I love watching your videos. They’re great for myself but they do help me support my wife in different ways. She has recently been diagnosed with MS as well and your videos help me encourage her in ways a lot of the mainstream painters can’t (I’m the hobby painter, not her. But there is a lot of crossover with your advice). I love it and thank you for all of your content!
Glad it’s useful to you and your partner bud! I speak from a ‘caught it early’ position of privilege but if you both find something helpful in it, my work is done! 🐸❤️
Literally commenting and liking the vid in response to the folks who decided to unsubscribe because of the Gundam stuff. The hobby (wargaming and miniature building/sculpting/painting) covers more than just Games Workshop's franchises. Sometimes stepping out of GW's shadow allows hobbyists to learn new skills and experience exciting new universes. I love the wide variety of topics your channel covers, Dave, keep up the good work!
I had no idea folks unsubscribed because of that.
I don’t understand why different models is such a big deal (despite most of my experience being GW).
Co-Signed! I enjoyed the Gundam stuff!
People really did that? Lol
I’m all about model IP diversity! Loved the Star Wars stuff. Love all the new and old Warhammer stuff. Love all the AOS stuff. Love the LOTR stuff. Loved the Terminator stuff. And I absolutely LOVED the Gunpla video! Please don’t stop doing Gunpla videos if you’re enjoying building Gunpla.
People can be a**holes, they could just skip the one video...
Your gunpla video actually made me go and buy a couple of kits. They're pretty satisfying to build honestly.
Hell yeah. Even their HG kits are quite good these days.
Usually when I see these hobby block videos I just skip them and think to myself “Just go do something else until you are not blocked anymore. It’s just a hobby”. But, since it was you Dave, I gave it a shot just to support the channel. I’m glad we agree 😉…and yes, to join my voice to the others, more Gunpla please! Kudos on the wholesale content you always deliver Dave!
Real shame about people being upset with the Gundam content. I for one, am very happy with whatever content you decide to make. Personally I am just starting my 40k journey and have been building Gundams for about 2 years, so I don't understand the hate towards them. To each their own I guess. Thanks MSP!
Dude, your content is always great because you don’t follow the flavor of the week that other channels follow. It’s just more about the hobby because you love it and you’re always honest.
I was just trying to write a long winded gushing comment, but you already nailed it.
I've got an entire closet of unpainted minis. The idea of priming a bunch and putting them on a shelf to paint whenever I feel like it is a brilliant idea. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend!
Your Gunpla video actually inspired me to buy a kit and give it a try, then I bought 3 more locally, then I found a Gunpla website and ordered another one. Sheesh, like I needed another branch of this hobby. Ignore the haters, I think it's great you cover other areas like Gunpla, old LOTR box sets, Terminator minis, etc. Keep it up, it's why I'm a Patreon and will happily continue to support the great work you are doing.
I like all the hobby topics covered here, even gundam. Keep up the great work.
I have a hobby - not the same hobby as you - and your comments about your hobby easily wash over to my hobby, and I appreciate it.
Sir. Sir. We can’t just grace over that amazing 98 Baldur’s Gate cameo. That is deep hit in the feels box.
shame your not going to do more Gunpla videos. maybe make a second Gunpla channel?
You need to pay Tony more for his ad reads. Your promo bits are the hands down best on CZcams - I was genuinely amused by him talking about getting more fibre in your diet!
For me, one of the most important parts of getting over a hobby block is to be willing to admit when you're feeling it and actually letting it happen. The block tends to have alot of negative connotation to it and as a result, we tend to see it as something to be overcome or prevented outright, alot of the tricks we come up with being used for such or to simply make working during a block more barable. Sometimes however ,the line between staying productive during low-interest periods and trying to force yourself to be excited about your hobby can become a thin line that can in worst cases actually kill the hobby entirely. Learning to recognise when it's time to step away from that hobby just so you can rekindle your interest is very important.
the serendipity of your post is very much appreciated. i was feeling pretty down, hobby block included-- and once again your positive encouragement lifts my spirits. thank you again. Tell Hector Hello, please.
I binged all your videos the past few days and now a new one drops this fast, perfect timing. I fucking love this channel. I love the humor, production values, all the awesome hobby info, and just about everything else. Fantastic stuff!!
Here here Viking dude!
My pile of shame for unopened Gundam boxes is far greater than my warhammer pile lol. Love Gundam, love the channel, will be subbing patreon after the holidays. Hope to see more great content from one of the best in the biz, mspaints
And if you ever find the Linkin Park Gundam box, PLEASE do a build and paint video 😊
This was just the video I needed to see. I've been stuck in a cycle of painting-stripping-repainting-restripping because nothing I do seems good enough.
The "just hobby for yourself" suggestion made me look at last night's efforts and realise they are good enough
Absolutely! If you enjoy the painting, you succeeded!
These were all great ideas! Really appreciate the video.
I’ve recently started a hobby “support group” which has helped not only me but our local tabletop community - we meet everything Thursday evening in the local community space (that was kind enough to let us use the space free of charge) and first Thursday of the month is games night where we have a dozen or so tables set up where people can bring tabletop games and play and we have a fairly large kill tram community now so we have seven to nine kill zones set up now each week and we play the games we love for 3-4 hours. Following Thursdays are “therapy” nights where people come and build and paint all while having an open chat based on 1-3 topics presented by the people in the group. We’ve had such success that we’ve been able to apply for local community program funding which means starting in January we will be able to start buying things like paints, brushes, building materials for scratch building terrain, etc. for those attending without relying on people bringing / sharing their hobby stuff. Just having dedicated time each week has been such a boon to keeping myself unblocked in the hobby.
This is very cool
As is the case most of the time, you are bang on with those tips Dave. I have been 'hobbying' for well over 50 years, and have experienced multiple times the HBS! (Hobby Block Syndrome), and one or more of those tips have helped. My 2p's worth: when your hobby seems to have become a chore, stop, think and re-evaluate your situation. Don't put yourself under tight constraints and deadlines, it will just turn into another job with its associated pressures. Thanks Dave for all your contributions to our hobby. 😉
WHAT? There better be more Gunpla on this channel! Screw any wanker that actually said they would unsubscribe.
I love that you share things, I also love the Gunpla stuff. I have one to build I have a second one I may keep for myself that I had bought for my nephew for Christmas, can always buy him something else lol
I enjoyed your Gundam video, so much so that I've now picked up my first Gundam kit. Don't know anything about Gundam besides they're large robots in space, but I'm looking forward to building it!
I've not got much to add here except your channel and demeanor are fantastic, you come across as genuine and I love lurking in the discord. Well worth the sub imo. Thanks dude.
More Gundam please! :D More of what you love, no matter what that is, just keep beeing you and enjoy mate. Forget about the small minded smegheads who's whining about your creativity, they clearly does not apriciate YOU.
Cheers!
If there isn't more Gundam content, I think I'll unsubscribe........ ;)
I tell ya, having a ton of primed minis is a game changer. I love being able to just look around my shelves, grab a thing, and go.
great video. The advice to get stuff primed is absolutely great. Removing barriers to getting stuff done is by far the best way to actually do it.
Another killer vid fella!! Now to add to your Gunpla back log... Because why not 🤣
I think most of us hyave been there. For my 2 cents, I've found having deadlines can work both ways. It can sometimes get me out of a rut and get me stuck in. Taking the first step is sometimes the hardest and a deadline can get me past that stage. But sometimes a deadline can suck the fun out of a project too. Like, if I get inspired to work on something completely different mid-project, but I don't have the time to do that until I've finished the current one...
Do what you enjoy. That's my motto. It reflects in my hobby and my channel. When something stops being fun I move on or take a break all together. As I always say, it's a hobby. It's bonus content for your life. Also, gundam video was awesome. Big loves 🤘😎🔥
Point 3 is my whole life :) Got to find your own way to make sense of things and remove the noise and stress of life. Point 5 is something I've been doing for the last few months - the moment something is built, I prime it and slam it on the WIP shelf, so it's there whenever I need it. Cheers Dave!
I assembled and primed all my remaining models last summer. It helped a lot :) I just pick a model or unit and can start painting.
Less than two minutes in and I find myself realising that i let CZcams and such all but destroyed my love of my hobby. Thanks for saying what i needed to hear.
Why on earth would people give you crap over gundam? It's part of the hobby too. I was pleasantly surprised at that video personally.
A great video as ever. If I were to add one tip: When you think you are almost done - finish the base.
Then, any changes to the model must be minor and seeing how all comes together is clearer.
I need to follow this to get things done.
Just chiming in that I'm a huge Gunpla fan and I think that's fantastic meditative activity. Love it, support your effort, and would gladly subscribe and follow a series with that focus.
That Hulk Hogan NUMBER ONE! *SLAPS!* clip always makes me smile.
Hopefully you don’t get bored of me using it haha
Your gunpla vid was so good that I’ve added one to my Christmas list for Santa. Take my sub!
#5 made me LOL. I love priming models with my airbrush. It’s so satisfying to put a load of models out and batch prime through them. It makes the model pop with a zenithal base coat allows me to see truly what’s underneath and interesting that I could do. Great video!
Been doing that priming thing myself recently with the Leagues of Votann stuff I got. Been assembling them in my lunch hour at work or when my little one is having a nap in the car I park up and start clipping stuff off sprues. Once he's in bed get out the rattle cans and head to the garage.
Excellent tips as usual.
I very much appreciate the humility in the comments about not knowing what is going on in other folks lives and how to help them.
Your cat's little snout is adorable. Gosh!
Yeah, having a whole varied lot of primed models ready to go is like having a shelf of unread books at your disposal.
Having a set of already built and primed models helped me with doing more painting. I also think that skirmish games with low model counts help to overcome hobby block. Skirmish games let you try out lots of options and encouraging painting something that you may not want to paint on a large scale. I may not want to paint a whole army, but certainly would give a squad a try.
Number 3 hit home.. I am on some new headache meds and from my MS making me sleepy and now the medicine I am just wipe!.. I look at my crafting room and I just don't have the energy to paint... I want to but I just can not because I am so worn out.
The miniature hobby has never and should never be just the GW hobby.
Just been coming out of a hobby block myself just need to enjoy it bugger the goals find rad model paint rad model continue !
I always go back to this video when Im struggling. Thank you.
I and my nine-year-old son loved that Gunpla video, and it inspired us to get one and build it together (although in the finest traditions of the hobby, instead we got two, and one still sits waiting to be built). But why on earth anyone would unsubscribe for the occasional video on something outside their wheelhouse is beyond me. Because doing something different doesn't need to apply only to your own miniatures, and seeing someone else branch out can inspire you to try it out yourself if you like the look of it... and funnily enough is probably the reason the vast majority of us got into painting miniatures in the first place.
Glad you and your lad both got a kit to do together! I can't think of a better series of things to do with a young'un. The lack of glues and dangerous tools makes it an ideal shared project!
@@MSPaints Very true, and no small thing considering that he's yet to accept the idea that "more is usually not better" when it comes to model glue. Frankly the only real (albeit minor) drawback is that because the thing is so poseable that the temptation to try and use it as an action figure is very real... but I'm getting better about that. 😉
Disappointing that you got grief for the gunpla vid, I enjoyed it and it motivated me to purchase a model. I hope the negative comments haven't deterred you from making the content you want to make.
I really enjoy these 'bigger picture' videos that remind us of that this is a hobby and we are on our own personal journey and should enjoy it. Keep up the good work.
Great video! I find having many different hobbies means at any day I just switch to one of the others. When I don’t feel like building models, I’ll build some aquariums or ride my motorcycle. Overtime I find I get better at each slowly. I find that works for me. Keep up the great work!
Been struggling with this for a few weeks, thanks for the kick in the arse! Watched this then went stiaght up to my workstation and reassembled the army I stripped a few months back and haven't been arsed to start painting, did more in the last 3 hours than I have in months. Ta.
Absolute machine, Dan! Nicely done!
Some quality points well made
The lighting in your videos is next level amazing.
I find for me the best way to get over hobby block is to look over your models. I don't play warhammer I just collect and paint so that's how I enjoy the models.
On the flip side if that sometimes I'll sit down to paint and get stuff done but end up just looking at them and realise I've been sat there for an hour just looking.
Either way I've enjoyed the hobby so it's a win.
These days, my hobby is watching hobby videos. Nothing wrong with hobbying vicariously.
Awww I loved that gunpla vid. Made me want to pick one up
Not been a sub to the channel long, however have really enjoyed the straight forward, down to earth personality and attitude, not just with the channel content, more importantly with your delightful self.
The Gundam video's were a lovely trip down memory lane from vastly younger year's.
So yes, continue to be your ever lovely, genuine self, keep on with cracking out some great vids and rock some tunes.
All the best, love.
WillowTC
Another great video, also screw those threatening to leave, they ain’t real fans
Respectfully, warhammer stuff ain’t the most appealing part of the channel for me, it’s the presentation and editing and passion, I’d love more Gundam stuff but it’s your channel, keep it up pal
Going through hobby burnout right now and am going to paint some battletech minis today to try and push through it!
Thank you for another interesting video. I am in a hobby slump and this video helps a bit.
I just found your channel on this video and i gotta say it was very helpful, i struggle with creative block in this hobby all the time. And i have so much to go prime now lol
at least to me it do not matter what you do on you chanel as long as i learn something new that can help me be better at the hobby, so to me most of what you put out is gold. hope you have a good day!!
I actually bought 5 gundam kits because of that video and I am grateful to have been introduced to them so thanks man I probably would never have given them a look but realy enjoyed something a bit different 👍🏼👍🏼
Sounds like we went the same route. 'Never done this before! But i'll take 5!' Glad to hear you're enjoying them bud!
Cool t shirt. One of my favourite games. Sadly underrated.
Don't let the haters intimidate you, the Gunpla is more powerful!!! LOL, but seriously, that made me drag out some of my Gundams and prep them for painting and select an Gundam big boy to get myself for Christmas! Love all the work and positivity you put into the videos, keep movin and shakin!
Having primed models is a personal favorite for me. I just have a shelf of stuff ready to go. I went from "I'm restless and could paint something" to "well, I guess Yndrasta is finished now" a few days ago.
Great video. Some good points. Love the positive theme and general positive down to earth feel of your vids. Who cares whether it's gunpa or whatever. Keep doing you mate
i absolutely loved your gundam video and i've ordered a kit myself, so i wouldnt mind more gunpla content
I have a lot of anxienty painting my minis because I never feel happy jsut for myself. So since I dont have anybody to play with, I usually say "well why bother in the first place". but the moment I have a group projrect im like 120% engaged and put in way too much effort.
Now I learned the slapchop technique and I hope this will be a new kickstart because I really think it looks great even with the low effort you invest.
Seriously glad I stumbled upon your channel a couple of months back, it's great to see someone enjoying the hobby no matter what game system/ model you are talking about. Keep up the great work 👍.
I dont have any plans of getting into Gundam at the moment but I enjoyed that video
Another great vid, bud. Thanks for the positivity and realism. Bless up
Your Gundam video inspired me to go acquire my first kit. They're a real blast to put together!
Lots of great ideas and thoughts. I’ve gotten in a bit over my head and are a bit overwhelmed. I’ve decided to commit 30 min a day to doing something in the hobby. So I can get small victories and continue to move forward with my projects.
I primed a whole bunch of stuff to do this winter, living in Ohio, USA, I have a bunch of stuff I can do. It’s all different too: vehicles, minis, terrain, etc. enough to get me through the icy winters. Then, if I have a clear day, I’ll make sure to have something else ready for me to prime.
Another great video, it’s easy to be all consumed by a hobby and more so when you have a backlog of things to do and a non stop torrent of new shiny things keeps coming your way.
Some great points there.
You missed the part where a health and safety frog with a gun can be a very powerful motivating factor 😂
As for the gundams, I saw that big daddy gundam you had waiting to go - even if it’s a Patreon exclusive - let’s goooooo ❤
Yeyeyeeeee that perfect grade is getting wheeled out one day!
Great video, I think you were pretty spot on with the points imo and work on avoiding that trap of a hobby becomes a task, its meant to be fun :) Also about the Gundum thing, I had no issues with that, it was interesting seeing a cheap modelling range for model hobbying that you could still use with say Wiley Games did a Mecha combat rulesset recently. Anyway, you keep making these, I'll keep watching, thumbs up and all that :)
I needed this today. Thanks brother.
No problem, brother!
Gundam is not my thing still a very interesting thought provoking video also nice seeing kit models that flow more easily instead of looking through 4 sprues looking for 1 bit. As you have talked about before some people only want GW vids its a shame as the hobby has so much to offer.
That priming stuff tip is spot on 👍
I found purchasing a bottle of brush on primer really helped with my hobby block! Now I can just pick up a handful of minis to paint instead of worrying about setting up a primer production line! Also I usually mess up the spray primer so then I have to go through the process of stripping the minis too!
A warm water on rattle can! Brilliant!
As someone who recently moved to Stoke - can confirm this
I mean, it’s gotta be tempting to double down on the gundam now 😂 I liked the video - kits looked cool and they are basically tau - or rather tau are basically gundam
I NEVER comment on CZcams videos but I had to comment on this one because of the fact that people disliked your gundam video so much. First off, Gunpla = Freedom so you are free to enjoy making gundams and other people are free to not watch that video. Second, I was ESTATIC when I saw you were making a gundam video so I'm probably part of the silent majority that got drowned out by the vocal minority in regards to how that was recieved. Third, it's a wonderful hobby that's affordable, doesn't require lots of expensive tools, and is relaxing and has no timetable. For poor people like me who are dealing with a lot of stress it's kinda perfect. I know it's easy for people on the outside to say "let the complainers unsubscribe if they don't like it" because youtube channels need all the subscribers they can get but I for one am not going anywhere, especially if you make Gundam videos in the future. Take care and go enjoy your next Gundam kit, I know I will be soon.
Gundams are such a good break from GW stuff. You should do more gundam stuff fuck the haters
Mate, started using that streaky grime like you suggested. Went with the dark and it's bang on with that method of drying and taking it off with white spirit and cotton buds. So thanks mate! Greatly appreciated!
I haven‘t bit the bullet on a gunpla kit, but one day I will. So put me absolutely in column „More gunpla videos, please and thank you“.
Genuinely love your videos, they never fail to entertain and inform in a really great way, sounds a lil wonky written down but hey ho you get me drift
great video Dave, my T shirts arrived today , great items
Wicked! Glad they arrived safe and sound!
Awesome advice.
This is legit helpful. Thank you.
Tip #5 might be exactly what I needed.
If you have hobby block, or lack of motivation, I recommend a distal bicep tendon rupture. That's what I did, and 3 months after my surgery, I am really enjoying all my painting projects!
This one really struck a chord. Sometimes I'll go weeks doing nothing but biuld, a painting spree, a gaming spree, then back to building. The only piece of solid advice I think might be missing, is if vice versa - you burnout on models, switch to scenery, and vice versa. has both helpe me up production, whilst at the same time stopped the irrational guilt of being sat with a heap of nearly-there projects that just won't click mentally as fun to finish
Very helpful, practical advise. Thankyou, sir!
Great advice. Thank you for the content
Always primed and ready. For sure.
