica fan from back in the day. I love how you say how awesome of a guitar player Kirk Hammett is.. having said that, you should check out an old metal/thrash band called Exodus. Kirk was in this band before Metallica. I feel like it's some of the hardest metal thrash ever created. I love your reactions, they're genuine and funny. Cheers Bro! Enjoy!!
Yeah Exodus only got heavy and turned into a thrash band after Metallica moved to the Bay Area. They all followed them 🤘
Dave leaving his mark on Metallica. Always loved this song 😁
All those noises in the background are Cliffs bass. Fucking incredible!
this song is inspired by the short story “The Call of Cthulhu ” by American author H.P. Lovecraft. Cthulu is a water based beast or cosmetic entity but if you keep on repeating its name you wake and provoke it and it will rise and attack your city till it finds you the caller and kills you hence Metallica changed the name in the tittle of the song to Ktulu so the beast is not awaken. Listening to this masterpiece really you can feel the journey from waking up the beast as the music slowly builds up with suspence till when the beast reaches the city’s shores and the music starts to intensify as Cthulhu destroys the city and the music is just telling you how and discribing how magnificently raged the beast is. And when it destroys its target, the one who called its name and provoked it and woke it, then the beast calms retreats back to the water as it immerses its body into the horizon of the ocean the music calms and once the Cthulu fully disappers the waters go back to how it was before Cthulu woke and so does the music
And I'll go ahead and tell you right now, I've been listening to this since it was brand new, and the greatest thing about it is, you will NEVER get tired of listening to it, EVER! How many years have I been listening now? 40 years+? And I STILL listen to it regularly. It's just that fucking good. It really is.
Oh this is the very song that hooked me into the metal scene. Late summer 1984, playing soccer in the park down the road from my house in Dublin and a group of metal heads (later became my close friends) blasting this from a Sanyo suitcase ghetto blaster. I froze to the ground on hearing it...... Everything changed for me that day. Pure time wharp. Good days. F*€king 40 years ago!!!!!!!!!!
There is one more instrumental they got. Suicide and redemption. It is pretty good.
"That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons, even death may die." 🤘
Where is this qoute from brother?
@@Ranganation it is from H.P Lovecraft - The Nameless City.
The creator of Cthulu.
Cliff Burtons bass playing is sick, hes roars with the wah pedal and distorted bass
Yea all those little mini solos you hear in the background and all that weird growling stuff, is all cliff burton on bass. The way the record was mixed, a lot of the amazing little things he’s doing throughout the whole track are really hard to hear because the guitars are so much more out in front but that’s all cliff. There’s a remastered version of the song where you can hear him better on all those little solos. He does some really wild stuff that I hadn’t noticed before. This song was definitely one of his babies. 🤘🏻
Eerie and foreboding. But hauntingly beautiful. Masterpiece.
"Tiny little guitar solo on the background". Nah, it's just Cliff doing his crazy things on bass :) Nicely represting the beast in the background. And well spotted those sounds btw, many people miss them totally on first listening. Nice reaction video again, thanks!
You can never do "too much" Metallica, you are only starting off with them I'd say. Can't wait till you get to the Load era of Metallica. They're coming to Europe in spring/summer, go see them live!
Everything after the black album is "too much".... Sadly.
@@MickeyStartraveller Too much to you personally maybe as you have a certain taste. But I and millions of others appreciate them as artists overall, who explore different terrain and manage to create something new all the time. I'm in for the ride alongside them.
Ooooh, this is the one I've been waiting for!!!!
CALL OF KTULU AND ORION ARE CLASSICS... THEY JUST PLAYED THOSE TWO LIVE ON THE TOUR I JUST SAW LAST SUMMER.... EPIC!!
Fun fact…. Metallica NEVER sold out.
Just like Jason newsted said yeah they sold out they sell out arenas....🤘😆
Keep telling yourself that.
@@egilskallagrimsson2941 you mean them cutting their hair and wearing makeup wasn't selling out??🤭🤣🤣🤣
Did they sell out, or did their metal spirit die on a bridge in Denmark in 1986?
@@egilskallagrimsson2941Keep on hating hater
Goosebumps are coming...
All of their instrumentals are masterpieces. I love the Hanger 18 Riff from Dave
It was the Call of Ktulu riff that Dave reclaimed for Hangar 18.
He's used them all at various points
Killer Combo today Molly!!!🤘😁
One of the best instrumentals of all time!!!
Crazy thing to think about, but you have impacted 32.5k people.....that's one helluvan accomplishment! Congratulations, and keep up the great work, love watching your videos!
Thank you so much!
3:34 that is actually Cliff Burton on bass that you are hearing there
My favorite small detail about the first 3 albums is the bass that Cliff would throw in during the songs. You always know he had a great part of each song.
Don’t apologize for your journey, bro. It’s yours and we’re just along for the ride. Watching your reactions brings me back to the 80’s when I was starting my journey. Keep it up!
Ohhh good pick. I like this song a lot.
Cliff’s bass growls in this one are so awesome 🐙
man i havent heard this song for like 25 years............fucking amazing song that i forgot about, so glad you reacted to it bro
I think you should at some point listen to the entire first S&M concert. It's brilliant
have never listened to this with earbuds before...my man Cliff is utterly wrecking this track!!!! RIP 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
StankFace in full effect by the 3 minute mark. Oh my God this is so awesome!!!
In college... of course i took, "music appreciation" and did a report on THIS song. I actually cited like 5 different classical songs that have the same note progressions as in various parts of this song. I did the same thing with Yngwie's Icarus Dream Suite, but that had much longer progressions of identical notes, where clearly he knew the classical songs he was inspired by.
One of my favorites of all time. Just crushes you when it's cranked.
This from the S&M album with the San Francisco symphony orchestra is epic. ❤
This song is amazing live. Looking forward to hear your opinion 😊
This song is amazing. Saw it live in 1985 & live in 2023. Both times amazing
Kirk is such an amazing guitarist and sooooooooooo underappreciated....this album and "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice For All" helped me get through high school in the late 80's...(I graduated in 1990)
Suicide and Redemption is an instrumental from their 2008 album. It must be done its so gooooood🔥
Missed the live chat for this one today. Here now🤘
Hope you’re all good!
The late Mr Cliff Burton, on the bass is ,what your hearing in the background , absolute legend.
I LOVE Cliff’s bass sound on this. How he uses the wah wah and distortion on this is just killer. The whole sound is a monster.
You said that you are wanting to share this music with your friends and introduce them to the awesome stuff... That is why we are all here my boy! We get to see you reacting to the things that most of us have loved since before you were born... Seeing a young man like yourself blown away by our favorites does our heart good and reminds us what it was like to hear these fir the first time when we were young, and for some of us that was LONG AGO😂
I think I've watxhed this about 5 times. I can't get over the reaction dude. That's literally the same reaction i had. It's by far the most beautiful Metallica song.
This is my number 1 favourite Metallica song, seeing them perform it in its entirety live in Melbourne was completely unexpected and one of the highlights of my life.
Killer video, man. 🤘
The live version of this that they performed with the San Francisco Symphony on S&M 1 is just perfect
one of my favorites from Metallica. the feeling that there's a summoning going on, that there is something responding, is just perfect. after so many years, i still get chickenskin when the summoning is complete and ktulu is here at 00:11:15 ...such great vivid composing.
I'm a Metallica fan since 1984 .. and love your comments about them ...keep on going !! Welcome to the Metallica Family !!!
Any Metallica instrumental will inspire any new guitar players. Powerful stuff. 🤘
You are hearing new Metallica on CZcams. When we were growing up as kids, we would go to a lucky mates place who had just acquired it on cassette, normally bought by their parents, or bought with hard earned pocket money. We would also borrow each other’s cassette, hoping our players would not chew the tape. Pull the pencil out when needed, to respool it.
Awesome days, very fond memories. Mates in metal 🤘
The fact you are young and not from the era of Metallica greatness, the fact that it moves is exactly why music is life. I’m 53 and could take you back to the moment I put the needle down on RTL. Hope you enjoy the lifetime of memories. From an old metal head 🤘🏻 ps, go see them before it’s too late! For real. 😳
This song changed my life mollyboy! U ♥️ that shiat!!! 😎
Funnily enough I was listening to it scrolling my youtube feed and then I see your video! Keep up with the Metallica Vids they are great!
U should react live version with orchestra SNM year 1999. Brilliant and awesome.
Just FYI, Ktullu is a monster from H. P. Lovecraft novels that was so powerful it could kill you simply by you looking at it. Kirk Hamet was a huge horror novel fan. This is the last song that Dave Mustaine had any input on.
I've seen some people suggest listening to the s&m version. But if you do, listen to the s&m2 version. The background bass is much more audible in the second one.
The intro and the two clean riffs are some of my favourite things to play on an acoustic guitar. So much fun (and a good warm up for the fingers)
I loved your reaction when you thought the song had finished! These guys don't stop until the end, and then give some more. So glad you enjoyed it mate, you have so much more to look forward to, love the videos, keep them coming.
The part you’re referencing in the beginning of the song and continues throughout the song is the late GREAT CLIFF BURTON on bass adding texture to the entire arrangement. R.I.P. Cliff
The end of this song always brings out the kid in me… that ending is enough to make me cry happy tears 😂
The 2 sequel songs to this one are 'The thing that should not be' (from MoP 1986) and 'Dream no more' (from ...Hardwired to self destruct 2016.)
The BEST way to listen to this song is full blast and eyes closed to feel it!
This song has pulled me out of any funk I've ever been in. And is also my favorite instrumental song of all time!!
That solo in the back that you heard 3:29 was cliff (bass)
Im loving every one of your Metallica reaction videos. Im here for all of it! Welcome to the world I stepped into as a 13 year old back in 1992.
I have always liked the instrumentals that Metallica made . The harmonizing guitars sound like a symphony to me 🤘🤘
The S&M version with the orchestra is something else man. You’ll love it
"The Call Of Ktulu" is the one instrumental song I love a lot. Adventurous, fast, cryptid in a way and yeah.
Dave mustaine reused that chord sequence in hanger 18 (megadeth) a few years later.
The "tiny, little guitar solo" is Cliff Burton with his distorted bass, playing his Wah Wah Pedal 😁
He did this many times on the first two albums
🤘 Thanks again for a great reaction Mollyboy brother 🤘
That in the "background" was Cliff's bass. \m/
This is definitely the best instrumental they have done. James, Kirk and Cliff playing some major riffage and Lars pounding those drums. A perfect formula.
Late to the party but Im happynto be a witness. Love yah Molly bro
Yes! That jammed! Haven’t heard it before but have also fallen for Metallica thanks to your reactions! I really only knew the radio hits. Wow… the instrumental tracks are some of the best. I felt that ending in my soul🤘🏻❤
The apotheosis of minor key, most dark Metallica composition and one of the most dark intros in metal music ever. Fun fact 1: Dave Mustaine was inspired by Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”. Exact same chords, played differently. Fun fact 2: Mustaine used again the exact same chords a few years later on Megadeth’s Hangar 18. Cheers
Cliff is definitely the architect here. Dude was so amazing. I always think what they would have sounded like if he didn't die. He was at the peak.
Thais song means a Lot to me. One of my favorites songs from Metallica. I become a fan after a listen to that song a long ago.
Rgds from Brazil bro.
It's your channel, do what ever you want. More Metallica pleeeaase!! 🤘🏼🎶
Hi Molly,
Because of this, Ride the Lightning is Metallica's best album of their entire career.
Still waiting for Trapped Under Ice 🙌❤️
I remember the I bought this album when it came out and I popped some acid and man cliffs bass kept tripping me out so I listened to this song over and over all night
