  • The full force of the west coast climate greeted me as I left Stavanger heading north to Bergen. Three days of rain and cold weather was a wake-up call to how tough this coastline can be. But we persevered and were treated to beautiful views as we road into Norway's prettiest town, Bergen.

    I feel your pain... I was on a bike packing tour. Day 8 thought I had got to my destination ..Had a beer ,coffee and a bacon buttie. Then realised I had another 11 miles to go all uphill..mentally I had switched off and those 11 miles were so hard.. it makes you appreciate the good days. You do what you have to do.. At times touring is more mental than physical.... Great video's. Really like your editing style. Top stuff.

    I’ve watched several of your videos, and it’s fun to see you ride on several of the same roads as I’ve ridden, and ones I plan to ride. I grew up on Bømlo, so it was extra special to see a few shots from there 😊

I’m happy to answer questions in the comments section but at present I’m unavailable to provide more detailed individual advice. However, I’ll be posting more practical videos in coming months that I hope will provide lots of great info for people who want to cycle in Norway.

    Hi 🤗! I'm wondering what your recommendations are for such rainy weather regarding clothing, layering, materials etc... Is the main goal to stay dry or at least warm (even if wet)? I'm an experienced hiker and I've learned to handle rainy days, but I'm a total beginner in bikepacking and I'm trying to figure out how to prepare for rainy days on a bike! I would really appreciate the point of view from someone as experienced as you. Thank you for the amazing and inspiring content on your CZcams channel!

    Great video, keep it coming. How do you like the hoover bar on your Canyon? Myself I have a Grail AL but thinking to get me a SL, more comfort in that bar in your opinon?

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  Před 3 lety

      Many thanks Johan! I like the hoover bar design it's original and innovative but unsure how much extra comfort it creates. The only way of really knowing is to ride both the AL and SL and compare. Overall the bike's handling and geometry are superb. I will be publishing a review of the bike in the coming weeks :).

    Great Vid! I'm planning a similar trip. How long did your trip take and how far did you cycle each day? What's the deal with booking the ferries...can you pay for them when you turn up or is it pre booked....Is there an app or website for them? I'm undecided whether to cycle from Oslo to Bergen of from kristiansand to Bergen. Any advice would be very appreciated. Thank you

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  Před 2 lety +1

      Oslo to Bergen more of an adventure but a lot more climbing. 90% of ferries are free. Pay on board the ones that aren't. 120km a day.

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  Před 3 lety

      Hi Marcos, thanks for your kind words! Yes, getting wet in Norway is part of cycling but you’ll hopefully get plenty of good days as well. Personally if the weather turns bad I reduce my distance for the day and avoid wild camping. A lot of the campsites in Norway will have drying rooms for cyclists/hikers and if you have the budget (€46-75) book a small cabin (most campsites have them). I will do a video on my bikepacking set up. Avoid the Apidura front handlebar bag but the others are good.

      @Andersensindre Před 3 lety

      @@matthewnorway Nice. To Copenhagen via Sweden, or via Kristiansand? The old road from Oslo to Kristiansand «gamle sørlandske» are just great to ride. Almost no traffic and good quality tarmac.

    Hello again! I'm planning (lockdown permitting) an Oslo - Bergen or Oslo Stavanger bike trip this summer. I've watched both your videos and can't decide which to opt for. I'm a fairly experienced 'bikepacker' - if you had to choose one which would you suggest?

    • @matthewnorway
      @matthewnorway  Před 3 lety +1

      Such a tough question to answer. You have quieter roads heading to Stavanger but the climbing is steeper and more intense over the mountains. The Bergen trip includes the famous off-road Rallarvegen which is epic (but be aware that might not open until mid July if the winter snowfall is high). If I was you I would cycle to Bergen, jump on a boat to Stavanger and cycle back to Oslo 😛. But if you can only do one hit Bergen, I can't explain why it's just an overwhelming feeling of adventure that it incites.

      @@matthewnorway Great answer. Really appreciate your candid answer. I was leaning towards Bergen... But those tunnels... Boy oh boy. Hard to avoid anywhere in Norway but still. Looking forward to seeing your next adventures 😊
