  • Richard Dreyfuss plays The Writer, who tells the story of his childhood adventure to find a dead body alongside his three friends. A heartwarming, poignant tale about friendship and appreciating the people in our lives. They won't always be there as time passes.

When Chris is walking away and you hear what is fate is and he just disappears is eerily beautiful.

I love how even if you were brought up 30 years later you can still relate to these boys. I grew up in the 80's a continent away in a small village but we were also surrounded by woods, hills, valley's, ravines and rail tracks and would explore and look for adventure every chance we got, we loved video games but they were for rainy days only. I hope today's generation of parents let their kids explore with their friends but the way the world is now I think a lot of parents are too scared

I wouldn’t generalize the world like that. In my country, every kid is outside and exploring. It is rare when a kid stays inside and plays video games even on rainy days. Everyday no matter the weather, you can see lots of kids playing outside in my country. Some kids don’t get home until dark and no parents worry. Parents only start worrying if they haven’t heard from their kid in a few days. Sorry if my English isn’t very good.

Powerful performances by some incredible child actors, made even more moving when you know some of their real-life backstories. The eventual young death of River, Corey's abuse from industry professionals, and Wil's life with an emotionally manipulative mother and abusive father. Like Wil stated in a recent interview, the core of his character was his line about his father hating him, and that was something he knew all too truthfully. You combine these talented kids with King's storytelling and Reiner's directing, and you get lightening in a bottle. What a classic.

The story was set in Castle Rock, Maine; Castle Rock was site of many King stories, but the film used Oregon for some reason.
I remember a mailbox made of heavy-gauge steel advertised as "bat-shattering."

I had a life like Gordie LaChance in small town Aiea of the 1950's. The town square was a quarter mile down the hill, and we'd go on overnight Boy Scout camp outs along the Halawa stream. My older sister was the 45 RPM-spinning Teen, but the soundtrack is very familiar to me. I looked for the soundtrack CD, but found it was incomplete. So I checked every song listed in the credits and went down to an indie comics/video/record store to find 1950's music collections to assemble a complete custom music CD. Director Rob Reiner assembled his cast and had them interact before filming started; It is ironic that the actors' reel lives mirrored their real lives. Over the years, watching River Phoenix slowly disappear at the end of the movie has become more poignant due to his sudden death from a drug overdose.

Thank you both for a lovely reaction. Although my perspective when I watched it as a youngster has changed as I've gotten older, it's one of my favourite films. The acting I feel is fantastic, especially the Chris/Gordy milk money scene.

    Nope, Corey Feldman.
Yup, Jerry O'Connell, first officer of the USS Cerritos on Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Wil Wheaton, former pilot of the USS Enterprise-D on Star Trek: The Next Generation and a Traveler on Star Trek: Picard! The dad was in Starship Troopers and Total Recall, and the mom was the mom in Gremlins and Footloose. The brother, John Cusack, was in Sixteen Candles with his sister Joan, but is best remembered for Say Anything. . . with Ione Skye and John Mahoney.
You should see Kiefer Sutherland in A Time To Kill, and River Phoenix as Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade.
Please react to Richard Dreyfuss in his Oscar-winning performance in The Goodbye Girl, in Steven Spielberg's Always, his Oscar-nominated turn in Mr. Holland's Opus, as the lead in Whose Life Is It, Anyway?, co-lead in What About Bob? and in The American President directed by Stand By Me's director, Rob Reiner.

Don't forget you were seeing his parents through his eyes, so maybe the parents just haven't helped him as much as they should have since the wreck. Been a long time since I read the story, though, so maybe they are really total jerks.

      @Deathbird_Mitch Před rokem +2

It's all his perspective anyway. But I wouldn't call them Jerks after Denny's death. Losing your child is tough, a little depressed detachment is to be expected.

Might be the most impressive child acting I’ve ever seen. No way they could make these scenes so powerful unless they’ve truly experienced and understood the emotions they are conveying.
Idk how they all built up an emotional knowledge base so extensive by age 12, but it’s completely incredible to me. Reading absolute genius dialogue helps too I guessxz

On a side note, isn't it unbelievable how many unforgettable movies were directed by Rob Reiner, a.k.a. "meathead" from All In the Family? The Princess Bride, Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery, When Harry Met Sally...

I love you two's reactions! Son and mother covering so many years. I'm closer to your mom's age. Not sure but think she is just a little younger than my mom and dad, who are still alive thankfully. I graduated in 1985 from the same school my mom and dad did in 1965. I also had a pre-conceived label from my dad's crazy high school life, so the 4 teachers I had that they also had, already labeled me before I even spoke.
But the joke was on them because I didnt give a sh1t what people thought of me and I got swats and detentions for standing up for myself by verbally responding with sarcastic and cruel insults. They came to hate me more than my dad, and I am proud of that. lol. Fck them. My hometown knows of me widely as a free spirit and someone who puts two cents into any BS I call out on them. I had friends on the police fore who were my friends (4-6 years older) and I knew that unless I committed a felony (which I would never do--well stupid sh1t anyway lol--I did some "dealing" but only to my close friends for fun times--not for profit--I gave away a lot too as a friends and they returned the favors.). My stuff was on the down-low, but people knew what we were doing, but since we harmed no one, it just stayed knowledge, not big rumors.
    Keep up great reactions!

19:42 Actually, pulling or yanking leeches off your skin is a really bad idea. Because you can actually pull their teeth out. And if those teeth remain in your skin, then you can end up with a dangerous infection. Two proper ways to get a leech off is to either use your fingertip to gently slide them off, or you can wait until the leeches are so filled up that they will actually let themselves go.

@18:34 Deer aren’t very bright. I’ve had them walk up to me in my yard thinking I was inanimate and then freaking out when I move. I’ve also stopped moving while they can see me and after staring for a solid two minutes at me it then looked around confused and went back to eating my yard….and I tiptoed away.

Not to mention that, if one of them gets hit by a car, the rest in the group will still run across the road instead of stay in the woods. Never hit one, but I have come close more times than I would like. I live in a state with really high deer density. Approximately 20,000 are killed each year by cars.
