The CLP685 and CLP675 have quite a heavy action. I've heard some people that love it, and some people that don't care for the touch. The NU1X, on the other hand, is more universally liked for the action. For me, the NU1X is the easier piano to play, the CLP685 has a feel that takes some adjustments, but it's nice. But that's me. I'd advise trying the CLP685's action first, especially if you're used to the CLP645s action. It's lighter.
I prefer the CLP685. I do like the NU1X's action better. Both sound quite nice.
Edit: after trying the NU1X there is something that I recommend the NU1X for. It has a higher amount of dynamic levels. I believe the CLP685 has 127 velocity levels which translates into a good amount of dynamics. However, the NU1X has a lot more, due to having optical sensors, vs 3 levels in the CLP685. So, that means a greater amount of dynamics. A bit more progression between pp and ff and it seems to have a stronger ff in the NU1X vs. the CLP685.
I just received my NU1X after selling off my CLP675. This hybrid totally blew me away. The action is indistinguishable from an acoustic silent piano if you turn off the sound of both instruments. Digital pianos do not give you that feeling under your fingers of hammers hitting strings but the NU1X manages to replicate that.
The speakers of the NU1X on paper is weaker than the CLP675 but the former sounds so much better in reality than the latter. The CLP line of pianos all have that muffled sound to them.
I was initially considering the Kawai CA99 because I wasn’t able to test the NU1X and simply bought it based on reviews. I’m actually thankful the risk I took paid off.
Interesting comment. In the video, the sound of the NU1X sounded better, but in paper the 685 looks better, besides by having spruce speakers. I never thought of what u said, the feel of hitting a string. Sometimes I doubt the keys of the 685 is good, that shortened key with counterweights do not look too reliable to me.

I know right! Everyone was telling me the 785 and the NU1X should have the same "technology" inside aside from the hammer action of course. But idk, for me for some reason the NU1X just sounds MILES better! It's so realistic!

Hello, this is a very informative video. I was looking at the CLP 685 today and the salesperson directed me to the CSP 170 and told me I would "have more fun" with that model due to the ability to hook the ipad to it and play along to many, many songs. It sounded like the ipad app was not available with the CLP 685. If it is, that's definitely the piano I want. I think it offers more than the CSP 170. The CSP has the lights in the front, but I read music, so I don't necessarily need the lights....
Your salesman is wrong. The CLP685 absolutely CAN connect to the Smart Pianist app after a firmware update last year...

Good job on describing these instruments. AvantGrand is best for the purists, because if the upright action. I think Yamahas assumption is that the purist won’t want all the technology, but they do want the feel.

I have only been able to find a NU1x to try out and the feel was amazing. Everything below the 685 feels and sounds fake. Does the 685 have a better touch than the lower model numbers in that series?
David Burnett 685 has counterweights and will have the best touch out of the CLP 600 series! We have both at our store you should come in and check it out for yourself!

They should have compared the N1X with the CLP 685 instead, would be a fairer comparison. Can't really decide which one to get, I did tried playing the NU1X, the touch and sound were beautiful, so i'm sure the N1X would be even better in theory. 🙄

That's a feature for showroom pianos. As far as I know it's not available for consumers.

I honestly couldn't see myself using all those extra bells and whistles that would come with the Clavinova. I've hardly used anything outside of the Grand sound on my current Yamaha piano, as most of my interests lay in classical repertoire. So I think I'm leaning towards getting an AvantGrand.
The Clavinova is geared more towards pop music and band settings with their multitrack recording and thousand different instrument samples.
There's never been a time when I've thought to myself, "Man, if only my piano could sound like a saxophone ..."
So yeah. AvantGrand for me.
I'm also looking for a good digital piano that would replicate a grand piano. I don't care either about having many features, as long as the sound and key action is the closest to a grand, but if they both have the same feel, touch, why not the 685? Apparently they have same feel on key action? Besides, the spruce speakers looks interesting. What u say?
There are 3 different types of Clavinovas. I wouldn't say the CLP is strictly for pop and multitrack recordings, that's the CVP line. The CLP has some extra instrument sounds like vibes and strings, harpsichords and organs, but it is a piano-centered instrument.
The AvantGrand is more about giving the buyer the actual action from an acoustic piano. That's the main difference, not pop vs. Classical. The CLPs can definitely be used for Classical if you find their action agreeable.

This video is not what I was expecting to hear. The NU1X would be my top choice even though it doesn't have all the "bells and whistles" because it is a hybrid vs. a purely digital.

So, to be clear: the "fake" action of the Clavinova is better (being it "the same of a grand) than the real action of an acoustic piano? 🤔 both in feel and touch?
The "real" action of NU1X isn't that great either (also way heavier) from lots of people's feedback. Personally I felt it's worse than Casio's GP hybrid series. I ended up buying a Kawai CA78 (the Onkyo sound system and sampling is amazing), the GFII action is on par with Casio GP, if not better.

I m hoping the NV10 will decrease or something (but my interest in buying a piano is different 😅: I studied classical piano (long) time ago.... so I would like to buy just a nice one that "last forever", in order to play from time to time and chill and to have a nice piece of forniture in my new house, no exams, no more progress for me). After that the CA78 is probably the best considering quality/price obviously. I agree with you about Casio versus Kawai differences. Casio action is a bit "qwirky": they removed a piece because it is useless being it "digital". The result is that you can repeat even faster than on acoustic, so it would be even better. On the other hand it's not "completely real", because a real acoustic has that tiny component.
Purism vs. Progress.
Great pianists play Rachmanichoff on the Casio so it s a great piano for sure and I think 90% of people would not feel it anyway but.. that's what I have been told.
Even on acoustic pianos the actions are different between pianos so it eventually comes down to personal preference, the same as on digitals.

The CLP685 has a grand piano action and the NU1X has a upright piano action which will have more sluggish feel than the CLP685. Hope this helps.
Not sure why, but imho the NU1X just sounds miles better, cant put my mind to it why exactly that is, but it kinda does

"Best digital piano on the market" might be Kawai CA 98 or Kawai Novus NV10 instead.
I own a NV10 and i have to say while i like the look and action, the sound production, either via built in speakers or headphones is subpar to yamaha. Also nearly every voice in soundmode apart from the piano voices are terrible.
Tyr Vintersol Just played the NU1X and personally i think Kawai is much much better. The keys feel like plastic i lile the ebony touch from Kawai much more. Also i think the Shigeru Kawai is superior in sound vs the CFX but thats personal preference. The usability finding stuff in the manual then pressing a key on the keyboard is crappy, too.
Everyone has a personal preference just like you said, just long as YOU love, is all that matters.
Hi Max. The Novux NV10 is a new hybrid. So, it should sound wonderful and play smoothly. I don't find anything superior about the Kawai digitals, except for perhaps action. And in terms of acoustic pianos, CFX vs. SK-EX is a preference. Neither is really superior, they're both top pianos in tone, quality, and action. I think, in all fairness, Kawai's digital piano quality doesn't match their acoustic piano quality. There have been more problems with Kawai's digital pianos than Roland or Yamaha on average. Hopefully, that's improved. I think Kawai vs. Roland vs. Yamaha is great competition and makes for better pianos from all of them.

Still far away from a real piano... I'd say that it is not too bad when you don't have the choice, principally cause of neighborhood in an apartment, and it is cheap compared with a real piano, even a good upright one.
There is always room for improvement, look at technology just a few years ago. I can't imagine what they will come up with in the future.
Inside of headphones and with the settings for resonances on high, they give a good representation of a piano. Software pianos do better, but there are latency issues with them and they take up a lot of computer resources. And these can always be used as MIDI controllers if you want a deeper piano sound. I think they sound better than many uprights.
Greene Music Coldplay has been using a yamaha digital hybrid for recording and live shows since 2001! Digital hybrids pianos are the next normal:)
They are too expensive, if any one of the electronic circuit boards becomes faulty,repairs will be expensive and that is if the parts are available. It's better to buy a baby grand Yamaha for almost half the price and which can last for many years.
They have a 5 year parts and labor IN HOME warranty which is way longer than any electronic on the market including apple. most Yamaha's last 20+ years, they are built to last.

All I see in the same price range from Yamaha are uprights that need expensive tuning and sound boards that need to be in well maintained in a controlled environment to continue sounding good.
I have Yamaha digital synths from the 80s that still work perfectly and never need maintenance. Let’s not pretend a piano that old would be in as good shape with no maintenance.

Get the NU1X if you want your neighboor thinking you are hammering daylie for hours at the ground with 10 brooms at the same time ... yes - it's that loud.
CLP line does not come even close to Hybrids. NU/N are in their own league. This is the closest match for a real acoustic instrument you can buy today.
CLPs are getting worse from generation to generation. For example, a properly tuned CLP-280 (the default settings are terrible) sounds more realistic than CLP-685, especially if you use a good pair of monitor headphones (e.g., HD580/600/650/etc) or high-grade monitor speakers.
And do not trust youtube videos much. They show almost nothing. You can make a very expensive mistake. Go to a store and play all these instruments for a couple of hours. Ideally with and without headphones.
