I’m actually friends with Andy Woods widow Xana. Lovely person. Stardog Champion is a somewhat patriotic song. Being the best you can and not repeating the mistakes of previous generations. Andy actually had a fantastic relationship with his parents. MLB recorded this album in my home, the SF Bay Area, hence the multiple references to SF in the albums lyrics. In this song, the backing vocals are done by a San Francisco Children’s Chorus of abused children. He gave them all lunch and played around with them for hours to make them happy and laugh. He had a heart of gold.

Although I’m prob being judgmental. I’ve just had a lot of experience w the types who really want you to know how cool they are and how good their taste is. Mother Love Bone was about as much an 80s rock band as they were grunge, and I have a feeling that had Wood not died, the early 90s transition from rock to grunge would have been less contentious. Fun fact: Kurt Cobain despised both this band and Wood’s stage persona because it didn’t align with his own suicidal punk rock view of the concept. Both MLB and Alice In Chains were the best of what Seattle has to offer, and most metal heads like myself appreciate what they brought to the table.

I actually saw them open for Jane's Addiction alongside Soundgarden at the Paramount theatre in Seattle in like 1990 or something. We were there for Jane's and had not heard of these other two bands. "Nothings Shocking" had just erupted and was changing everything so my friends and I were not paying much attention. I remember that Andrew Wood was drunk, he actually fell down or fell off a speaker on his ass at one point and he did a lot of banter - it was entertaining. He was dressed like a glam-rocker and his voice had that kind of 'Gary Glitter' tone. I cannot imagine that he was at his best and he may have been slightly embarrassed, I remember feeling that. The takeaway was that he and the band were having a lot of fun and had the audience in that mood for their whole set. Soundgarden was next and that was characterized by Chris's piercing voice that the sound system did not seem able to accommodate. It sounded like a car stereo with one of those old-school amps turn on and the speakers just could not handle it. His voice was too big for the sound engineers to get a handle on. Jane's owned it for sure. They had to stop at one point to cover the orchestra pit with plywood because an impromptu mosh pit appeared there. I jumped in, too. They were all friends by then I think and Jane's seemed to be really leading them into that bigger sound thanks to their Cali experience.

Before even watching this, you get a thumbs up. Just exposing your audience to this wonderful gem of a band is really all one can ask for. To be honest, I'm not sure it would even be possible to fully grok what this music was coming into it all these years later. MLB will always hold a special place in my heart and remind me of my years living in Hollywood when I was much younger.

There are so many great songs by Andrew. Some of my favorites are Man Of Golden Words, No Blues For You, Come Bite The Apple, and Until The Ocean. Another song that was written about him after his death was Chemical Straightjacket by the band Living Sacrifice. I don't expect anyone to have heard of them, and I don't expect that you'll ever listen to it, but I enjoy the entire album that song comes from. I've sung Stardog Champion at karaoke. He had a hell of a vocal range.

I totally get Ryan’s reaction. Good music brings out that “gotcha” response in some people. It won’t grab everyone, but if you’re in that lucky group it is such a rush. I would encourage listening to all songs by bands you like, not just the popular ones. Deeper in the catalog of good and great bands is where I usually find those songs that bring out the deepest responses. Peace and love the channel!

Chloe dancer/ Crown of thorns is one of the best songs in music history. For me, i'm into Meshuggah, Tool, or uber new rock, grown with Pantera, Sepultura and Metallica. That song tells me why that guy and his band were so important back then. I can't really imagine where Andrew Would have achieve. He was by far the best individual of Seattle move. Sorry Kurt Cobain fans, but that androgine tons of talent Would have shatter Nirvana into the dust. Music Would be different today if that guy Wouldn't die.

I remember when I was living in Portland and this came out. Grunge was already around, although there hadn't been any real hits. Nirvana had already released Bleach, and people were singing along to Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick." Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard from MLB had already been in Green River, which, along with Soundgarden, was kind of the original grunge band. There was a lot of grunge-type stuff in the clubs and a lot of it was kind of plodding and boring. I thought if MLB as kind of a break from that. They mixed the grunge sounds with the Aerosmith grooves and it made you want to move a bit more than a lot of the bands that were around at the time.
Commercial radio in the Northwest wouldn't touch any of it. Even commercial sounding stuff like this was entirely in record stores, college radio, and clubs. The only Northwest rock band that ever got played was Heart, but there were thousands of people at shows. It was a huge scene. I liked the fact that MLB had that kind of funky, commercial aspect to their sound. It had more zip than a lot of bands.
One thing I like about this song is the left turn it takes with the children singing. First he talks about the children singing of love, and then the guitar player goes into a wah-wah guitar solo that doesn't really sound like children singing of love. Usually when you hear a solo like that, it's people talking about sex. Then the children's chorus come back in, but they're also not singing anything I've heard children sing before. I like the fact that it's confusing and offbeat. Andrew Wood may not have succeeded in telling a story, but he's saying something. I like the fact that the groove gets you, but the concepts never really settle down.

I lived in McMinnville and the station at Linfield College played metal and grunge on Fridays, before Headbangers Ball came on later in the evening. First time I ever heard Alice in Chains ('88/'89), among other bands before they blew up nationwide was on that station. Great memories. The music of my generation.

Moved to Seattle in 88 with my bandmates from our small logging town in eastern Oregon. We didn't want to move to LA and we had heard rumor that Seattle's music scene was "decent". (Not my words) Wow were we blown away. I feel so lucky to have been there before the explosion that became "Grunge". The word "Grunge" was never said or mentioned by anyone in the music scene. It was/is purely a marketing tagline created by the record companies. We wore flannel because it was cheap and it kept us warm when it rained. It was an amazing couple of years and by 1990 word was getting out. Every band and their mother moved to Seattle and tried to copy the sound in an attempt to ride the wave. The best clubs: The Vogue (Where the vampires hung out and the famous MLB mural stood), The Off Ramp, Crocodile, OK Hotel, The Central Tavern, The OZ, the list goes on. Alice in Chains, MLB, Mudhoney, Skinyard, Screaming Trees, TAD, Soundgarden (Nude Dragons), Gruntruck, My Sisters Machine...A lifetime of memories! RIP Landrew, Layne, Chris, Stefanie, Barrett, Ben, Kurt and many others.

Totally has an 80s hair metal vibe to it with touches of grunge. You got the quintessential group "shouting" that a lot of hair metal bands did in the 80's, but you got that sludgy groove that grunge had. They definitely have a strong Soundgarden sound to them though too!
