    That film brought back memories! I have only walked in the Goyt area once or twice, and Shining Tor just once - all many years ago. But when you reached Windgather that really rang a bell. I don't remember it, but I think we must have climbed there once. I noticed the heather was looking really colourful there - it seems to be man especially good year for it everywhere. Lovely holiday, then back to the reality of British weather. Thanks Chris.

      Hello Michael. Yes, my companion mention Windgather and nearby as a popular climbing area. I agree, the heather has been magnificent, as has the wimberry crop.

    You should develop a geology app for numpties like me, so I can learn more when I'm out. 😂
    Shame about the clough. One day you'll find you are a landowner, but please allow us serfs to access it? 😊
    Thanks again, Paul

    Great to see you out with des Chris. It's always a treat to get together with like thinkers. Ha, the the woodlands it seems are better than the Cloughs there. That's something on your way up I suppose. A wind and wet one up there - both had to retreat into your tents, which probably wasn't the plan - another time. You did have the daddy long legs for company though. Ha ha! Well, not a great nights sleep but a reasonable decent on that path. I agree love the name of that hill 'windgather.' All in all not as hoped but good finishing up at the church there. See you both out on another maybe. All the best. Mark

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  Před 11 měsíci +1

      How do Mark. It was good to finally meet up with Des. It had been in the offing a good while but as if often the case, trying to coincide a mutually convenient day isn't always easy. Still, we got there in the end.
      I've been a bit unlucky with the weather on camps of late and considering this is summer, it doesn't bode well for the months ahead.
      The daddy long legs have been a feature of a subsequent camp too, plus a particularly unpleasant incident with some of the worst midges I've encountered outside of Scotland. The bites I received were terrible. I suppose that is one good thing about autumn and winter, I shouldn't encounter any of those for a while.
      Bye for now, Chris

    More youtube gold Chris. Too many funny moments to comment on. Top probably was , "there is Jodrell bank, disappearing into the gloom " - just as Des appears from the gloom of his bivi. Well Chris,I Hope he wasn't !
    Seriously though, lots of great memories from my youth brought back on this one.
    One of which was a weekend staying in a blizzard at windgather cottage when I was in the scouts. All the pipes froze. At about 2 am I vomited about 2 pints of chicken supreme and blackcurrant jelly all over the dorm floor. But the scouts I lead have executed 2 am shenanigans many times so balance is restored.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  Před 11 měsíci +1

      How do Dave. I didn't realise you were familiar with this area, being a north-eastern chap, etc. Is Windgather Cottage still in existence as a scouting venue? Chicken Supreme and blackcurrant jell sounds like a winning combination 🙄😉.
      My last few camps have been a catalogue of bad weather, ticks and midges. I'm not a huge fan of autumn and winter but at least my next few camps should do away with the last two.
      Hope you are well mate. ATB, Chris

      How do Steve. I know.....bleedin' weather! I think you could be right re The Wrekin. I did some homework when I got back and it's either that or Brown Clee Hill. Saying that, the view indicator image I used reckoned you can see both the Malverns and Plynlimon also in good conditions, which I find doubtful if I'm honest. 🤔 I should go back in more autumnal conditions too. I reckon it would be great for fungi. 😎

    The Goyt Valley is a treasure. Go there when the Rhododendrons are blooming. Errwood Hall is quite sad. Why did they demolish it? The views along the Shining Tor ridge are lovely. It’s a shame there’s so few places to wild camp. You can camp a few hundred metres south west of the trig point on Burbage Edge on the other side of the valley near a shepherd’s shelter, which is one of the few places that is secluded away from paths. The whole area is worth exploring. You can park on Macclesfield Old Road in Buxton. The other area to explore is Combs Moss north of Buxton. ATB.

    • @ChrisJB
      @ChrisJB  Před 11 měsíci

      Yep, I was very taken with the area. It seems many of the rhododendrons are being removed as they are rather invasive. I think the aim is to replace with native species. I've been looking at Combs Moss on the map. Des is very familiar with it and it's definitely on the agenda. Best wishes, Chris

As for Clee Hill, I can quite believe it's visible from there. If you are ever down that way, it gives you a fantastic view of the Welsh borders and the Ludlow area.
