  • Two rioters involved in violent disorder in Leeds city centre last weekend have been sentenced.
    READ MORE: www.thetimes.c...
Sameer Ali, 21, who was described by the judge of “good character” before the incident, was handed 20 months in prison for the offence of affray.
Adnan Ghafoor, 31, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for affray, which includes a 12-month term for breaching a suspended sentence.
Leeds crown court heard that Ali attacked three men, punching two with “full force”.
“You walked away down the centre of the road, laughing and congratulating yourself and others in your group,” Judge Guy Kearl KC said.

Will the so called person who was clearly seen setting a double decker bus on fire, will he have to pay for a new £300K bus that serves that community, or will he be let off?

@@benny210169 So even if he receives the maximum of 10 years, he may well only serve 5 years maximum, (to do it all over again). He should be then deported or made to pay for the bus that he destroyed, even if it took him a lifetime At £20 per week, this way he will learn a valuable lesson.

Sameer Ali, 21, jailed for 20 months for being part of a group of Asian men seen kicking and punching a smaller group of white men.
    Specifically:
    • Throwing left and right-handed punches towards a bald man
    • Confronting a second man whom he also punched.
    • Attacked a third man who was being held by others.
    • Returned to the second man and punching him, causing him to fall to the ground and then kicking him whilst he was on the ground.
    • Then walked away laughing and congratulating himself and others in his group.
Seems a fairly light sentence for repeated & unprovoked assaults on several different individuals?
Especially compared to some white protestors, who got 3 years for committing no assaults at all?

It's not so simple. If they don't plead guilty the process takes a lot longer. In these cases they can be held in prison whilst waiting. It can takes years. Their lawyers may have advised that pleading guilty may lead to a lesser overall sentence. Judges give a lesser sentence for a guilty plea and you get parole more easily. Check out 'blackbelt barrister' for a fuller explanation.
People plead guilty for less time in these cases.
