- MS Paints and crew took a trip to Vapnartak 2022 at York Racecourse to meet up with independent traders, Patrons, fellow dweebs and some old friends. We're scoping out the best miniature retailers and manufacturers, but by no means the biggest ones. Here we shine a spotlight on some of the coolest independent miniature companies powering their way through COVID and delivering the best independent miniatures available.
MS Paints is dedicated to teaching quick, easy and disability friendly ways of making, painting and playing tabletop games. We gear every video to being useful, first and foremost, to hobbyists who have a harder time getting the results they want from their models and games.

Glad you enjoyed the Retro Attic Mancave review of Vapnartak 2022, always good for a fledgling CZcams channel to get a mention.
Will Bob a link to your video at the end when I get a chance bud, hopefully send some views your way!
Cheers, might see you at Hammerhead 2022 next month?
@@RetroAtticMancave I can try! I work weekends so it’s rare I’m free! Saaaaad
If you don't get to go, you can always watch my review 😉
Yay for Northumbrian Tin Soldier! Just round the corner from where I live in a really awesome newish shop, and a ln absolutely sound bloke!
Thank you, for your positivity!
Love the Northumbrian Tin appreciation. So many amazing sculpts out there not being seen. Cheers for shining a spotlight.
I WANT THEM AAAALLL!!!
Now I really want a gnome riding a frog
Great bumping into on the Colour Forge stand and having a bit of a chat.
Loved this video dude, super chill as always, lovely to see around the event as we couldn’t be there. Looking forward to seeing you work on the NTS stuff. They’re gorgeous sculpts, loved working with them
Haha mind reader “say you like his videos and leave, don’t bother him” 😂. Black scorpion are in my mind some of the best minis out there and at a very reasonable price. Picked some up sunday
Nice showcase video.
Just realised I was stood next to you at the Black Scorpion stand when you were checking out their stuff.
I'll be checking out some more of your videos :)
Haha, very small world in there. Let me know what you think of the other stuff.
Appreciate you showing off the other guys, especially in light of your recent videos.
Love these different kind of videos - especially ones that showcase some of the lesser known talent we've got around. More please!
I will where i can bud! cheers
The videos are great because you are genuine and the content is gimmick free, keep doing what you do!
Thanks! I’ll do my best
As always…badass! I feel like I’m relaxed and hobbying just by watching your vids.
I wish i was relaxed making them haha
Colour forge are now my go to primers. All round great product
Ego-wanky, love it! Keep doing what you’re doing Dave👍
Really nice video. Sounds like you had a good day. Look after yourself.
No matter to topic it is always a chill video. Great way to through my day.
I only got 2 speeds, hun. Slow and chill.
MC_Paints enabling my plastic addiction, lmao.
Love it, i found a bunch of manufactures i'll look into, especially black scorpion miniatures.
Many thanks.
Respect for supporting independent groups and getting word out about them!
Quality cat content! 10/10
Love these videos and the way u are like just talking to a mate 👍
I am a mate! Cheers!
Last time I was at the racecourse was when my band played Summer Ball for Uni of. Mad laffs.
Damn this is cool I wish there were trade shows like this in the states
Glad to see you had fun mate, and I e painted some Northumbria tin soldier and they are beautiful models
They are! I'll check your videos for some inspiration.
Great video as always Dave. I love the rather hobby friendly prices that the conventions bring as well, if you've only ever played GW this would be an eye opener. Even with travel, I spent under £70 and came away with 44 models and five paints.
It was really nice to spend 10 minutes chatting with you outside as well. Hopefully we'll see you at another one.
Hopefully so mate! If not, i'll see you there next year. Would be nice if we could all go for a beer afterward too. Or have a beer there!
@@MSPaints sounds good. I'm just going to assume there will be an MS Paints demo game on next year right?
So many great things to say about this video. I will endeavor to keep it succinct. First, Dave that you for continuing to be an inspiration. Keep doing it. Second, as far as primers go, all I hear about is Colour Forge. Still struggling to find it locally in the States but about to just suck it up and order internationally. And lastly, thank you for showcasing Indie and alternative models! I mostly do TTRPG instead of wargaming so having all these options really allow the imagination and creativity to flow. Keep killin it brother!
Ohhhh yeah, so many good options out there now. I didn’t even get to cover crooked dice! Their stuff is great too
Great vid! im off to a show this weekend.. cant wait
laughed out loud at the Dad gangster comment. Cheers!
I love how green the inside of your house is! Plants = happiness
I collect minis and old games, my partner collects plants. It's a happy balance. House is full of toys and plants!
Dude you make great videos. Awesome stuff
Just think of the fun a cat could have at a Wargames event; all those miniatures to be patted off the edge of so many tables.
Black Scorpion minis are tip-top; though, I do wish that he'd put some cloths on some of his women figs.
Thanks for another fun video.
So much destruction!
I basked in your aura outside…since then I’ve lost 40lbs and everyone now finds me attractive! You’ve got the Midas touch bro!! (Great vid as usual) x
Think that might be the passive radiation poisoning. Nice seeing you!
GOOD SHIT!!!
Super cool video! Diving into historicals and other manufactures at the moment, and really appreciate this type of content. Your filming is as gorgeous as ever, awesome :)
Great to see some of these smaller companies, a couple were new to me!
Nobody messes with your gangsta dad 😋 I love seeing new products like these, and it's so much easier to get a feel for it in-store!
My pa ain't playin'!
Love seeing shout outs to smaller companies! I wish there were more smaller scale events like this over here in the US, but they all seem to be bigger and it means smaller companies can't make it.
For companies to check out, I'll always say Meridian Miniatures is a great place to start, the Black Crab series he's been sculpting and dropping up on Kickstarter has just been so clean and fantastic with a heavy alternative fantasy vibe. Another company that is coming up, with their game and a crazy awesome set of minis, is Goblin King Games and the game Moonstone. They have some amazing minis that just blow me away all the time. I totally need to check out the places you highlighted here and hopefully throw them a few quid for some great sculpts to add to my mini collection.
Ssssssuperb video Dave. I always look forward to seeing your videos interesting and funny. Oh and there’s health and safety frog and cat chat too.
I picked up that crab at Salute! :D
Lovely relaxing video, glad to see Northumbrian Tin Soldier getting some love. I can see you being into their Time Bandits line!
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the MDF kits too
Great video dude, always love your style particularly the cinematography, best by far in the mini space 👍🏻
Tin soldier is my local store. I didnt realise they where so close and when i fiund out i made a bline to them.
Great shop, ace staff, cool minis
Those black scorpion minis look so crisp, I might have to pick up one or twenty
I picked up a colour forge Matt black primer the other day as my local hobby shop was out of army painters one and honestly I’m switching to them for primers now
Ach, I'd forgotten how much I love the Black Scorpion pirates miniatures. I might have to pick up a set at some point.
Absolutely love their minis glad to see them getting some press. You may also like burrows and badgers from Oathsworn miniatures.
Ooooh i know i will! I'm trying my hardest not to look at their stuff and behave myself.
@@MSPaints it's a slippery slope. It starts with a look and ends with an empty bank account!
I really wanted to make it to Vap this year, but sadly other committments. Great show. Maybe next year...
Good to see Warbases and Great Escape Games get some press. Love GEGs Dead Mans Hand cowboy range. Ordered some terrain from Warbases in 2020 and it crossed the globe and arrived sooner that expected. Went together like a treat as well. Helped flesh out my Wild West table with 0 hassle
Great video
Really good video. Thanks. As an rpg-player, I'm often on the lookout for good minis. I like the oldhammer style/old D&D style much.
I love Northumbrian Tin Soldier, i got the Gnome More Mr Nice Guy pack for a buddy of mine. Hoping I can make it to somewhere where you are in the future because I'd love to thank you for the excellent discord community, inspiring videos and yes swap stories about what adorable bastards felines are.
Cheers bud! Will always keep you guys posted if i go anywhere mini related!
This video was great! craaaaaab
I love Northumbrian Tin Soldier, I have a warband of some night folk painted up as Goblin city guard, they are full of fun and character fill that role very well!
Definitely going to come down to York and check this out next year 😁
I have all the Northumbrian Tin Soldier Cats of Crumptown set because I have reached that stage of my midlife crisis where having 4 enormous real cats is not enough and now I must own many small ones.
Hahaha, must admit I was tempted by the geese!
I missed a War of the World's table!!!! How is this even possible. I must now try to atone for this oversight. All seriousness though really good show, and am so glad it is back. Can't wait for next year
Good stuff.
Impulse bought all of Black Scorpions pirate dwarves and goblins thanks to you, loved the video!
Damn! Tell your bank account I’m sorry
@@MSPaints cheaper than buying old GW dwarf pirates, and I'd rather support the little guy anyways!
Will definitely pick up some of those Wild West minis!
Love that War of the Worlds game table. Excited you picked up some of those MDF kits, looking forward to seeing what you do to them.
As am I! Gonna put em together and see if and what I can do haha
YTube algorithm suggested you, and it was a winner.
Hope Northumbrian Tin Soldier will ship to the US.
They TEASE with the Weasel minis tho, cannot find them anywhere in their shop. Grrrr!
Drop them a message bud! They might be happy to cast one up for you!
Great video. I would LOVE to attend an event like this. So cool.
They're good fun! lots of great people there too.
@@MSPaints The people is at least half of the appeal. All of those like-minded people geeking out over all of that sweet wargaming.
I am peanut butter and jealous.
Black Scorpion minis are amazing. Chameleon rider for the win, going to try and get to York for the next one
class act sir
Cool video. Keep on keeping on man.
I shall! Thank you
I'll have to find you at a show.....I have 8 cats. Yes 8 haha
nice sweater, looks like Hector knows what to put on these cold days
Yeah, my mum knitted that for him!
Northumbrian Tin Soldier do amazing stuff! They have a small shop in sunny Newcastle where they sell things from other suppliers too. Well worth a visit.
Weirdly my company has an office directly above them. Small small world!
@@MSPaints Small world indeed! Your videos started popping up on my feed during lockdown and it took me a while to remember where I've seen your face.
You've served me a few times way back when in the time that was at a gaming shop which I won't mention the name of out of respect because I don't think you've ever mentioned it in a video.
Really glad to see you doing well, videos are great. Keep it up!
I did spot you at the Show Dave but there were 5 people around you and you were all chatting so didn't want to interrupt. I had a cracking 2 .5 hours there and spent alot lol
I think I saw you too!
I too have been looking at Black Scorpion miniatures for a few weeks now & they are gorgeous.
In Her Majesty's Name had a new book version recently released & I'm thinking of creating factions in 28mm using the Dishonored the video game art style as it's so beautiful-wish someone would create miniatures in this Victorianesque steampunk style 🤞
Black Scorpion is my current favorite indie company, I love high quality wild west sculpts and their fantasy stuff is great. I also like Hasslefree Miniatures despite their customer service being anything but.
Saw you!! And fanboi'd so hard I couldn't say hello. #facepalm. Oh well, maybe I'll get your autograph next year. ;-)
Frog is also available for photos!
I miss getting out to my local game shops on the regular. But honestly I'm generally so busy that I can't make it in to them much anymore. And that was before all of the various issues with shut downs and lock downs and whatever else that has happened with the big ugly C. But I soldier on from my finished basement. Getting various stuff ready for when I can either go back to the shops or get friends to drop in. Currently building two basic regiments for Turnip28. Also working on some basic terrain that could be used in several fantasy settings. Making some simple stacked stone walls right now. Stuff that looks like it was made from field stones long ago and is starting to tumble apart.
Was good to see you again dude, been too long. We were very happy with the turnout for this years Vapnartak and hoping next year will be bigger.
You guys should be proud. Well organised and felt pretty safe and spacious! Good selection of traders as well! See you soon!
@@MSPaints Cheers Dave, that's really good to hear. Next year will be bigger. I'm after getting different/newer traders in to get away from the crusty wargamers attitude.
@@GunwitchUK I like i like. I'll be there!
Colour Forge are made by my friend's FLGS in Sheffield, The Outpost.
Used to live in sheffield! noted, i'll pay him a visit.
@@MSPaints oh my bad sorry, for clarity I meant 'his' as in 'the one he plays at regularly', he doesn't own it unfortunately! Well worth a visit. Really well stocked with am sorts of mini, hobby and paint ranges.
Very nice video! Was that a war of the worlds miniature game that I saw? 🤔
Wasn't able to get there this year (International travel issues). Really cool show and I'll be re-watdhing this to pick up some tips. Who doesn't love Wild West stuff? Those 19th Cent sailors and the flat pack building also looked great. Good video thans to the frog and cat (is that a Pub?)
Pretty sure we have about 350 pubs in york, haha.
amazing - couldnt make it down but wish i had now. Any more of these types of events for indie games this year Dave?
Not overly sure! I think there's some in Newark i'll try to go to!
Northumbrian is awesome.
Gangsta dad ftw!
Good to see yu are still kicking about Dave, as I don't know what happened on the last reshuffle but a load of my channels were ditched, yours being one of them but we have reconnected I hope?
Gutted never saw you mate I only stayed about an hour! Was good though got a few bits I needed. The colour forge sprays are great! I've only got the black but I love it for my evil dudes. Glad you enjoyed it. Out of interest did you stay for all of it? Last couple of years they've had stalls later on for the public to sell their 2nd hand minis. Didn't have it this year while i was there.
Oh and that war of the world's board was amazing
Yeah stayed till the very end just to get everything done. Didn’t expect to hang and chat with so many cool cats.
Yeah. Black Scorpion, man. These minis ROCK.
And I love the fact that they're resin and I don't have to wash and scrub them before painting.
Seriously; those other manufacturers gotta get their shit together.
I don't wanna spend a fortune on things and then have to clean them before I can paint them. That's ridiculous.
Yeah, it's clean resin, not dirty. My hands don't feel filthy after holding them.
more such Vids Help independent Minis grow!
Well done mate. Thoroughly enjoyingyour stuff .. my cats are dickheaderesses.. Jedi and Sith. Maybe they will watch too. cheers from Oz :)
Undead cowboys IM SOLD
Man, it's been years since I was at a gaming convent, actually more like decades haha! But this got me pumped, so I will try to go to the next one that is close to me. I actually went for a Star Citizen event in England two years ago, but no real wargaming events for eons. I am handicapped, so it's important that I can rest every now and then, I cant stand up for longer periods, so I need to sit, but I guess there are chairs and shit on events as well :)
Now i'm not sure if you heard right, but I think this would be right up your street yeah, so get this, there's a gnome riding a frog inside
I enhoyed the genesis film
Great review. Do you have a link for those resin vehicles? My Google-fu is letting me down.
No wait. I got em. Kore with a K
Desperately checking my bank balance before checking out Northumbrian toy soldiers’ web site 😁
Real dangerous! But I think they’re pretty fair on prices!
You need see my family's cats Pie and Chips.
majorkill - shark daddy :P
Dude, watching this I just realised I used to game with your dad in the 90's, at least I reckon it's him. Did he used to be a regular at the Grimsby club until we both moved away?
Yeah that’s him. I recognise your name from when I used to snoop in his emails, hahaha. Seeing him tomorrow. Drop me your number over Facebook or insta and I’ll send him your way bud!
@@MSPaints Insta'd you. Ta!
Did you know there was a gnome riding a frog at that show?
Shane o mac show stealing cage dive. Lol
I didn't bother saying hello at the show as you looked quite tired climbing up the stairs that backpack and tripod looked as if they were wearing heavy as you just started up from the ground floor. So I thought it'd be unfair to pop over when gravity looked like it was out to prove a point.
Ironically you seemed have stop off every where I had masters to drop off.
The Extraordinary League of Kriegspeilers on the top floor are interesting people to talk to as they have an international membership and really are lot more nutty than they look.( I'm revamping their 28mm counters parts which was why I was there.) Next show your at have a word with Martin at Warbases, and Andy & Jon at Ainsty castings all can give you an insight into the shows. Personally I'm looking forward to Hammerhead as its likely to be a nearer to normal show plus it's one of the shows you find more small indie companies at.
That would have been the vintage lenses i didn't even use weighing me down. That's a nifty coincidence mate, i'm surprised we didn't bump into each other by accident. Hammerhead! Hopefully we'll clash there!
I'll keep an eye for you.It won't be as easy to find me at Hammerhead as they're no bar.( Ice-cream van has bottles) You may have actually walked past me .I'd let my hair grow out over the Pandemic then had it cut for charity. But my friends got to choose the style. So I'd have been the middle aged twit in the dark blue 3/4 length coat and a hair cut that was somewhere between the Norman conquest, and the Eastern Front. Framed by a pair of ears that maked me look like a wing nut trying out for Peaky Blinders.
I'd recommend caution with the Colour Forge matt varnish. I bought some at Partizan last year. It is exceptionally matt. However it's bloody temperamental. I did four test figure's Three 3D printed miniatures and an original resculpt so combination of procreate and white metal. The sculpt and one print were mounted figure's. Everything was chosen for texture and multiple techniques.
It really does such the shine out of everything including metallics.Leaving them almost mono toned. However I noticed some side effects one printed figure had the paint torn down to the printed surface by the varnish contracting . It also left the printed horse with the tip of the tail without paint at first I thought it had worn off in handling or maybe I hadn't cleaned the print carefully enough. However the metal horse had similar area's of unusual wear on the tail and metal war hammer.
I'd have put it down to a bad day. If I hadn't seen similar effects on figure's by another highly skilled painter ( he also experienced blistering in similar to water damaged furniture varnish. ) and an anecdotal acount of similar results from a pro painter. We all had bought the Marr varnish at Partizan. It could simply be a duff batch. It's not an issue of technique as we're all grown ups who've painted professionally on and off for nearly 30 years each. Nor is it environmental as we all live in different parts of the country.
Just recommend a test or two on something your happy to strip if need be.
The war of the worlds stuff, is that a game or just a stand alone kit? Either way I'd like to get some haha
Says he scratch built everything! I think he’s been expanding and building the tables for decades.
@@MSPaints Well damn. I am disappointed they looked awesome.
I never got my prince after kissing Hector.
He's always been the prince.
I would have a firstborn and sell said firstborn to have anything even close to this within a reasonable distance of me. :(
(reasonable being not needing to fly or drive 5+ hours)
