This sounds like a fab event. I love The Red House Mystery. Maybe time for a reread 😊
I'm almost done reading You'd Look Better as a Ghost by Joanna Wallace. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I was afraid it was going to be an over-the-top, campy villain story, but it's been a nice read. I like the honesty/bluntness of the character, even if I don't really like the character or what she does, at least she's honest about why she does it.
I jumped ahead and started Recursion the other day. Almost done. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!!
Hope you enjoyed it!
MONTE CRISTO is very good, but I prefer Dumas' THREE MUSKETEERS. I know someone who reads GONE WITH THE WIND again every year. I can't imagine.
Looks like a wonderful TBR! So glad you got a copy of Letters to the Purple Satin Killer! And yay for the t-shirt 🔪🩸
I read "those across the river" recently. Was a super fun and horrifying werewolf book.
Good to hear/see you putting the boots 🥾into some lame fiction.
Did you ever read it? If so, did you enjoy it? I’m reading his newest collection right now called “This Skin Was Once Mine.” So far so good.
This is one of the things I love about books- that people can have such different opinions of the same work. Hawk Mountain reminded me more of something like John Knowles than Highsmith. (I'm one of those who loved it.) That cover is much cooler though than the one I have!
I like reading negative reviews of books I liked to see what annoyed people about it. Sometimes the criticisms give me another insight on the book that I missed, which is interesting. Sometimes people are like, "there were too many big words," and that's not so handy.
I second everything you said. I DNF’d though because it did not keep my interest at all and during the second part I got frustrated with the reading experience.
I read this last year and enjoyed the experience, but I don’t remember a single thing about it.
Gave that book a Hawk Tuah!
And spit on that thang!
Giallo July, eh? Might this be a GarbAugust preface? Good luck with this event!
I definitely agree that the first part was the best part. I remember my jaw actually dropped at the end of part 1! I didn't mind the middle part, but I read it on audio, so I wonder if that helped it not feel like as much of a slog for me. Sorry it wasn't a hit for you, but I'm still glad you read it. I'll have to check out Patricia Highsmith 👀
Thanks for the review, Olly. Hope the next book is better for you. Happy reading.
No Don Quixote? Fuck off
Great cover, at least!
i had more or less the same feeling with a diffirent author, the writer is shaun hutson and the book is called epitaph, for some reason i just could not get into the story
I had a similar experience with the book. The prose didn't bother me that much, but it really felt like he tipped his hand too much in places and I could see how he was purposefully obscuring some elements rather than it feeling organic. I understand wanting to develop a sense of mystery about their pasts but it was a bit overwrought, and I spent the whole middle section waiting for another big twist that never seemed to come. I'd definitely read his next book, though, as I think he's got something as an author, this book just didn't quite work for me.
I DNF'ed David Copperfield three times before finally reading it. It's now one of my all time favorites. Great video. I get an awful case of the guilts when I DNF a book.
well sorry it didn't deliver for you. it is a debut so maybe the followup will be better
I finally finished Shogun and it was well worth the wait. I watched the original miniseries as a kid in 1980 and wanted to read the book before watching the new adaption. There's a beautiful hardcover available. 1300 pages. My favorite historical novel series of all time is The Masters of Rome by Colleen McCullough. They're all bricks.
We're around the same age and i have been telling myself I would read Shogun since I was ten... but soon! Soon! After reading Derek Raymond, George Pelecanos, the rest of the Hap and Leonard books, Amber Cowie, and Craig Terlson, and, etc, etc, etc,
I find the difference for me between watching and reading horror is that I have control of the visual when reading but when watching I'm seeing someone else's vision that I can't control. I'm really looking forward to your tier list video.
So Libra Colour or Boox Go Color 7?
Just shows you how reactions can differ. Both Duma Key and Lisey's Story are among my favorite recent King novels. As is Fairy Tale. Holly, not so much. I enjoy your channel.
have you read gulag archipelago based on true events? i really want to but its hella long😭
I did try the various options in the E-Ink center but none of them helped particularly with the color content. I have ordered the Page now and hoping that I will have a better user experience.
I see you have Giallo Mondadori series. Do you speak Italian?
No, they’re actually the English language versions, I just love the Mondadori covers
Oo I want to read 2666 too - just looked and it's being reissued here in September with a nice new cover! I dnf'd ducks as it made me anxious 😅 siân xx
So glad to see Queenpin! Such a gem. Also so cool to see an actual real-life Italian mondadori! 🔪😱 Bert
I absolutely agree.
The ghosting is unacceptable I am afraid. I pre-ordered and had to send it back and very disappointed as I really liked the look and feel of the device. The fact that they think it’s necessary to provide an option to manually refresh (via the pin wheel menu) on the screen says it all. Additionally the Kindle or the Kobo apps are not as functionally rich as on the native devices (not a lot Boox can do about that though)
I really haven’t had a problem with ghosting. Did you use the option to change the refresh frequency?
@@CriminOllyBlog I have the Boox Go Color 7 and I don't have ghosting issue when it comes to reading books or comics. Only really experienced it on website browsing. But I would think you wouldn't want to do web surfing or playing videos anyway on the Boox GC7. You would want a tablet to do that. I was contemplating the Kobo Libra Color but no microsd cards and a bit more extra effort in book transfers made me go the Boox route. Pretty happy with mine so far. The refresh frequency rate is very helpful with ghosting.
Awesome selections for July! I cant wait to hear your thoughts!
I can recommend some books for you that my 5 year old has finished with that you should be able to follow.
😂
This year I read Shantaram at 936 pages. I was sceptical beforehand that it would be trashy/cheesy but it's actually fantastic. Written by a guy who actually lived the wild unique life he is describing, which is quite unusual and definitely adds something
I feel good that I’ve read three of these.
Loved your Long Book Series! I have 8 of the 11 on my shelf and of the ones I have read The Pillars of the Earth is my favorite. As far as Gone With the Wind, I thought the burning of Atlanta was one of the best literary scenes I've read.
I got my Giallo July t-shirt a week or so ago and was really impressed with the quality. I'm going to continue my long-term project of working my way through the Ellery Queen novels. Curious about the Milne novel.
With all these new colour e-readers coming out, I doubt it'll be long until Amazon announce a new kindle with the same features
Yeah I’d be surprised if they don’t launch one before the end of the year
