Need For Speed Carbon: Rubberbanding The AI (HD)

- ***The point of this video is to simulate the way an AI vehicle would maneuver when it is "catching-up." This was performed by using a super handling/acceleration modification.
Rubber Band AI is a hidden feature in racing games that allows computer-controlled players to catch up no matter how far back they are, artificially and unfairly 'balancing' gameplay. If you have ever played a racing game and thought you were so far ahead that none of the CPU players could possibly catch you, only to have them make up a fifteen-second gap in three seconds, then you have experienced Rubber Band AI. The term refers to the occurrence of AI-controlled racers suddenly accelerating faster than the character should be able to go, in order to close the distance between them and the player, as if a rubber band connected them and was pulling them back. - Hry
So THATS what 'Catch-Up On/Off' means in the race options
Yeah lmao big clue
Mind you. Turning it off makes it hard when you're behind
@@Busher50 Nice...

That one time AI rubberband works in your favor is when they went so fast that they plunge off the canyon when you overtake them.
Rarely, before even overtaking them.
This is, hands down, the best example of giving someone a taste of their own medicine
i swear this demonstration is exactly how the AI drives when they are behind you
great video! love the 350Z
exactly. in nfsmw (2005) during boss racing, Izzy was almost 1 km behind me, then I saw on the map she comes like crazy and her speed was like 300 km/h in 90 degree turn.
Yeah, AI and especially the bosses don't give a fuck about physics when they're behind. Earl shoots through the whole map when you have the lead for example...
someone shuld make a camlock on AI that is behind
@@zendraw3468 for real. I've seen them drive through the map just to catch up.
@@yusifh2504 Izzy : Wanna see some 90's dude?
In Carbon they went overboard with the catch-up: the AI won't stop the superspeed/handling behavior after they overtake you. It basically means you have to stay in No.1 from the very beginning of the race. In any Tier 3 race if you see an AI Corvette Z06 going full nitro from the beginning you are screwd since that car has OP acceleration which, combined with superhandling, could not be overtaken by any means. That's also why Darius is so hard to beat without using the Corvette instant overtake trick (ironically even driven by a player the Corvette is just as fast as a rubber banding AI).
SUN SU If you think carbons rubber banding is bad, you should take another look at NFS Underground 2, that game was so rubberbanding it was obvious, just play Street X, they don't even lose speed when they turn, they don't power slide (which slows you down a lot) and have infinite NOS all tuned to full power.
Same thing in Pro Street. It's really easy to create an over powered car the AI can't keep up with and sometime, you'll end up laping AI like on the oval track. And depending on the AI (Mostly noticable with racing team AI like Ryo's crew) they can get aggressive and try to take you out in a corner if you're in first place. That why rear view mirrors are important.
SUN SU
As far as I can tell, it was REALLY bad in NFS Rivals.
During a race, I would start to fall behind after crashing, and making mistakes.
After about a minute or 30 seconds of catching up to the AI from a very large distance, I would sometimes find them going what looked like under 50MPH on a straight section of road.
The Burnout games do have this Rubberband A.I. too
drive club has that too
Its amazing how it went 160 mph on *"Cutting"* corner, while real player struggling to even stay in the middle of the road, because the game somehow won't let you have a Good Cornering
Yeah Carbon is retarded like that. All the cars in that game handle like strollers on sand.
That moment when I'm about to finish a clean race, and then.......I get passed fro 500 mph M3. *Sigh*
rubber band ai=lazy devs not making capable AI
True
>forgetting that this game was released in 2006 and criticizing A.I.
^replying to three year old comment
same thing as hacking
Wow I just read your comment after typing out a short harry potter book novel of a comment above and another person gets it. You're right, it's all laziness. Makes me wonder if the map was premade using some kind of technology from google earth or apple maps and summarized it with some shit algorithm the military has been doing since the past decade. Hmmm.
This is nothing compared to Matt 's Honda S2000 in NFSU1.
And Brett's Mazda RX-7
Guys do you ever heard of nfs undercover on ps2?
@@JohnSmith-gd2ws i can fucking confirmed
@@JohnSmith-gd2ws caused me nightmares btw nfs undercover ps2 is away better than the PC

Great demonstration, this is really how AI cars look in the rearview mirror: infinite grip and acceleration
It is better visible in NFS MW 2005
He clearly points out in his description that "This was performed by using a super handling/acceleration modification."
So... the AI car basically turns into a Formula 1 that can handle bumpy roads.
And they are much faster than what you see in this vid
I love how the atmosphere/music changes when you're last.. :)
I always noticed this especially when using a fast car. This demonstrates perfectly how it works
0:54 the gearbox tho 💔
A good way to see how broken the rubber banding in the game is. If you enable drift physics, use an acceleration modifier (where its drivable), and have a scout as your current crewmember, and disable the crew charge so it they can go faster. You can can go as fast as 170 or 200 but they will always catchup and if you check the statistics after you finish the race and check your crewmembers top speed. They've always seem to reach 250mph. Also its almost impossible to be them on speedtrap btw.
So this is what those f*cking AIs do when I'm on the lead! Why would they even made a game if they'll just give us a hard time by cheating???
Apparently the player has cars that have too much weight in the back, while the AI has perfect control over the weight of their vehicle, a lot of times it feels like their way of cheating is by balancing their vehicle so much that it can handle sharp turns at ridiculous speeds. Makes me wonder if the cars the players get have been dumbed down on purpose to simulate an artificially induced difficulty by making the AI seem it's better. Obviously it's just a trick phoney, the AI isn't smarter, it's just a show off, exactly how the bosses are presented. They couldn't have showed it better any other way. The AI is basically showing off their fake skills while throwing tantrums or laughing maniacally on a screen and people wonder why has NFS Carbon been not as appreciated as Most Wanted. Even though the best game of the series is NFS Undercover, they nailed there perfectly fine the issues with the AI rubber banding or the cops spawning directly beside the player, MW had this issue of cops being all of a sudden very aggressive and appear out of nowhere.
@@redragongaming how I can do thes AI
How do they feel when they get passed by someone exceeding their top speed
Same thing as to how Akio’s rivals in wangan feel.
I wasn't sure what rubberbanding was until watching this video and I'm pretty sure I have experienced rubberbanding in NFSC before, but just either haven't noticed or was getting frustrated as to why I couldn't catch up😂
same here haha
Its quite satisfying and surreal seeing a car doing a hairpin at 160 mph

no
True racer….
In a game.
NFS Undercover ps2 has the most obvious ai rubberbanding
We don't even talk about underground 1 and the glitchy rubberbanding
It happens a lot in NFU2 5/6 laps done you’re all the time in 1 place, then suddenly at the last lap one random car will wait for the first little mistake you can have and will pass you without any chance of you to catch that car.
I always say that any race it’s easy till the last lap it’s where you need to have a lot of care.
Not on underground 2 opponents is easy to overtake in underground 2, but on underground 1 has the most crazy AI rubber bands same to most wanted and carbon
@@tri_pa_loski116 Even in Most Wanted 2005 as well
And that's why I hate circuit races.
@@tri_pa_loski116 Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2 is a nightmare because of the rubberbanding its built on the same engine as underground 1 both are nightmares because of the rubberbanding.

How to beat cheaters at their own game. Well done.

Waited till the camera gave a cool start up shot before the win. I kinda miss the menus and stat screens the old games had. Looks cleaner to me
Man this game so many memories ... Ford GT40 was my favorite car
This is truly a *certified hunter moment,* right here.

that street composed music was amazing
That song in the beginning brought back so much memories.

ONLY in NFS. Well, there maybe some other games like Split/Second and Blur but NFS is the king of Rubberband/Cheat A.I
Not only in NFS. All modern racers have this...

Was talking about underground 1’s rubberbanding to a friend the other day, my phone must’ve been listening 😂
You can be going 300 mph and the cops still find a way to get ahead
In freaking crown victorias Lol.
Nfs heat cops are relatable as fuck
The police are understandable. You have to outdrive them, not outrun them.
we used to chuckle at gran turismo 2 in its haydays. one could literally play all courses blindfolded and open the eyes on the last half on the last lap to win.
atleast you can just get nikki and rubberband with the other racers xD
That was some driving 🙌🏻
keep in mind, this was tuned down from underground 2 rubberbanding
That 350z looks very deadly
And It Is!

so the tables have turned ;) You know I realised that NFS World's Slingshot powerup is pretty much just a Rubberbanding power.
NFSU2 AI catch up is really pain in the ass
"My braiiiins... are going into my feeeeeet!!!"
"See how you like it."
Is it possible to disable the rubber banding coding via Hex Editing or something else?
Extra options can solve it to some extent. But then it feels the ai has virtually given up and so we end up alone.
Music is so relaxing
As a learning beginner indie game dev there is a reason why they do this dying repeatedly destroys tension so to keep the tension the speed of the object is slowed down depending on how far away you are from the object

Imagine doing it with a Lambo or Carrera GT as they could go 452 kmh lol
Always used to feel this pain in Need for Speed Most Wanted
Especially Speedtrap races.
Nah its more hurts in underground 1&2
How it feels to drive through a school zone after the first 3 beers
NOW I know what catch up means after all these years XD
How much grip?

So i was right when i thought their speed doesn't drop a single digit when they take turns.
Did you swap this thing with a Viper engine? What an acceleration!
Dude was familiar with terms like AI 9 years ago. Insane
You can't be serious lol
0:32 how that lambo doing burnout?
Who gets this from recommendation after 9 years??
Goddammit I miss this game
AI: hey, you cannot do that? Can he?
Bro can you tell me what the set up on this car is? The tuning as well
I only see it during race wars tbh, at the end a random car will come up and fly by you at the last second going at least 50 mph faster than you and take the win... Unless you've got the same power as the.
That car you were driving has some of the best handling I've ever seen, that 350Z has some serious grip on the road.
+xXD4TA_B0MBXx great job carefully reading the description
+iCEW0LF *face palm* Crap I didn't even read the description.
+iCEW0LF You know whats even more stupid? I didn't realize till now that this guy was using mods to demonstrate rubberbanding.
Revenge :D
That is why I think they are perfect....they dont loose speed at turns...that pass you easily on one minor mistake....I always wondered if I could upgrade my car I would get to the AI level(like those fast turns) but even after full upgrades the car still seemed shit in comparison to the AI cars...
can u race same rubberband ai or it will just remove it on restart even if ur opponents stay the same

I agree rubber banding is the only reason why racing games r interesting
Otherwise I don't really find joy in winning races without any kind of challenge or without much struggle
