    Sundown Audio has become very popular among the SPL guys, but what about those who want to upgrade their factory system or hide a small amp in the center console? Today we take a closer look at the SAM-500D, an ultra-compact 500W monoblock amp. How does it perform on the Amp Dyno? What about powering a 12" DVC subwoofer? We'll try both and stick around to see what's inside this mini beast of an amp...

    Very good performance but not a good value. At these power levels who is actually running 1 ohm loads? In addition, at 1 ohm, with the components packed so tight with no fan it will suffer from overheating. Unless it is used in a motorcycle, this amp loses to the Alpine and many others in its power range that can be had for much less money.

    • @WSKRBSCT
      @WSKRBSCT Před 4 lety

      @@shonuff7317 Sorry, but I'm pretty sure that there have been plenty of amplifiers that have had fuses that didn't require one to open them up to figure out whether or not a fuse had blown - like almost every one I've ever owned - ever. Carver, Soundstream, PPI, even Pyramid... Not one required me to take it apart to determine the problem. And that doesn't take into account all the amps I sold and installed from 1992-1999. But, what do I know? 😉

    • @shonuff7317
      @shonuff7317 Před 4 lety

      Kramit The Frog I don't know how you can see blown caps and things of that nature (internal parts) if that .5 ohm didn't blow those fuses I just doubt highly I would blow them at 1 ohm which it is recommended for

    • @WSKRBSCT
      @WSKRBSCT Před 4 lety

      @@shonuff7317 Generally, a fuse should blow before a cap. And, generally, one will smell magic smoke (and maybe hear it) when a cap blows. Any way you slice it, a blown fuse - especially one that is not internal - is easier to diagnose when one doesn't need to dismount an amp and then take it apart in order to do a simple fuse replacement, which is more likely than a blown cap. After all, the purpose of a fuse is to avoid blowing caps or other surface-mounts.
      I have literally sold a couple thousand amps and I'm an MECP-certified installer, FWIW. I tend to think I might have a good grasp about that which I speak.

    The "notes" in most rap type music are sine waves. A better test to see how good the amplifier's damping and control over cone movement would be something that has well recorded kick drum hits or synth hi-q hits. But most looking at this just want something that can make noise. Imagine a dragon farting in a small room! ;)
    Another thing to remember at 75% efficiency (1OHM) 25% power (~140W) is HEAT. This TINY amp has a very limited surface area to dissipate that much power. In other words, the fucker will get really hot quick if you're doing more than simple 50Hz burps.
    p.s. a speaker is a reactive load. ;)

    Real mosfets, not a chip amp at that size, and does ratings? It's awesome. Way too expensive for 500w, but aside from that it's a wicked little guy. Killin it as always BigD. Hey, between the transistors and that aluminum transfer block thing, there's a pad, you think it's good enough or one should smear both sides of the pad in computer thermal paste (non conductive, those pads are there for electrical isolation sometimes)? I got some stuff recently that have the same cooling thing going on and I'm not sure if it's worth the effort taking everything apart and adding paste or if the difference isn't there/or maybe worse? If I had a thermal probe and lots of time I would stick it to the metal part of the transistor and measure temps at static loads between pasted pad and how it comes. But I can't do that.

    Maybe not officially marine certified, but the board DOES have a clear conformal coating protecting it. Just shows they cared a little, for example, even Apple products don't even do that. Maybe you could silicone seal the end-caps on. The downside to this amp I see is maybe those cheap "Cap-top" capacitors are the failure point, either from heat (being so close right next to the MOSFETs), or from the electrolytic vent not being protected from humidity.

    For sizes an easy method may work. Place a USA dollar bill upon it, beside it and in front of it which in direct contact with as much. USA dollars are found worldwide and we in the USA can take a dollar from our pockets to check against to image the actual size. Just a suggestion.
    That was written 8 minutes before I saw the $20. Smart to use USA denominations as they are all the same sizes regardless of denomination. Except monetarily: $20 = $1, = $2 = $5, = $10, = $50, = $100.
