  • On the latest episode of Patriot Act, Hasan discusses Internet inequality in the U.S. and the reasons why millions of Americans cannot get online in 2019. Even though the Internet is considered a basic human right by the UN, many poor and rural communities across the country are still left with little to no access to broadband networks. This lack of Internet access then further impacts the ability of these communities to obtain healthcare, education, and other important necessities. While Internet service providers like Comcast and Charter are largely to blame for Internet inequality in parts of the country, the FCC is making things worse by siding with private corporations at the expense of millions of Americans who lack access to what has become a vital tool for everyday life.
Since so many Americans lack access to streaming platforms like Netflix, we decided to put out a DVD version of this episode that can be rented at dvd.com/patriotact. Just don’t forget to mail it back when you are done with it.

What baffles me is that the greed goes so far that it actively and severely hampers the product/service being sold. When companies refuse to offer service - and even stomp on other people trying to offer an essential service - because it is more profitable for them that way, then something is very wrong indeed.

About the dead husband thing, this is for a lot of companies. When my dad passed away, my poor mom had to call the insurance companies several times to get them to remove my dad's name from the bills. However, if things continue to go the way they are i.e - increasingly burgeoning restrictions over what to say, write, wear, eat, worship, whom to associate with and whom to sleep with; then moving forward, it'll become exponentially difficult and cringe-worthy to toot our own horn regarding how free as a society we set out to be and the spectacular way in which we've decided to let ourselves get turned around.

I work in the I.T. sector and yes all of this is true, look up "dark fiber" or "black fiber" which are stands of fiber buried near or by the streets, and there are complete trunks of cables that are dead,
ISP have ZERO incentive to bring internet to rural areas or remote areas because there more users they have, they need higher bandwidth and their equipment dates back to lake 2000's they have ZERO incentive to update or upgrade the nodes at the CO's or to connect extra fibers from the dark trunks, plus building this infrastructure will skyrocket the cost of each household that has internet.

Pretty much correct. They do not want to expend the extra effort to put service in the middle of nowhere. The service will never pay for itself with so few customers, the ISP will need to have a tech within reasonable distance in order to work on the device(es), there would have to be a whole mess of extra transport equipment to get the connection to extend out that far...all for a handful of customers. They’re not gonna do it. Essentially, the ISP would lose money on the venture, so without strong government incentive, they won’t do it.

I have Greenlight, and I get Gigabit Internet for $75 a month through my leasing office (I think my parents pay twice as much for about 50 Mb/s with Verizon). It used to be $100/month for gigabit, but a couple of years ago, they upgraded everybody on the 50Mb/s tier to the 100 Mb/s tier at no extra charge because they actually improve their infrastructure, and all the other tiers became cheaper. They even offer a two gigabit tier that my router wouldn't even be able to support. Back in March, when we all had to start working from home for the COVID-19 pandemic, they upgraded everybody's upload speeds at no extra charge. Whenever I hear nightmare stories about Comcast, I'm grateful for companies like Greenlight.

    "they face virtually no competition"
Yup. My city was lucky enough to be a Google Fiber city. 6 months after the announcement and 1/3 of the way through the rollout, local cable company had suddenly been able to double their speeds and halve their rates.
    Weird how that works.
(they now alternate between bundles, fine print, scare tactics that Google is "going to cut you off!", and occasional increments in service/cost)
(not saying Fiber is good or bad, only that it's competition that didn't want to collude)

It is the same with a certain ISP in the UK what you said at 5:18
I was horrified when I had to advise a customer to provide proof of death of her 88 year old husband. She was in tears.
Fortunately she was speaking to me and I resolved all of her issues with her other home utilities providers. That's my good deed of 2015.

How is it weird for an ISP to ask for a certificate of death? I worked for a phone carrier, we did the same thing. People will try anything to get out of a contract, companies have to treat you based on how the shittiest people treat the company or they will get scammed all the time. We all have to take our shoes off at the airport because 1 fucknut tried to smuggle a butter knife onto a plane, thanks fucknut.

My house got intermittent internet, legit would have internet then 5 mins later no wifi then 10 mins later internet rinse and repeat 24/7. We had spectrum come out and service us 7 times they replaced the equipment 4 times. I do appreciate that we at least had the service techs come out. It's still not fixed it's been 3 years
