This code did not deduct for bad form enough but sure made a big deal over a B level jumps. Every pass was horrific looking. Ponor got a wake-up call in 2005 when the code changed to reflect that. This music is the reason why she scored 9.7+. This choreo was only a level above what almost every Romanian gymnast received in the Belu era, it even featured the Romanian choo-choo right before the third pass.
Very much so. Her floor final score made me just shake my head indisbelief. As soon as execution of tumbling mattered she got hammered in score. Unfortunately the real floor star of that team was injured and couldn’t do floor- Oana Ban. Her routine was the one that had it all- clean tumbling and exciting dance.
how this this score better than cheng fei in team finals? i mean they're both really great but cheng had more difficulty and better execution. catalina had bad form on her passes
but not a 10.0 start. you can also take like .05 off back then so each little error meant less. Cheng also had issues with her dance when Catalinas was spot on. she just took advantage of this code nicely
It wasn't a remarkable routine, actually nobody expected the Romanians to steal the show like they did. They lost the world title in 2003 and Munteanu, their biggest hope was out due to injuries just before the Olympics. The experience and professionalism of B&B won the gold.
@@victorgr.3938 yeah, no- it really wasn’t remarkable. The code was just so laden with dance requirements that she got away with horrendous tumbling form. Once the code changed she started getting hammered in execution. Oana Ban was their real floor star it’s just that she got injured.
@@saragrant9749 I am not a Ponor fan but honestly I really enjoyed this routine. That said the tumbling is not up to gold medal standard at all IMO. She probably still deserved it this day only since people were either out of finals or made big mistakes (people like Cheng Fei and Santos) but she no way should have gotten the scores on floor she was getting, and the 2001-2004 code for floor was stupid with its overemphasis on jumps. Without that someone like Mohini who had great tumbling and stylish, unique presentation herself could have medaled or even won with the way finals went down, but since she isn't good at the dance leaps on floor she had no chance. Terin Humphries is another who got killed by that part of the code this quad. Totally agree on Ban. So sad she had to miss both the All Around and floor.

this had a 10SV still. Extra difficulty was just extra risk and Catalina performed better, which counted for a lot
