Native American culture and beliefs also had a major impact on the hippie stereotype as we know it today. Leather fringe, beaded headbands, dreamcatchers, turquoise jewelry, feather headdresses, spirit animals, beliefs about oneness with the natural world...and more! White hippies co-opted these elements from indigenous culture.
This - so much of the boho aesthetic is just cultural appropriation by White people. There is a reason you don't see many WoC donning this aesthetic.

Excellent point! I notice a lot of contemp fashion is a bit restrictive on the skin and lowers circulation, whereas Boho style seems to emphasize "breeziness" and looser fits and "natural" fabrics so it's probably healthier too
Yes! Such a good point. Well made, natural fibres with some room in the seams=life-long items. They don't have to look "hippie" though, make them black and neutrals and you've got the French style!
Another thing people don't understand is people with trauma who've had to raise themselves sometimes offer themselves the luxury of things others might consider "childish," once they're grown and stable. There's a tendency to take up, and hang on to interests that most people consider "a phase," in "normal," adolescence.

I’m so supportive of survivors of abuse reclaiming their childhood! But it’s sad that we have to use abuse and trauma to justify people doing what makes them happy. Like yeah, survivors of childhood abuse should absolutely be allowed to heal through reclaiming childhood, but also everyone should be allowed to like childish things. Who is it hurting to collect plushies or wear sparkly hair clips or whatever?
I would definitely love to see a Phoebe spinoff somewhere down the line, where she and Mike are raising their kids, who are just as quirky as she is!

I think there is a lot of intersection between the Sassy and Strong Black tropes - several characters I can think of could be said to be presented as both:
"Sassy" characters are often depicted as financially and s*xually independent/liberated, intelligent, and resourceful - Queen Latifah, Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes come to mind.
But I'm curious what you propose the distinction is between the Strong and Sassy tropes if you don't mind linking/commenting
@@gforce9596 There is definitely overlap. I only meant it’s a whole discussion on its own, because the “Strong Black Woman” is expected to take on all her problems and trauma on her own with no support while still being there for everyone else.
Meanwhile, the “Sassy Black Woman” is a comedy device who speaks in a highly stereotyped manner and is characterized by her loudness and cartoonish aggression, even if she sometimes “tells it like it is.”
So, sometimes it seems like we’re meant to laugh WITH her, but so often we’ve been conditioned to actually laugh AT her.
So there’s definitely overlap between the two, but there’s little nuances and subtleties that make for strong individual discussions about each trope. Hope that makes sense.

I would love to see representation of the “boho woman” as you guys have dubbed her, that is actually respectful and treats her seriously. Ever example cited in this video and every example I’ve ever seen is always treated as ridiculous in one way or another and her firmly held beliefs and lifestyle are always what is laughed at and seen as ridiculous by the other characters and audience. The issues that this character always cares about- animals, human rights, protecting the environment, are all really important. But the text always treats her passion for these things as something silly she only cares about because she’s too ridiculous to care about “real problems.” I am one of these “boho” types and I have been my whole life and this is typically how society treats me and my passions which sucks because I’m a very serious and dedicated person. I’ve also noticed how in media, if a male character embodies bohemian sensibilities, he is either treated more seriously and even praised for his beliefs or he is an emasculated joke, which shows how sexism effects the way the trope is viewed. The way this trope is used is mostly disrespectful and unrealistic to what real life boho women are like.

This! We kill more animals than humans estimated to have lived on this earth every two and a half years. Trillions of animals are suffering and the industry is the main driver of our climate and biodiversity crises. These are not funny, silly issues that only flighty immature caricatures of boho women should be caring about.
THIS! Came here to say the same. It reminds me of a quote from the movie "L'auberge espagnole" where the protagonist says at the beginning: "My mum, let's make it short, is a greenie. A real greenie. And the annoying thing about greenies is that they're always right." And I think that's the problem. I have the feeling that showmakers constantly feel the need to ridicule those characters and make them over the top and slightly to heavily crazy to stop them from becoming the personification of a constant bad consciousness and really force the audience to think about their lifestyle.
I haven't watched other series except friends and I think she is one of the best representation of confidence, dignity and self love. She is a free spirited person but knows how to make boundaries and not let anyone use her as a doormat. She is strong, independent. She knows what she wants and goes after it even if others ridicule it. She also knows how to be serious and take life seriously when needed.
I think we skipped over the cultural appropriation that many BW present. For example, Frankie from Grace and Frankie, is very performative in her views. She even had a period where she was overcompensating.
I loved Frankie but my days she was THAT Liberal white woman but she had good intentions.
I agree. She was a great character but that drove me a little crazy about her, and the show itself seemed to have no critique of it at all (even affectionate critique) except "isn't she hilarious and kooky".
Trope suggestion!! The Wineaholic. Often found in sitcoms, and often doesn't start out that way. Thinking Penny in later seasons of Big Bang Theory, Claire in Modern Family, can't remember if it was Lily or Robin in HIMYM. It's a weird device and joke setup because it makes a really casual laugh out of borderline alcoholism.
Very interesting! Also, Kelly Pitts from the game… it was implied (a few times) that she was an alcoholic the way she constantly drank wine… but it was never fully acknowledged or addressed.
Yes! Also Olivia Pope from Scandal. That wasn't a comedic show of course but the scenes of her pouring huge amounts of red wine into large glasses to decompress from her chaotic profession were always played for laughs/relatability and even get used in gifs all the time despite the behavior being pretty concerning and rarely if ever addressed on the show.

The Boho hippie aunt was perfect in 6 feet under. She was super dreamy and funny but actally was suffering with a pill problem and alot depression from being alone.
Yes! I just rewatched the whole series (still amazing; still holds up), and Patricia Clarkson & Kathy Bates were a more nuanced take of the Boho woman.

Yeah I thought the same thing, I don't consider Dre's mom to be boho at all, but Rainbow's mom is the definition of it, hell she named her daughter "Rainbow".

YES!!! It just seems like they didn't understand what boho actually means in the end. Dre's mom was eccentric, which is NOT the same as boho. While we may think of the boho lifestyle as eccentric, it doesn't make every eccentric person boho.

Yes. It’s really telling that they chose Denise instead of Freddie. She even has an incredibly realistic arc, becoming a lawyer to actually enact the changes she wants to see in the world.

I just didn’t like how she (or anyone else) reacted to the “former inmate experiment” episode. So out of character.
As a 23 year old Afro American, I grew up in a diverse town/city with different cultures and styles. My upbringing was different from many other Afro Americans and I would get a lot of hate from the community. In my mid teens, I started to experiment with different styles and in my late teens/early 20s, I began to express more of myself and experiment more. With my eclectic taste from variety of styles (gothic, bohemian, grunge, mod, tom-boyish...), I would stand out and people would notice and either love or dislike me. I would literally go to school, my college campus or to work dressed up like I'm going to some ball or like I'm the intimidating gothic girl. I'm no boho chic, but I do take elements from the bohemian style, and I make it my own. My quirkiness is definitely noticeable and sometimes it throws people off or distance themselves from me!

One thing I will say about Topanga is that even though her boho personality is initially just a joke and treated as a phase, the franchise does look back on it in a positive light in the later seasons of Boy Meets World and in Girl Meets World.

I've suggested it before, but here's again: how about a video of the Mandingo trope or the hypersexualization of black men? It's a trope that has run through many styles from Shakespeare's Othello and slapstick comedy to being a whole porn subgenre. It paints black men as always-ready, always-competent, well-endowed sex symbols, whose allure is particularly enticing for white women and feared by white men. It may look like a positive or even aspirational stereotype on surface level, but its origins have clear racist and toxic undertones.
It is not a "less harmful" stereotype. It is a major reason that countless Black men have been falsely accused of and wrongly convicted of sexual offenses for centuries.

I love boho fashion & share a lot of the beliefs and interests mentioned here but I also have an anxiety disorder and wish I was more carefree. That's why real people don't fit into characters tropes, I guess.

So I feel like whoever wrote the script for the video was thinking of rainbows mom on blackish the characters name is Alicia . But I think the editor just saw the note of mom on blackish and put ruby ( andres mom ) who is a series regular on there . This is proof we need more black folks behind the scenes because if the people who make this content watched blackish they would know these things . Ruby is the exact opposite of this trope !

Yes!! I thought of her as well as Allison’s mother in The Affair and Zoe Kravitz’ character in Big Little Lies (which is funny considering her mother is Lisa Bonet).
Denise is the Best boho woman IMO. She starts as a ditsy highschooler who needs to learn about how to care about things that really matter, to a dreamy eyed young adult that needs to learn how to be responsible while sticking to her ideals, and ends as a fully formed adult who still cares deeply but has better learned how to balance her passions and responsibility.
I love all the different aspects of the female tropes, but can you also please do more male tropes in the future?
You missed a lovely boho character as an example: Sigrid Eriksdottir as played by Rachel McAdams in Eurovision: Fire Saga. Starts out as 'naïve & dreamy' love interest but kind of ends up as the main character with a lovely character arc about learning to love yourself and to appreciate your own talents and to prioritise your own needs before the man in your life ❤

I'm always drawn to these kinds of characters in shows and movies. I'm boho myself, but I guess a more...toned down? version of it. Like, not quite so bubbly and extroverted. Maybe there's a subset of boho women who are introverts. lol

They are praised for practices and ideals/believes that poc have been punished for and most of the time their style is just cultural appropriation. Friends literally copied a black show called living single and Phoebe is basically a white version of Synclaire . Yet there weren’t many black or other women of color in this video. And the term boho is literally just Romani culture rebranded and has done more harm to Romani women than good , the hippie movement fashion wise took inspiration straight from different poc groups. We need to call it what it is.

The Boho style really peaked in the 70's, when Stevie Nicks took it mainstream with "Rhiannon":

Though Stevie herself famously personified this feminine archetype, I think her bandmate Christine McVie was even more naturally connected to the Boho style of the 60's. She came of age in 1960 in Birmingham, England and experienced the hippie era first hand. Stevie Nicks was more of a nomadic California girl who got her start with Lindsey Buckingham during the late 60's psychedelic era. When the Boho style was revived in the 90's, it took most of its inspiration from the 70's Californa hippie girl archetype, which was really just a stone's throw from 90's Hollywood. By comparison, the original 60's British Invasion era Bohemian style has become an exotic rarity.
My favorite was Freddie Brooks from A Different World.....I always remember when her mother that she effectionatley called Jonie shows up to campus
Most hippie boho women I've met in real life were actually type A personality; boho house super clean, diet kept to a tea, tightly controling everything, never showing big emotions. I have this theory that they crave freedom so much becaus they are the opposite of that image: unhappy, full of rules. They keep going to all these seminars and retreats, but really they are incapble of letting go whatever it is inside that makes them so stressed.
I’m the person you describe. Desperate to let go and relax but completely unable to do so. I feel seen. 😂❤
*TROPE SUGGESTION:* The Weird Boy Trope (examples: Sheldon Cooper, Jughead Jones, Edward Scissorhands/any Tim Burton protagonist).
I think it would be interesting to cover the duality of this trope. One the one hand, Weird Boys are a rebellion against toxic masculinity. One the other hand, some of them (like incels) perpetuate it.
I was the type A girl boss girl but now I no longer want to be that especially since I got so stressed that I ended up in the hospital multiple times. I feel trapped and want to be free. I decided I wanted to be more like the boho woman. I even started changing my wardrobe.

this trope always bothered and made me mad. like the none-aired pilot of buffy the vampire slayer. if you ask me, first willow was a "duff" for the director and producers but then, they decided that the actress didn't had a "believable chemistry" with the other actors. ugh! that was so disgusting to me...
and it's very real thing in life.
The absent parent returns. The long absent parent pops back into their usually older or grown child lives and says I was scared, selfish and now all I want is to be apart of your life because I’m changed person, with this heir they have this sense of entitled instantaneous forgiveness and when that doesn’t happen at first I feel we’re supposed to feel sorry for them. Then by the end of the episode they get it. It’s not that I don’t think these stories are important they are but I feel they aren’t done right like I understand it’s supposed to be about second chances and forgiveness but I always feel it’s they get rewarded for their bad behaviour.

Sinclair seems more of the “quirky, black girl” definitely… but I didn’t see much of the boho traits in her character.

I don't know if I would classify Ruby as a "Bohemian" type. Her type of dress is just what some women her age wear. Ruby has also made it abundantly clear in many episodes that she was a victim of many systemic problems in society where she couldn't afford to be passive and "let the universe fall into place." She even has an arc where she can't accept that her daughter is a lesbian getting married to another woman. That's not very "Mother Gaia", is it?
Ruby faced racism, colorism, spousal abandonment, and single motherhood. Although she had many lovers, she was definitely a fighter. A more appropriate character (which I don't know why she wasn't used) is RAINBOW'S mother, Alicia. They literally raised their children in a hippie commune.
