@@dwylhq874 The reliability of the charging stations is part of my point. They are cash cows, set it and forget it. Tesla is hands down the best charging system around the world. Now that the EV market is growing well beyond Tesla there is an opportunity to make even more money without outputting more capital by licensing access to other car companies. Charging stations have very predictable overhead and minimal maintenance to provide revenue compared to gas stations.
This is not like firing the technical staff in twitter and therefore having technical problems with stuff that doesn't increase revenue. This is like having the most number and best gas station network in the early 1900's then slow down building them or stop investing in them just when gas cars were taking off. Letting competitors steal your greatest advantage/cash cow.

This just goes to show how disconnected Elon is from Tesla and how much of a part time CEO he is. Multiple new sales initiatives go through and he has no idea about it? He then cancels the Costco deal after hearing about it on X? Maybe he should spend less time online and more time talking to his employees. Interesting; I’ve had mostly the opposite reaction: In the 9 days we’ve had our MYLR I’ve found FSD to work far better than I expected. That, not to suggest that it’s flawless by any means.
Then again, we rarely have fog out here, especially not this time of year. However, inability to work with fog is, arguably at least, due to Tesla removing radar and ultrasonic sensors, just for cost-cutting.

FWIW though, *_I_* often find it difficult to drive when the Sun is directly ahead. In 47 years of driving, I’ve only had one accident (in which there was any damage). I turned into the morning Sun and was thus suddenly blinded, and can-openered my right front fender on a stationary object that was parked in the shadow by the side of the road. Thankfully no damage to that stationary object.
Yeah, I have no delusions that it’s flawless. Definitely have to watch it carefully. *_So far_* though, I’ve found that FSD deals with the Sun in its eyes about as well as I do, which is “acceptably, but not ideally.” However, I’ll be sure to eagle-eye it especially carefully in such scenarios.

@@DCGreenZone, so far I’ve seen FSD break the law only once. Specifically, it executed an otherwise-flawless right turn at an intersection, but failed to signal that turn. I have also seen a couple cases where it at least _looked like_ it was about to take a left turn into the right lane, but I intervened. So, I don’t know _for-sure_ that would have broken the law in those cases, but it did look like it was about to.
Most of the cases where FSD has, in my view at least, driven badly, but not technically broken the law, have involved lane changes, such as spending too long in the left lane, making lane changes questionably soon after taking a freeway exit, or passing a slow-poke car questionably soon before needing to take an exit to the right.

2023 Model Y Long Range owner, and I agree with you. FSD is a disaster in my vehicle. FSD feels years from being close to a true level 5 self-driving car. I have never had a drive in FSD mode where I didn't have to take over multiple times, from changing lanes into other vehicles to sudden mystery slowdowns on high-speed freeways. There could be something amiss with my car, but Tesla's service is awful and refuses to investigate it.
I really want Tesla to succeed, but right now, they are on a trajectory to not be a car company long enough to complete full autonomy (or even level 4).

A good CEO picks smart, effective top executives, lays out a clear vision for them to follow, and empowers them to run their respective areas. If this was happening at Tesla, none of these embarrassing incidents would take place. You don't see this kind of sloppiness at Apple, for example. Why? Because it is a well-run company, as opposed to the dumpster fire at Tesla. When a company is led by an authoritarian dictator who suffers wild, manic, drug-induced swings and has literally zero impulse control, chaos ensues. It's value is in driverless taxis. People can't afford to own things anymore (apparently, anyways) and are becoming more and more conditioned to accept monthly subscriptions. Drivers are the largest cost component in the ride share equation. Remove the driver and non-auto-enthusiasts of limited means, starting in urban markets but potentially growing beyond them, will start to question the need to own a car of their own when they can subscribe to a driverless taxi service for maybe $500 a month. No maintenance, no parking, no insurance, no registration, no charging or fueling, no driver for those who find that awkward.....
For private vehicle owners who don't intend to share their cars or profit from them, FSD would be a luxury that they can choose to pay for if they want it, but they aren't the primary market for it, just the test and development mules at the moment. I suspect AI is going to be what I call "What balance of ability" do you want.
That is to say when a system reaches it's optimum, it can be pushed to improve one aspect only for other aspects to decrease.
For example a motor can be made to rev faster, but at the expense of reliability, increasing machining tolerances will increase reliability at the expense of cost of production which in turn means less materials.
I suspect AI FSD can be improved to make more trips that do not need intervention but at the expense of the very rare but very bad accident. Sort of a diminishing returns situation. One of those Sunk Costs situations.

It is SO basic that if Tesla would just make ads that point out all the benefits of Evs, and Teslas in particular, they would sell themselves. The majority of people are completely ignorant about Evs. All they know is that they run out of charge and catch on fire. I know this because that was me 9 months ago. And then I started watching YT videos and was blown away by what Evs actually are. If people knew about the actual benefits and true statistics, they would buy Evs. (I did.)

By lumping autopilot and FSD data together in the safety stats, it is very difficult to evaluate how much these feature improve safety for the simple reason that people using only autopilot will primary use this on freeways and highways when there is not a lot lane changing, etc. going on. This mode of travel is easily the safest compared to congested and neighborhood roads, and could account for most of the improved safety stats. A proper safety study should be apples-to-apples, i.e. the same roads and conditions mile-for-mile. I believe Tesla has this data, and the fact that they don't break it out and analyze it in this way make me suspicious that the safety improvement of autopilot and fsd is not nearly as good as they are representing.

Elon Musk is a brilliant innovator. The very idea that Tesla and SpaceX both survived startup and are thriving is remarkable. Unfortunately, his talent for running those companies is minimal at best. I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that if he doesn't move away from Tesla, sooner or later he will run it into the ground. He is the sole reason Tesla's efforts are concentrated on a "robo taxi" rather than a reasonably priced, entry level vehicle that would appeal to a majority of prospective EV buyers.

He basically made a deal with large investment firms. He will run the company like mary barra runs gm in exchange for their backing in quarterly votes. The most important voted was his massive free stock award. Tesla used to let engineering guide them, not mbas will guide them into layoffs for no reason and dividends. Do not be surprised when tesla announced a dividend.
Elon is cashing out to funnel money and resources into twitter. He is currently being sued by tesla shareholders for transferring AI tech and tesla employees to twitter so he could control the tech personally. He intends to sell AI services based on tesla knowledge back to tesla. Spacex and tesla currently advertise on X which is nothing more than a transfer of cash from those companies to X. Advertisements for electric cars make no sense on a right wing platform. Musk almost got banned from being CEO of tesla over a pointless tweet years ago. Somehow the SEC is ignoring all these shareholder lawsuits that musk is losing and not regulating like they should be.
