6 Signs You Might Have Impostor Syndrome

- Impostor syndrome, or “impostor phenomenon,” is a term that was first used in 1978 by psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes to describe why many high-achieving people felt like impostors in their respective fields. Do you often feel like a fraud or an imposter? Learning about impostor syndrome can help put a name to feelings of phoniness and give people struggling with it reassurance that they are not the only ones experiencing these feelings. So, here are a few signs you might be experiencing imposter syndrome.

I just feel like everyone’s lying to me-
They say I’m doing good or doing great, but I always just think they’re sugarcoating everything. I’ve reached the point where I feel like I just want people to tell me how horrible I am just so I know they aren’t lying
This is so me. No good things reach to me because I know they're lying to me. Nothing helps when I make tiniest of mistakes. I take the guilt so much. I also feel everyone knows something about me that is embarrassing and they drop hints by their sarcasm. I feel scared of getting exposed and I don't know what I did wrong!

Same here!
Nah that know I'm 1 IQ Point Away From Being A Carrot!
YES 👏🏼 I feel this so much. I’ve always been known as the smart kid by my peers and friends but the people in my family were always smarter than me and also I have like, little to no common sense at times. I’m scared of the day when my friends come to me for advice but I genuinely don’t know what to say and I’d either have to come up with something on the spot or just tell them “I don’t know. I can’t help you”
I’ve always been someone where I feel like if I’m not giving them practical advice to actually better there situations I am not o help and I’m nothing but a burden. Like, unless my friends communicate that they just want me to listen, I will try and give advice. Like honestly I feel imposter syndrome in almost all core aspects of my life.
So sorry for rambling I’m having a bit of a eureka moment now that I actually have a name for what I’ve been feeling for like 3 years :w:’’

It really sucks to hear that since I won’t be able to get therapy till next year, it’s been like four months and I still am not able to get it since the insurance-part is a difficult and unbelievably long process, and that’s not going into the factor of if my mom can afford a really good therapist either :(
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that you and your mom will find an good therapist very soon ❤
i hope it’ll get better ! i showed all signs ;w;
i suggest doing a bunch of research!! learn as much as possible about imposter syndrome. as someone with an official diagnosis, self-diagnosing is 100% valid if you put a ton of research into it
you don’t need to be officially diagnosed to study/understand concepts like this! as long as you have peace of mind with what you think you have and you’re educated on it self diagnosis is okay. it only extends to being toxic when people publicly claim to have something they weren’t diagnosed with. i’m never gonna see a therapist due to #beingpoor and a lack of therapy places anyway, you have something to look forward to! remember to be grateful even though it’s shit
I am still in line and I have already waited 2.5 years

Edit: that is a golden thumbnail
I do that last one A LOT. Im art classes I always look at others' drawings and feel like they are much better than me and that I have no talent in drawing. Another thing is.. At the past, I had barely one friend and now I have finally a group of friends. But whenever a friend of mine tells me about their friends that aren't in our group of friends I always think "how many friends do they have" "Do they have more than me?" "Am I just a loner again?" "How many friends do I have? 5.. But I rarely hang out with them after school. They hang out all the time" "They have much more than me" and blah blah. When my friend tells me I'm good at drawing I never believe them cause I compare myself to other much more talented people than me. And it sucks..
Sorry for bad English btw 😅
I n the past, I was in a group of 3 friends. One left, and moved away, so it was only 2 people left. We were good friends, but we couldn't do much with two people. He finally went to another group, and I was left alome. This went on for months until I finally went to a bunch of groups to make friends. It wasn't fulfilling though, and I felt like I had to be the funniest person in the groups, and be in all of them at the same time. Finally, I couldn't take it and say alone for one month, then I decided to be good friends with only one group to put my energy into. I still feel lonely, even though they are great friends. I always feel like I'm not being good enough in the group and that I need to be nicer. I'm a social introvert an d hsp, so it's very hard for me to stay social, but I try. My point is it's ok to not be the one with the most friends, and it's ok if you aren't always feeling up to it and need to be the best of the best, because that's what friends are for; the people you can let your guard down to, the people who are fine with you being yourself. I hope this helped you, or at least someone, and have a nice day.
Honestly... same here. Except I start to wonder if they think that friend is better and if they will eventually choose them over me. I'm not a funny person (at least it seems that way because people usually just overlook my jokes), I hardly have any relatable hobbies to share. Everyone seems to follow these trends or have a large number of experiences and there's just the simple old me.
Your English is really good.

It gets ridiculous sometimes when i'm comparing myself to people with years of experience more than me and then i begin to feel so inadequate and undeserving of what i've achieved.
I think this is the psych 2 go video that has most hit home
2 Years late but after these passed 5 Years I realized how bad this can make me feel. I Teach Drumline, Coach, Make Projects, and Compete in Powerlifting and all those things bring out all those signs mentioned in the video. I feel like it got worse over the years as projects and goals become bigger, but talking about it does help 💪
Brace yourselves if your going to read this...
As much as I’d like to think of this as just a Among Us reference and based video (and I love it), what terrifies me is that after I watched this, I realize how I really am and what I might have. Oh, and I know the things aren’t in order, but the numbers are the signs.
1) In a way I relate, I don’t think I deserve to live a happy and fortunate life. Sometimes I wish I could trade lives with someone who has never had certain luxury’s I have ( maybe have disabilities ) and gone through so much pain, physical, social or mental; whatever it is. They could finally be free from pain they thought will last forever, be able to have all their senses and not be afraid to do things they couldn’t have before. Make friends and live a normal ( well not exactly normal in these times ) but soon have a hopefully fun and happy school life.
2) I’m becoming a perfectionist by the second of the new year and putting so much more work into assignments then I’m supposed to ( more then just my hardest effort ), procrastinating when I can’t get things done and have terrible anxiety, going to sleep late, which is very abnormal for me.
3) I’ve even been scared the moment someone finds out I’m not as smart or don’t know as much as I seem, and theirs nothing but jokes behind my glasses ( yeah, I wear glasses). Lots of times I feel like I’m just a fraud in all my Extended classes sometimes, no matter how many times I raise my hand or answer questions in deliberate manners.
4) Usually I’m okay with getting a few questions wrong or making a minor mistake, and understand deeply that I can’t be good at everything, but now I’m replaying my stupid accidents over and over that no one would make. I feel like I’m just a fraud in all my Extended classes sometimes, no matter how many times I raise my hand or answer questions. Always having a truck load of negativity on me and self-doubt.
5) This goes with four too, but yes I do feel as I have to be the best and not because someone told me too. I try to do it so I can be up their with the geniuses and overly talented people, maybe just my siblings. I think I’m over doing it.
6) Then I’m comparing myself everyday to a strait A-Honor Student (my older sister) who even does everything around the house and my younger brother whose been solving Rubik’s cubes and coding since Seven years old ( still in elementary.) I love my family so much but I just think I’m a grumpy, mediocre middle child ( not to any other middle child out their or anyone else bc y’all amazing ❤️).
It’s my first year of Middle School, of Sixth Grade. So why did I just realize I’ve been feeling this way? I don’t think it’s what I actually think, but it kind of hurts.
Thank you so much Psych2Go, I’ve been watching you for 2 years now, you help me understand what is happening to me and why I feel certain ways. And thank you fellow viewer for reading this rant about me.
Hi
oh no, I have imposter syndrome
hey, you should try speaking to someone about this. it sounds like you're really struggling and this is negatively impacting your life and mental wellbeing. i promise you do deserve good things. you don't have to 'earn' it.
as a disabled person myself (i'm autistic and probably disabled by a few other things too), i read your first point and have some thoughts. disabled people aren't to be pitied. our lives aren't all miserable. majority of us aren't in pain 24/7. we can still do things - yeah, maybe not everything an abled/neurotypical person can and with a few modifications - but we can still have friends, jobs, relationships, be happy, have fun, and do well in school. i don't deny that we have struggles and hardships that come from inaccessible societies, but we can still lead relatively 'normal' lives.
forgive me if i misunderstood and i sincerely hope this does not sound rude, i am not saying that you yourself are mean or rude. just offering my thoughts from the perspective of someone who is disabled, as you mention people with disabilities in your first point.
maybe i'm misreading it.
i seriously hope you find happiness soon, and trust me, you 100% deserve it.
@@ToffeeCookieKittyKat yes I agree with the what you just said, I haven't been diagnosed but I probably have at least ADHD and autism, (and I've done my good deal of research including research from people with ADHD and autism) and also probably have social anxiety and or anxiety. but im not gonna self diagnose and tell people I 100% have these things, im just highly suspecting I do. but what you said, I do agree with. yea, I do do things I don't want to/ didn't meant to do sometimes, take along time to finish things, etc. but all in all disorders and disabilities DO effect your life, but not always in a bad way.
@@randomstuffs3060 agreed, thank you for sharing! i hope you can get an assessment or professional diagnosis someday if that's something you're interested in, but i 100% understand the barriers to diagnosis. you're valid with or without a diagnosis!

When I’m playing among us... sometimes I feel that, I’m not like everyone else. That I don’t fit in.
Wow... I feel like all the signs were aimed at me. Every. Single. One. I didn’t realize how much imposter syndrome has put me down(among covid and other things) in the past few months. Thank you for this video, now I know what I gotta work on.
Please dont self diagnose. Go ask a professional to have 100% real answers
I was like... “what”-
My first immediate thought was "is this april 1st??? Did a whole year pass already??" And i was panicking for a full 15 seconds. I feel so dumb
@@urdadsleftasshole69 omg yes I thought it was March yesterday 😭😭😭
"where"
How many signs did you resonate with?
@@Psych2go alarmingly enough, every single one of them. I'm not a hypochondriac or anything but I always check these videos out of fear lol and the smallest thing makes me worried
"Do you procrastinate until the last minute OR put more time and effort into a project than necessary?"
*YES*
You hit the nail on the head.
_me expecting to be some joke signs_
me after watching it :
_"Maybe im the impostor"_
I like how they didn't waste the opportunity to make an Among us joke while talking about mental health, stuff like this and more is why i like this channel so much
4 and 5 are the ones that I have.
At school I'm a pretty good student, I've gotten the highest honor 2 times in a row, because of that pressure started building up, my parents kept telling me these words "you're the top 1 many people are expecting from you, many people are trying to be better than you" these gave me alot of anxiety during tests, I kept re-checking my answer and I would kept thinking I would fail and disappoint my family. At contests I start to shiver and mumble, I would watch the other contestants answer and feel like i'm nothing.
Sorry for this, I know I'm not the only one with problems, but I just feel comfortable here on Psych2Go.
Stay safe.
I’m a perfectionist AND a procrastinator which usually ends up in a mental breakdown the night before something is due because it’s not perfect, and I don’t have anymore time to work on it.
I am afraid of being exposed as fake. Every thinks I’m a try hard who is super smart, but honestly, I just rely on my memory and luck.
I do fear failure, one time I had a panic attack in class because I forgot my homework at my house. I had to go home sick because no one knew what was wrong with me.
I need to bet the best, again, the perfectionist thing where it all needs to be perfect.
I always compare myself to others. When I finally think I’m good at something (not often) and I’m proud of it, all I can think is “but they’re so much better.”
I swear I SAW red vent, he moved and after the emergency, he's always stayed away from the herd, he clearly killed and vented in front of us, he was lying easily and everything. He was right in front of us and he did the admin card task for one minute.
Red: I dunno blue kinda sus.
Blue was not the imposter
Your sus 😂
_Yeeaah_
I swear everyone around me vents
I saw u vent tho
Yeah you're kinda *s u s*
U sus

I literally just discovered this term today and now have been researching ways to reduce and minimize it within me. I'm a very successful software executive but I still struggle mightily with lower self confidence despite great achievements and success which can manifest itself at work and makes it hard for me to achieve, "Gravitas" which is required of Sr. Executives. (I often repeat myself on business calls and come across less confidently, when clearly I'm quite competent.)
I know understand the causes which come from childhood traumas which I certainly had.
Thank you, liked and subscribed.
this kind of hits hard...I didnt realize but a lot of the symptoms are things I do everyday...and it does make me feel like my success is not because of myself, or im not good enough just because someone else got a higher score
Wait wait a minute you mean to tell me IVE BEEN SUS THE WHOLE TIME!!
Uh oh! How many signs described you?

That last one hit me hard. As a Twitter artist who also sometimes draw VTuber fanart, I see many others through scrolling and see that not only have they liked and retweeted it, they also say great things about their art (art style, composition). I felt inferior because of such.
I feel like that sometimes, I have done some big thing and helped and improved the lives of people. And I think to myself I have done nothing and feel like a failure. I am happy for my friends who will be direct by commanding me to heed my achievements!
Purple: I didn’t deserve the opportunity to kill those bodies

Hope you find this video helpful :)
When I watched this video, I just screamed to myself: finally, I know something is wrong with me. I thoroughly relate to every single point in this video.
the fact that i relate to this so much, and i cant even talk about it with anyone
