Frasier - "It's only a chair" - S1E19 - John Mahoney

  • In remembrance of John Mahoney (1940-2018). The success of Frasier is not only due to its superb writing and intelligent humor, but developing the characters further by adding touches of serious drama, and also having actors with the talent to pull it off. From S1E19, "Give Him The Chair", this is among Mr. Mahoney's best monologues of the entire series.

I don’t know about nothing achieving that in modern sitcoms. The Good Place has quite a few episodes filled with great comedy and genuinely affecting and deep pathos. Same goes for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, like the episode where Rosa comes out to her parents or the episode where Terry is racially profiled and has to deal with that. Same goes for Parks & Recreation, like the episode where April offends Andy when she says she’d sleep with Jeff Mangum and then has to learn more about how to be supportive, or the one where Ron says he didn’t recognize anybody, or the one where Leslie gets impeached from City Council. That’s just my opinion, though.

@@calowenby1654I dont watch any of those you mentioned but what they're talking about might be more specifically multi camera sitcoms. The ones with the audience or laugh track. Most of those types of sitcoms today just suck. And even the single camera ones that are always overhyped don't do it as well as Frasier, Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, Sanford and Son, The Golden Girls etc.

He was superb. So subtle. The way he was shouting while walking into the kitchen with his back to the audience is so real - this is exactly what people do, but not every actor has the confidence to do it. Some feel the need to be front and centre. Not Mahoney. He's a legend.

Frasier could not see the emotional value of the chair although he is a psychiatrist. Because we can not look at our family members objectively. We carry a huge emotion bag that contains all past disappointments, fights etc. This emotion bag clouds our reason especially when we talk to our loved ones and family members. Perfect acting, writing. Even though John Mahoney had never married in real life, he understood and showed Martin's emotional profile so well. RIP.

I may have only graduated college 2 years ago, but I have a chair like this. 2 actually. One was a 16th birthday present from my parents. The other was bought at an estate sale in 2021 and is my first piece of furniture I bought with my own money. I love both, but the estate sale chair more so. It is the chair I saw my Carolina Hurricanes win some playoff games in. It is the chair I was sitting in the night I was on the phone with one of my best friends pouring my soul out to when I was going through a valley. It is the chair I was sitting in for some of my favorite memories in the 1st 2 years after college. It's always more than "just a chair." It's about the memories you have saved in between the cushions. I deeply love this show because of moments like this

It's scenes like this that make me question the need and idea of the new reboot Kelsey has scheduled for 2020. While I don't discount his abilities as an actor and director, it is the writing of this genius sitcom that would be hard to match.
Not to mention, the technology advancement we've had in the past 15 -16 years since the show ended.
When something has lasted long enough for syndication, why mess with it? Now that John is gone, Martin's character would have to be addressed, no doubt in the same fashion. Also, with the ensemble cast, (if the same group including David Hyde I) I have this feeling the focus would be weaving them in and out much like Fraiser did with his friends of Cheers days.

I kind of understand where Martin is coming from. I was with my first wife for 7 years. When we split up all I had to take with me were my clothes, some personal belongings, and a 13" TV. Nothing else in the house was mine including the house(it was her house to begin with). I carried that 13" TV with me everywhere I lived. Even when I met my current wife and analog TV's were pretty much useless, that TV was always with me. Even when we moved to live in 2 different states before moving back home. I finally threw that TV away a couple of years ago.

I always felt that both Fraiser and Niles never really realized how classy their father was and dignified. The crane boys spent all their lives trying to be fancy and high end and viewed thieir father as too brash or low brow. But the truth is Martin was damned high class, respectable and had a lot of self-esteem and dignity as well as being just as emotionally open. It is no doubt why their mother loved Martin so much,

She has this thing about her.. throwing away things no matter if was old or new.. if she thought was worth nothing .. it is gone!! Y'know, I never thought she valued anything (including relationships) until I saw her still keeping a pair of old-fashioned ceiling lighting shades (60's style) in the pantry!!! 😮 She told me she likes them!!! Striking!!
Well, you know how I felt about that. 😊 Nooo, I won't throw'em away.. cause I believe in value of things.

"Marty Crane" could be amused by his own hilarious "Dad" Jokes and then reach in and grab You absolutely by the heartstrings the very next moment. A great self styled TV Philosopher all His own in the class of "Arnold" or "Floyd Lawson!"😂😔🎤💈🧀🏈📺B.W.

I'm glad they rewrote Marty and turned him into the more pleasant we all know in later seasons. If he was a grump the whole time I woulda hated him lmfao
