Social media particularly Twitter is really stirring things up, Elon Musk suggesting there will be a civil war.... I grew up in Slough, we had two Sikh Temples, a Polish Club, an Irish club, an Anguilan Church, a mosque, there was little trouble even in the early 80s when Toxteth, Brixton and other areas experienced riots... What the EDL did in Southport was sickening to read about.

Twitter is stirring things up because its showing things the main stream media will not.

On one hand, I agree with the 'social media' aspect...but I also think we tend to use that as an excuse for what really is very bad, destructive behaviors...and I feel putting any onus on sharing the blame gives the bad people an out
It's like drumpf saying there's good people on both sides: really ? There's good nazis ?!? Good klansmen ??!??
Nah: people absolutely choose to follow stupidity and do bad and no amount of social media does anything but bolster their evilness and give them cover amongst friends

Thank you for putting this out Olly. It's really been getting me down seeing the events unfold. I'm the son of two immigrants and I'm glad my parents are no longer around to see what this country is becoming especially since 2016. And even more than these fascist thugs their ringmasters like Farage and Reform, the Daily Mail, Robinson, and GB News need to be taken to task for their years of spewing bile and hatred. I'm totally saddened and sickened.

    • @crawdad19141

Did your parents immigrate legally, respecting the laws of the UK, assimilating into the culture working hard to produce for the country that took them in with open arms?
      I'm guessing they did.
Respecting ones laws valuing ones culture and wanting proper resources available for legal citizens is not fascist, neither is patriotism fascism. Your parents would understand this, assuming their first act upon entering the country was not breaking its laws and refusing to assimilate.
What's happening in the UK and the US, is everyday citizens being pushed aside in favor of Immigrants being mass imported into a sovereign country. Expect good and law abiding people to act out when politicians ignore them.
Yeah the riots are ugly, but so is the plight of the forgotten man and woman in the UK and the US.

If this people’s were checked it wouldn’t be a problem… If people had a right to discuss things it wouldn’t be a problem… Even my Jamaican and Sikh friends from the lodge are annoyed; but violence shouldn’t be the answer.
When you have a country that has only 2 real parties then this happens. Migrants will vote for Labour if they let them in and the conservatives by flooding the nation with people can cause wage competition and lower wages.
Immigrants aren’t a problem, unchecked immigrants are. I’m glad it’s coming to light after being a part of several dodgy actions myself in the south west.
Cannot wait to leave this country so that I can contribute to a decent society with real moral values.

I haven't seen any evidence of this at all. Policing is always (quite rightly) situational. If you look at the recent disorder there have been a relatively small number of protestors but a high amount of violence/crime, so the police have come down hard. Compare that to the pro-Palestenian marches (which many on the right.decried) where you had vastly more protestors but hardly any trouble at all.

I was born in South Africa post-Apartheid. Racism was still everywhere. IS still everywhere. I experienced it firsthand. I know how dehumanising it can be and how racists can justify it to themselves.
This is why I write the Duke Gibbs series. He's a black man who stands up to discrimination wherever he finds it, and I wish he was real. It lets me shed light on some of the horrible things that have been done to people that are different over the years, and hopefully, my readers learn something while enjoying the fantasy of the bad people getting theirs. I try to infuse my fiction with strong anti-discrimination stances, which has led to reviews calling me a "raging leftist" and my Duke Gibbs series being labelled an "Agenda" for the fact that it is 100% AGAINST discrimination in every single way. As an artist, I know my books will never change the world, but I try to have a message and a purpose in all my work. Even if it is just pulp fiction.
I deplore discrimination of ANY KIND and think these people in the UK who are rioting are deserving of nothing less than jail time. It is appalling behaviour, and for it to come from the UK, which has been a multicultural society for hundreds of years (even Victorians were sympathetic to the plight of enslaved people in the US), is truly heartbreaking. In South Africa, people still get dirty looks or are discriminated against for being in a mixed-race relationship. South Africans have moved to the UK to get away from that. To see what is happening now is just awful.
So I want to thank you, Olly, for reaffirming my faith in you as a creator and for just being a decent human being. Keep safe, please.

If we pretend that this is not racist and not fascist, will that make things better? Or will it only help them to spread the hatred they are preaching? This is not 100% racism and not 100% fascism, but the distinction is so insignificant that mentioning it makes the racists and the fascists seem more tolerable. Whether they appreciate the irony is not important.

@@TheTheMrplas The origin of the problem is hatred. Preaching more hatred is not going to get rid of hatred. Until the right care more about their children than about hurting people who are different, things will keep getting worse, because of these rioters and those who think the way they think. This is ABSOLUTELY NOT self-defense.

They are not far right riots, they are patriotic riots. I agree that any kind of violence should be condemned, as should apathy and betrayal of a country be condemned. A country deserves to have borders and laws, and if the government won't enforce the laws, its citizens should.
It's not people who should be afraid of their governments, it's governments that should be afraid of their people.

Perfectly stated. The "far right" label is simply a catch all and conversation stopper for those refusing to look into the causes affecting the disenfranchised citizen. Its simply lazy intellectually, and a result of corporate media pushing a certain narrative on the people.

The question is with all that „patriotism“: who is doing all the labour considered „dirty“, „unskilled“ and „beneath us“? British citizens?? Think about it. Patriotism is just a means to divide people, imo. To make them „feel“ instead of actually think.
