      My mailman was a long time customer before he retired from the Postal Service. He ran a 1997 Tacoma 4-cylinder on his rural route for 20 years straight. He ran plain old Valvoline 5W30 and a Toyota oil filter every 5-7K miles. The truck had 400K miles on it when he retired and he sold it to another rural mail carrier and I assume it’s still totin the mail. In the 400K that I kept it serviced for him he never had an engine repair. Not even a timing chain. They were one well engineered truck from 97-2003. The best Toyota trucks ever produced.

      These are great filters, but the new Fram Endurance available only at Walmart is physically identical to the Amsoil EAO and Royal Purple Extended Performance made by Champion labs. They are $12.97 for every single model of the FE product line. It has a fully Synthetic filter media and worth the extra few dollars. These were the top model until the Endurance model was released. But again, they are IDENTICAL besides the exterior label as Amsoil and RP filters. I use both Amsoil EAO and Fram Endurance. This channel has a video that opens an Amsoil and Fram Endurance together and compares them.

      I hate the grippy stuff, makes it all but impossible to remove the filter using a cap wrench. That is my preferred filter removal tool. What happens is cap wrench slips inside on the grippy stuff, and filter won't. Otoh, the new Endurance filter has a nice texture coating and can still use cap wrench.

    • @Balticblue93
      @Balticblue93 Před 11 měsíci +3

      @@faxmen09 I was going to say that last portion. I have three filter removal tools. One is the metal I believe 74mm that hooks to a socket, I have a pair of filter wrench pliers and one strap style. I work on different vehicles, so I have a whole set of the metal attachments, but the Endurance filter was able to use the standard one I use for any other filter on one of my vehicles. I also run a larger length filter that is about 1.5" but same circumference and thread pitch for more filtration media. But on my vehicles with the grip coating, with a glove on, I can spin it off without the filter wrench. That sometimes mean it was overtightened on install. You really shouldn't need to crank it off with a wrench, if you oiled the gasket well. It's not an aircraft, it just needs to be tight and sealed.

    Great video, thanks!! I've been searching for a video of the newer Ultras with the louvered center tube. We know this model went from wire backed full synthetic media to the cellulose/synthetic blend with no wire backing, wire backing not needed with the rigid cellulose layer. The louvered tube looks like a larger diameter than the older tube with holes, so the pleats are shorter & more sturdy. There were reports of media tearing after "cheapening" it, so I presume the larger center tube remedied that. For 7,000 miles, it didn't even have wavy pleats. These filters claim they're good for 20,000 miles, but I think 7,000 is pushing it, I'd keep it under 5,000 miles.

While Jamie's driving is stop and go, it's also vast majority at operating temps, easiest on oil. It's like the old taxi oil and filter tests. Folks mistakenly think those were toughest on oil. Not so. Short tripping, especially cold temps toughest. Jamie's type of driving, much tougher on brakes and tranny, than oil. Louvers a First Brands Champ Labs influence. One of these days I want to install an oil pressure gauge on the oil filter boss of the engine block (drill and tap). Usually oil pressure gauges plug in upside of the oil pump before it goes into the valvetrain, etc. But I want to see how much pressure there is as its entering the oil filter. Those by-passes are in the filter for people who dont change their oil forever. But you could use that pressure build-up to determine how dirty the filter gets over time.

      @Balticblue93 Před rokem +1

      Just remember, color of the oil has nothing to do with the quality of the oil additive, wear packages, and TBN. Diesel oils are black in a few minutes. Some oils like Royal Purple come dark out of the bottle. The only way to know if an oil needed to be changed sooner is by Oil analysis by Blackstone labs. I do agree for that year and mileage the owner should be using a High-mileage Extended Performance from Valvoline Extended Performance High-mileage, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (Jeep OEM fill), or one of the other major brands. But Walmart Supertech oil and Kirkland Costco oil are all made by Warran Oil company. They did not do very well in VIRGIN oil analysis in comparison to the other 15 oils it went up against and break down much faster than another brand off the shelf. For $10 bucks more you get all five of the top brand and top-level oils. Engines are far too expensive to not being using the best filter and oil for your vehicle. Many people believe in this scenario that oil should have been changed between 5000-6000 miles. But we would only know that with a report.

      Without a UOA impossible to say that. Even then, UOA only useful with trending many together to tell. Since her driving is at mostly all operating temps, this oci/fci might be ok. Using a good synthetic oil and a decent efficiency rated filter, OCI might be fine. I wouldn't be too concerned if my Renegade.

      @@faxmen09 100% agree with this fella. Basically, what I said, but he did the Reader's digest version. I am just long-winded. I would recommend a better Synthetic oil and filter from my personal experience. I service five vehicles and do oil analysis every other time or each time I try a different oil in a different engine. But if it was my Jeep, which I have a GC Overland that we test, and I run the best oils possible and have them tested. Those Mercedes engines and transmissions are actually quite easy on oils. The other Hemi eats through the oils faster. But ever vehicle, engine and driving style varies.

The Ultra oil filter, while not what it was in OG version, (two layer full synthetic wire backed media), still has a solid ISO efficiency rating. Hopefully First Brands can still be trusted on that one. "Perhaps" Jamie "might" consider shortening up the interval some, but I can't conclude what she did on this one, bad for the engine. Oh, Jamie's Renegade, 'basically' a Fiat.

It has the wire mesh and full Synthetic media. Once cut open then we learned that Champion labs makes them all and the only different is the labeling on the exterior.
      She would never know the oil condition with an OA as we both have stated. But for $10 more you can buy a far better oil that should be used, but I assume she doesn't do her own oil changes or have someone like a husband or someone to it, so it is what they put in at Walmart or Costco since they are the same oils from Warren oil company.

I do agree that the bottom models of Fram are not the best, but the Endurance is the best model, and the Ultra Synthetic is about the same as the Mobil1 filter. Their use wouldn't be legal to void a warranty and they would lose in court. There is nothing in the owner's manual that says you cannot use FRAM, or it will void your warranty. But any current day filter will filter just as good as the OEM filter. Many OEM filters are made by the same manufactures. There is no need to spread nonsense about voiding warranties because of a brand of oil filter being used. This isn't the 1970's anymore. The stigma of Fram being badly needs to go. The Endurance is about as good as they come. And WIX branded filters are made by Mann+Hummel a completely different manufacture that also does Purolator and Bosch.

    • @prevost8686
      @prevost8686 Před rokem

      Actually there was a period of time that Fram filters did void warranties and Fram are the cost of numerous small block Ford engines. I was a Ford technician back in the late 80s-early 90s and numerous 5.0 Ford engines were coming in knocking with no oil pressure. Every single one had Fram’s can of death on them. Ford issued a TSB instructing all dealers who had a 5.0, 5.8 knocking with low oil pressure and a Fram filter installed on it to remove the engine, do not drain the oil out of it, and don’t touch the Fram filter installed on it. The district service managers were inspecting the filters and it was clearly evident that the filters had collapsed and starved the engines from oil. It was an absolute nightmare for the owners who were stuck in the middle. When FoMoCo got involved Fram paid for a number of engines just at the dealership where I worked.
      Fram’s budget filters have always been garbage. Obviously their top shelf Ultra filters are better quality but I would not put one of their Orange Can of Death filters on anything. It amazes me that people will put a POS filter on the most expensive component in their vehicles. I can’t count how many times I have removed one and it’d be completely empty of oil because the ADBV was useless. Just because someone says “ I’ve run cheap Fram filters for years and never had a problem “ doesn’t mean they got their money’s worth or that the filter performed like it should. It’s not like much better quality filters are super expensive. I’d say on average a customer can pay $1 more for a better quality filter.
