  • Episode 3 - Sunnmøre Alps - Cycling The Atlantic Coast - Norway
    Day 3 is as epic as you can get on a bike here in Norway. We have 24 hours before our boat heading North leaves Ålesund. What better way to spend that time than to cycle around the Sunnmøre Alps and two of Norway's most spectacular fjords? Is Norangdalen Norway's greatest road?
    About the Series: In early May 2023, I set off to document Norway's most famous long-distance route. The Atlantic coast, which is part of the Eurovelo 1, is perhaps the most spectacular coastline in the world. This 6 episode series will take you beyond what you may have seen on youtube before. We pull out all the stops to capture this unique area in all its wonder and beauty. Join us for an incredible ride to the Arctic.

    I did Geiranger - Hellesylt - Norangsdalen - Volda one nice day in June 1990 on a bike and I can still vividly remember that late evening with fog and a bit of rain in Norangsdalen. It was pure magic on a bike. I still vividly remember it. That even after tens of thousands of kilometers on a bike. It is one of the roads on this planet you have to do on a bike. It is the best bike road in Norway. The road is scary as heck too.... Those vertical mountain walls were close. Scary close.

    I cannot believe @MatthewNorway cycled through my beautiful home village of Sykkylven and the only footage is of his boots inside the ferry over to Magerholm 😭Of course, Norangsdalen is a tough act to follow.

You have a really great way of telling your story with your hobbies. The way you narrate and compliment it with the different views. Really well done. I see there is a huge benefit of having one or more with you to help capture. Great work mate. Truly inspiring. Thank you 👏🏻

    I just came back from my first and incredible journey in Norway. Now your video make me want to come back as soon as possible and experience this road and many others as well. Next year for sure!
    My approach to the tunnels (as well as very loud roads) was finally to use earplugs. I found out the about min 60% of the stress comes from the deafening noise. And to know about traffic coming from behind my Garmin Varia was a game changer.
    Matthew, your bag setup has changed completely. Is it mainly due to your sponsor or were you also tired of using a backpack? And I guess you don't have to carry all of your gear by yourself now, right?

    Norangsdalen is joyous. I stayed at knutegarden and the wonderful host took us to the valley where she goes to write music and poetry near a waterfall. I’m not artistic, but cycling there will be as poetic as it gets-so I’m planning to go back. That waterfall formation sure rocked, eh? 😆

    Ah, the Festøya - Solavågen ferry route. I have no idea how many times I've been just too late to one ferry and have had to wait for the next, there...
    Hellesylt isn't a town. It barely counts as a village. The view up high is pretty nice, though. The last time I was there was back when they finished the tunnel you rode through, so a few years ago.

    Was the old road circumventing around the tunnel after Hellesylt closed?
    A little later in the season there is a really old "road" or rather postal route that goes over the mountain after the first tunnel, at the view point. You can hike it or just hike up on top to get an amazing view of the Geiranger fjord. I but you with your lightweight bike and no luggage could carry your bike and avoid the last and longest tunnel.
    You could also take the ferry directly from the point in Hjørundfjorden you cycled more "inland" around the mountain and to Urke, saving a few kilometers and time.

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  Před 10 měsíci

      Yes, unfortunately, the old tunnel roads were closed. That postal route sounds interesting! Thanks!

    • @Mr.Engineer.
      @Mr.Engineer. Před 10 měsíci

      @@matthewnorway
      The postal road should be "semi flat" and passable as it back in the days were build to be passable for horses.
      It haven't been maintained for well, over a 100 years, so the condition might be a little worse today 🙃

    4:08 the Hjørundfjord was started 2.6 mill years ago !? You are dead wrong here, proves you are not a geologist. There were heavy tectonic forces working on Norway because of the collision of Greenland with Scandinavia ("Baltica") and subsequent retreat from at least 430 mill years ago, probably the most heavy work was done 405-380 mill years ago. Undoubtedly great faults ripped the land apart, great rivers ( Norway was at the equator at the time ) filled the valleys and eroded them. Later the sea water flushed into the lower lying valleys and made the fjords. The ice ages had an influence, yes, but the main creator of the landscape was not the quaternary ice ages, but the imense tectonic forces about 400 million years back in the Devonian geologic age.
