Anyone watching this video, don’t ever have your hands so close to the fairlead when you are winching in, even when there’s no load like those first few wraps. If your glove was to get snagged in the line or in between the line and the fairlead it’ll pull your hand in a second. Please stay 3 to 4 feet back when spooling any kind of winch line. It’s also better to handle line handover hand rather than having it slide through. This is from the days of wire rope with birds that could cut you open. While certainly less of an issue with synthetic rope, there still could be a thorn or stick or something in that line which grabs you and handover hand works. Thanks!
When you thread the rope thru the spool, there should be enough pulled through to knot under the first wrap of the spool and pull across the drum. The bolt is not a good anchor and that steel head will definitely cause wear on the rope.
Was thinking the same, don’t like that bolt head, thinking of pulling about eight inches of the rope (8 in drum) through that hole using the set screw that was already in there but threading the end of the rope through the other side of the rope which will lock the rope in the hole, then laying the end of the rope across the drum, , taping it down with gorilla tape , and wrapping the rope around that end, should hold tight with tension on the wraps
Good color choice in the winch line. Looks evenly wound. I agree that you want some tension as you spool the line in, doesn't have to be crazy tight but enough to keep it in place 👍
If anyone’s was super stuck like mine and your hand won’t do the trick: Attach it to a tree or another vehicle. Go out as far as you can under tension then hit out. Might have to do this a few times.
I'm new in the trucking business. One of my 13-Tons Mercedes trucks got stuck in sand near the River bed loading sands for construction. For three days, I had no idea what equipment I should use to retrieve them. After days of online research, I've yet to decide which of the competitive Brands may be good for retrieving trucks in the rainforest, sans and muddy terrain - WARN, SMITTYBILT, XRC Gen 3 Winch and unknown others that can pull 25,000 or more if money is not a problem?
Why couldn't you just use that bolt to go through the eye on the winch rope? Seems sketchier with the bolt onto the rope like that. But I suppose friction from spooling should prevent too much stress on it.
It wouldn't have worked like that, its a set screw not a bolt. Anyways your correct that it just is needed to start the line, the line holds onto the drum with the loops around it.
@@SnailTrail4x4 Why not just put the set screw back if you just put a bolt back and pressed it down? if you were worried about it being pointed a few seconds with a file will solve that.
I’ve heard you shouldn’t use synthetic on winches with internal brakes because of the heat buildup inside the winch drum. Have you had any issues or heard of anything like that?
Why would a roller fairlead not be ideal as compared to dragging the rope over a smooth surface? Seems like the coefficient of drag would be much less with the roller. What am I not getting???
Many like Bill Burkes and others have suggested running rollers with synthetic. I have considered doing the same. I have not do so though. I see the reasoning behind it.
@@johngillette463 Yes that is possible. The likelihood is pretty low. It also depends on the roller fairleads. Robert Pepper and Bill Burke’s are big advocates of roller over hawse.
@@Switchback_Outdoor_Safety I also think that synthetic can be more dangerous than most people think. But that's based on seeing ships and tugs breaking both types.Like any tool you need to know what you are doing.

Should have used a button head bolt to eliminate sharp corners that hex bolts have. Otherwise, very helpful

Why wouldn't you just bolt it on now that your not using allen wrench bolt and a washer if needed?
I have the same question
Or just put the grub screw back in after cutting the tip off?

Wouldn't you want a red one?
SnailTrail4x4 I need some contrast 😂 not everything can be red

Attach it to a tree or another vehicle.
Go out as far as you can under tension then hit out.
Might have to do this a few times.
My Pierce winch drum is exactly like that, might use your method or tape the drum and tie a knot in the rope around the drum
Next time electric tape around the rope then cut then light on fire or you can use heat shrink tubing if you have it that size.
Those are great suggestions
I love the factory cutout in the grill for the winch engagement handle... I've heard that's a $eriou$ upgrade !!
Good video. It was helpful.
Glad it helped

Warn is maybe #1, then all the rest are great
Pierce winch are the best

I had the same question. Given the fact that you replaced the set screw with a bolt, why not bolt the factory rope end to the spool with it?

You might not need to winch that much if you’d get a set of tires! I can see the air inside of them!😳😳😆
We have winches to winch to pull jeeps out. 😁
@@SnailTrail4x4 Ya right
Why not just bolt the rope with the adapter already on the rope? Kinda used a backwards way like it was steel 😂
My winch cable on my fourwheeler has tangled on the edge and wont do anything do I need a new one or can it be fixed
Can it be unwound?
@@SnailTrail4x4 new account: Sam here. I lit the winch on fire and quickly dipped it in ice water, this expanded the winch and i got out the rope 👍
Why not use the grub screw,?
I've never hear of that screw before, mill have to check it out
What was the thread pitch and size?
I have the same winch , How much synthetic rope will the bad land 9000 hold ?
That all depends on the thickness of the rope. But it should hold 35' or less
I’ve heard you shouldn’t use synthetic on winches with internal brakes because of the heat buildup inside the winch drum. Have you had any issues or heard of anything like that?
I've never hear that. If that was the case I'd rather have the internal brakes.
Your synthetic rope thickness pls tell
why is tension important?
That's totally different than what the instructions say that came with the rope I used.
Did either work?
I thought you would just get rid of the Allen bolt ,and put a regular bolt to hold the rope through the end it came with?
This. why cut the rope and just have it "pinched" by a bolt is crazy
@@trumpsextratesticle8590 I always leave a couple of feet on the spool .Before I winch.
Did you really run a hawse fairlead with cable?
Yes, you can absolutely run a Hawse fairlead with a steel cable.
It's probably a steel hawse fairlead and not aluminum.
Why would a roller fairlead not be ideal as compared to dragging the rope over a smooth surface? Seems like the coefficient of drag would be much less with the roller. What am I not getting???
They both work. Just make sure to put a new one on, you don't want the burs to cut your rope
