The weirdest thing about this movie is how they minimize what really happened in Boston at the time. It was way worse than they showed. Whitey Bulger, who Jack Nicholson's character was based on was indeed an FBI informant. They let him get away with murder on several occasions and would arrest his competitors for him on request. Robert Mueller, then head of the Boston Field Office, and later FBI director, was in on it all along and authorized Bulger's crimes. In the movie the highest ranking officer shown is a lowly Captain, played by Alec Baldwin, but this corruption went all the way to the top.

I saw the Hong kong film Internal Affairs (2002) this is a remake of and, in my opinion, it blew this one right out of the water. The tension created in that film was just magnitudes higher than in this one.
I’m so pissed they fucked over billy so bad and he just wanted his life back, honestly if I was billy I would’ve just kept my mouth shut and kept the information I had on collins as collateral to keep myself alive just in case collins decided to kill the evidence would be released.
a dead man’s switch would’ve been the way to go, but billy was new to the game and completely spiraling. no time or mental room for him to be prepared for that. his mistake was meeting Collen in the first place
I'm sorry, but Billy technically screwed himself. And why? Let's see: 1. Why did Billy just leave the PD at once? That literally just tip Colin off that he knows he's the mole, so what did he think Colin was gonna do? He should have just kept his cool for a few more minutes, got his money and kept status as an undercover, and when Colin isn't looking, tell Trooper Brown or someone what he knows or at least by some time to find Dignam himself. This is a kid who has been trying to keep low in deadly situations and now he does something that is a very big lapse of judgement. 2. When Madolyn listens to the tape Billy mails to her, how does she even know that it's Costello on the tape or knows who he is? The movie shows nothing of Madolyn knowing about Colin "taking down Costello", nor anything that ties her to meeting the guy or Colin telling her. 3. Billy says that he's got the tapes proving Colin is the mole. But that literally comes out of nowhere. You see in Infernal Affairs (which the movie is based on), we the audience are shown that the mob boss has the tapes earlier in the film and Chan (who is Billy's counterpart) sees this and this is how he gets the tapes. But Billy says that Costello left them with his lawyer as his "insurance policy" (But insurance FOR WHAT, exactly? Was is for if Colin was screwing him over? Because what if Costello didn't get killed by Colin? What if it was if a rival gang shootout, or in a car accident, or just was dying of cancer or kidney failure? Is this ruthless mob boss's dying wish seriously gonna be to give a big "F*** YOU!" to Colin, just because? So the movie doesn't explain what it's insurance for.). And WHY would Costello trust Billy the most, especially when he calls him off for being a state trooper in his interrogation, not staying in the bar the night the gang killed Queenan (Martin Sheen), and the one who showed up last when Queenan was killed? When you think about it, the scene when Billy finds the social security envelope is meaningless since, because Billy finds out the truth due to the envelope, but in the very next scene, the film cuts to some time after where Billy already gets the tapes from Costello's lawyer. Meaning that the tapes would have shown who the mole was, so why not cut out the envelope. Just have Billy meet Colin, get his money and identity back, leave, then have Billy get the tapes and discover who the mole is through the voice since Billy literally spoke to Colin both on phone and in person. In Infernal Affairs, the envelope makes a little more sense, since (SPOLIERS) once Chan (Billy's counterpart) discovers that Lau (Colin's counterpart) is the mole from the envelope, he goes back to the mob boss's house to get the tapes himself, no lawyer needed, Chan just gets the tapes for leverage over Lau. 4. Once Billy says he has the tapes, he tells Colin to meet him at the place where Queenan die, BUT WHY (other than for it to sound poetic)? If Billy has the tapes, why not just go to the police station and play a boombox of the recording in front of everyone in the police to hear and Colin will be left embarrassed and in shock because now everyone's looking at him and knows what's going on? Like what was Billy's plan exactly? He has Colin meet him, then Brown shows up, and Billy asks where's Dignam? But why didn't Billy bring him himself? He spoke to the guy by phone so it should be so hard to just call Dignam up and show him the tapes. Even if Dignam resigned, the dude clearly would have heard about what happened and is still taking people's calls. Also WHY didn't Brown bring Dignam? The movie doesn't even show when Billy called Brown or Brown trying to find Dignam. Did Brown just choose to say "F*** it." and go alone? And even when Billy says to Brown that he has evidence on Colin, he didn't bring any. And so Billy heads down to bring Colin to the police, but does he really think that's gonna work, with the so-called evidence? Even if Dignam showed up, WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE!? 5. In the end when Colin is greeted by Dignam and killed, because as mention, the envelope Billy gave Madolyn had instruction to call Dignam, as I'm mentioning that's stupid beyond reason because if Billy told Brown to called Dignam and earlier told Madolyn to do the same, what if Dignam did show up and ended up getting killed on the roof? Then Madolyn would be left with the envelope which would be to contact him, BUT SHE CAN'T BECAUSE HE'D BE DEAD THEN. Didn't Billy think about this? And even if Billy gave her the envelope in case he was killed before he met Colin, the movie doesn't even show exactly how much time has exactly passed between Billy giving Madolyn the envelope and the one with the tape arriving at Colin's place. There's really no reason for Billy to be waiting, so it wouldn't have been that long. Also Colin doesn't even know about the tapes until Billy sends one to him, so why would Billy be in fear for his life? And why would Colin risk killing Billy (Especially since Colin really doesn't believe that the tape doesn't prove anything and Billy is now someone with no record of being a cop.)? Also, Dignam kills Colin, goes stealth, and the movie ends, but what about the tapes? Are they at Billy or Dignam's place? Did the cops find them after Billy or Colin's death? Did Colin find them and steal them? Will Colin really be outed as the mole? Like the movie really doesn't seem to care about any of this.
Tried to talk his way out with no luck. I felt his fear in that scene. One of the only times an actor/actress has made me feel exactly what they're portraying. I felt that knot of fear in my stomach when he says just fucken kill me.
I would have preferred first that he be exposed, and experience public condemnation, vilification, and the rejection, the vilification and retribution of his peers, and a long trial where he was held accountable for all his heinous actions and the murders he committed and was responsible for etc and then a prolonged slow torturous terrifying death. Just for fun.
I wasn't even mad at the "twist" ending. Leo was going off the rails a bit and he made the mistake of assuming things were over. Tragic, but realistic.
Tell me about it. Leo, Matt, and Mark all look the same. Leo and Matt have the same hair and Mark and Matt have the same face. Even Jack and Martin looks a tiny bit like them too.
I think one of the best things about this movie that most people don’t know about is the “X”’s!! Any character that appears on the screen with any kind of X in the background behind them.. dies!
OMG mark wahlberg, matt damon AND leo cap in one movie?!!!! that's BOMB...i always thought all 3 of them were brothers because they kinda look alike! 🤣
Cool easter egg about this movie, everyone who dies walked in front of an X at some point in the movie, for example when Billy was on that walkway the windows had giant X beams on them

I was so upset when billy died man. idk i just feel like he outplayed them it was just a 2v1 when queenman died
That "untaxable bonus" better be about 5 million dollars 😂😂
Matt and Leo look so alike, I kept getting confused throughout the whole recap
Tried to talk his way out with no luck.
I felt his fear in that scene. One of the only times an actor/actress has made me feel exactly what they're portraying. I felt that knot of fear in my stomach when he says just fucken kill me.
i get what you’re saying, but i wanted him to die. i felt his panic too, but the man absolutely deserved it.
Just for fun.
so they both ended up dead in the end
when you go undercover as a cop youre getting yourself a near 100% death sentence
How many great actors do you want?
Director:yes
The greatest ending to a movie of all time. It’s a masterpiece!
He looks down at Dignam's feet in plastic hospital boots and knows he's ***** :DDD
I wasn't even mad at the "twist" ending. Leo was going off the rails a bit and he made the mistake of assuming things were over. Tragic, but realistic.
realistic? couldn't he just play it cool and come the day after with the evidence?
One or the absolute best films I’ve ever seen. I recommend it highly
ayo is it just me or do they all look identical
Tell me about it. Leo, Matt, and Mark all look the same. Leo and Matt have the same hair and Mark and Matt have the same face. Even Jack and Martin looks a tiny bit like them too.
That Billy-Queenan meeting scene was such an intense set of writing.
I cannot say enough how much I love this movie
Dude never gets anything wrong, but finally had a slip up...It's not "The Departed" it's "The Depahded" lol.
Man the narrator's voice along with the bgm is just so soothing and it goes well with all movie explanations
The ending of this movie is great one I still remember the bitter and sweet of it.
Still my favorite film of all time! An incredible story headlined by maybe the best cast of all time
so many god tier actors in this movie
too many talented actors in one movie 😍🥰
This movie confused me. Leo Dicarpio,Matt Damon, and Matt Wahlberg all look alike.
I don't like how the title of this video perfectly summarizes The Departed 🤣🤣🤣
This movie could also been called Headshot
This movie overwhelms me every time😮💨😮💨
Legendary movie. Guy actually runs through the ENTIRE movie quite well… really need to watch for yourself though.
Moral of the story. Madeline is a loose woman.
This is a remake of Infernal Affairs for anyone interested :) Hong Kong 2002 movie with Andy Lau and Tony Leung (yes, WenWu from Shang Chi)
Well that was a rollercoaster if I’ve ever seen one ... I gotta check this one out.
this is basically Infernal Affairs but with a twist of Scorsese
very concise. the whole movie boiled down neatly.
I think one of the best things about this movie that most people don’t know about is the “X”’s!! Any character that appears on the screen with any kind of X in the background behind them.. dies!
Everyone played their part so well. Amazing movie
What if in a subtle way it’s insinuated that the father of Madelyns baby is Bill?
The end is so satisfying
PSA: DONT WATCH THIS. Go watch the movie instead. This is one you’re not gonna want to miss.
OMG mark wahlberg, matt damon AND leo cap in one movie?!!!! that's BOMB...i always thought all 3 of them were brothers because they kinda look alike! 🤣
Yeah. When I was a little kid I had no idea if the three of them were brothers or the same guy
Cool easter egg about this movie, everyone who dies walked in front of an X at some point in the movie, for example when Billy was on that walkway the windows had giant X beams on them
I love how it comes all round in the end. Dingman finally finds out
Poor billy
Yea thats what happens everday, Government fucks over people for their own gain
Wow so Madelin was really gonna let Colin get away with all that.....
So that dignam could end the story
that is a GREAT point…
Bro the ending was the best part
Even Alec Baldwin in this movie. Wow what a cast
OML i’ve been waitin forever for this video
This is one of those ones I'll be going out of my way to watch the whole thing
These movie recap channels are great time savers. 👍👍
But still watch it. It's that good.
I remember I requested this. Thank you.
I know it's an oldish movie but my heart skipped a bit when I saw my top 3 favorite actors Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg ♥ ♥
Sgt Dignams arc is the origin story for a Punisher type vigilante hero
