  • This is the new Dacia Duster. With the entry model edition coming in at only £10,000, it’s pretty much the cheapest SUV on the market today. But at such a low price, is this deal too good to be true? Watch our latest in-depth review to see what Mat made of this budget SUV!

      Being way overly dramatic there. Had ours over a year and it has done plenty of miles - nothing has fallen off, everything works, and it has had zero mechanical problems, so your issues aren't exactly representative.
      As far as safety equipment, it has windows, airbags, and good brakes and frankly that's all you need. Granted it doesn't have active stability control and radar cruise control and lane departure warning, but that nonsense just serves to further encourage lazy driving and not paying attention to the road.

    Carwow makes money by taking a cut from dealers discounting cars, i guess there is little or no profit in the UK from this brand hence the poor review

  • @weedmastersr
    @weedmastersr Před 6 lety +1255

    With all due respect, this review is really biased and unfair. I think it might have to do with the fact that CarWow makes money by offering car discounts and can't recommend this car because no great discount can be offered on it.
    First of all, the Duster is an OFF-ROAD oriented car. As all such cars, it means it won't be extremely refined, well appointed or good to drive on road, similarly to real off-road oriented Suzuki Jimnys, old Land Rovers, old Jeeps and other such vehicles. It comes with the territory. Of course you're going to have woolly steering feel and limited grip with the higher profile off-road oriented tires of the Duster compared to other "SUVs" that have ridiculous low profile tires that can barely drive over a gravel road. Sure, the Duster might not be the best car in the world off-road either, but it's pretty damn good, especially for the money.
    Secondly, the comparison with the Kadjar is unfair. The Kadjar is a crossover shit with huge overhangs that would be crap off-road compared to the Duster. The Kadjar doesn't have the same capability. They're different cars that serve different needs and for different purposes.
    Thirdly, you have to look at the target audience of these vehicles. These are workhorses for farmers, forest rangers, hunters/fishers, outdoors-people, etc. They don't need a posh, soft car. They need a vehicle that can get the job done. One that goes nearly everywhere and you don't spend every minute worried about getting it slightly damaged and spending a fortune to get it fixed. Where I live, the Duster is in the driveway of almost every hard-working mountain man.
    Lastly, not everyone wants the needlessly complicated, tech burdened, gimmick suffocated modern car. Some would love a simpler, cheaper car. That's the market that the Duster serves and looking at the absolutely booming sales numbers, there are a lot of people that want that. Dacia is selling tens of thousands of units every months in Europe alone. Hundreds of thousands a year and millions over the lifespan of one generation. There are many people that want a car in which you don't need a week to learn its electronic features, that doesn't cost a fortune to buy and repair (you can spend that money on more important things like family), that doesn't have an unreliable turbo gasoline engine, that will last longer, etc.
    The way some British reviewers generally behave around cheaper cars is appalling. They all act like it hurts their bottom to sit in anything below a Ranger Rover when in reality a modern car like the Duster is more refined than the vast majority of cars sold merely one or two decades ago. Not everyone wants or needs the overly cluttered, isolated, tech filled modern car. Modern cars are too expensive anyway and the Duster doesn't make you a debt slave. If you took a second to realize that, you would've made a better review.
    Not to mention that if you looked at the Duster for its real purpose, hard work off-road, you'd understand why it is the way it is and why it's not more flawed than a Suzuki Jimny, a Jeep or anything similar.

    Rant all you want Mat, but this car's sales speak for them selves. And frankly I prefer this over the Kadjar. Reanult might be more posh, but this Duster is:
    - rugged, tough
    - better looking (looks like it can actaully go offroad, not a school runner)
    - cool name
    - cheap interior? Mat, this is for families. Let's get real here. Kids drop food all over the place, dogs have dirty paws and old people farts are wet. You don't want expensive interior for that money.
    - slow engine, yet economic. Buying a car is one thing, but keeping it running is more important.
    And to be honest, this is a perfect car for a guy with a family, who goes amateur offroading on the weekend. Scrathing it won't make you cry. Repairing it won't make you bankrupt.

    In India , we have the previous generation being sold as Renault Duster ,
    However here 95 % of the dusters sold are run by diesel , 1.5 dci . The rest 5% are run by petrol.
    When launched , it created a new segment of it's own and was a straight away success ,
    Facelifts kept on coming ,
    The strong point for duster to have a fan base in India ,
    1) Excellent ride quality .
    ( There's no other vehicle in same price range to provide the same comfort as it does. )
    2) AWD , it's again the only vehicle to provide all wheel drive ( there's no vehicle in same segment in the Same price range to offer that )
    3) independent suspension at the rear , adding extra comfort in the AWD version .
    4) and yeah it gives decent fuel economy , say around 15 kms per litre of diesel ,
    5) its a vehicle with auto transmission AMT providing ESP and traction control along with ABS AND EBD ( again when compared to same segment cars and price range , )
    Accepted that the quality of interiors are not to the standard levels , one can find cost cutting at many places ,
    When buying a car , in general it ticks most of the boxes , , so we love it .
    This is just my opinion , not to contradict with any one , .

    This car has options for back, front and sides camera (I do not have that on my Tiguan…). You can get it with automatic transmission, cruise control, 4wd, automatic climate control, electric windows and it looks decent. This is a great budget car that fully specced goes to 18-19k euros.

    How can you complain about woolly steering when you're testing a version with 4x4 high profile tyres? Bigger wheels in Prestige version steers way better. Kadjar is more expensive, has no road clearance at all with it's humongous overhang in the front. Yes, it has more soft plastics inside, but somehow it all rattles and it is not really any more silent at speed. To be honest, I have never touched a dashboard plastics or tried it's softness while driving, but most of cars have hard plastics in places below dashboard, where they are actually touched more often.

      Kind of true, but still you want a reviewer that mentions those things. I prefer reviews (user reviews especially) that focus on the negatives.. If I either don't have a need for the features that let those people down or don't care that much how good those particular features are then I know I'll enjoy the product anyway. But how silly would it be to spend most of my low budget on a product that is supposedly good value for money only to find out it has flaws that are a dealbreaker or really annoying to me personally?
      Where the review is biased is that it doesn't list more qualities (considering the price/class range) and focuses too much on the negatives.

    The question is do you need more car then that?! How does the shiny infotainment of the premium brands helps you find the way better for instance? Do you need expensive gizmo's like pedestrian protection or it is enough to keep attention on the road? I'm wondering how did I survive over 20 years on the road, driving without blind spot assist, pedestrian protection and all that crap without hit somebody or kill myself?!
    It is simple, fair car, cheep for maintenance and quite reliable as well...

    • @tomasribeiro8020
      @tomasribeiro8020 Před 6 lety +2

      Benzinio well why don't we just buy a horse instead? It worked fine for thousands of years... If technology moves forward we should try to enjoy it instead of saying that we don't need it all. Pedestrian detection should be mandatory in any new car in 2018 as it can save lives! Btw I don't think you know how annoying and frustrating a laggy and cheap infotainment system can be.

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB Před 6 lety +10

      90% of the time your daily route is absolutely the same and you don't need infotainment at all - for the rest of the time you just need a docking center for your mobile phone which I bet has the same functionality, which is cheaper and way way eco friendlier.
      And it is proven fact that (the American insurance association made a research) all those electronic gizmo's made your driving behaviour worst and you way more dangerous on the road.
      Instead checking e-mails, chatting or posting on social media if you put attention on the road there will be no need of such shit - the car would be lighter, nimble and more pleasant to drive and also way way more economical - but people are just a lazy idiots especially the yang generation!

    • @tomasribeiro8020
      @tomasribeiro8020 Před 6 lety +3

      Benzinio, just because you don't want or need an infotainment system it doesn't mean other people don't use it. Cars are getting safer with the help of technology so it's stupid to say that we should take all of those gadgets out of there. If you don't pay attention to the road because of your infotainment system it's because you're a bad driver. It's not the cars fault.

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB Před 6 lety +6

      It is all about the money! Al this brings billions to the car manufacturers. But we should get back to the basic and made cars way more simple! The only reason to need blind spot assist is because you don't pay attention to the road behind. The only reason to need pedestrian detection is because you don't pay attention to the road ahead. And the only reason to lost attention to the road is the infotainment - get it out of the car and you can get out the other too.
      That saves money, that saves weight and that makes the car environmentally friendly. I'm not against the technology - I'm against unnecessary one. And just because it is not a car's fault - you should make the car idiot proof - and idiot proof cars is the simple one - the you get in just to drive - either for pleasure, either for moving from A to B.

      @tomasribeiro8020 Před 6 lety +2

      This is not pointless technology! It makes life easier! It helps us and keeps us safer. We don't want it, fine, go and buy a Ford model T. It has all the things you need. But don't force on the general public like if technology was killing people.

    Hmm. I bought a new Duster in February 2016, it now has 65,000 km on the clock.
    It has the hard plastics, it has the ‘slow’ media/satnavv, it has the cruise control button in a different place to the speed setting on the steering wheel.
    The car has been, and is, brilliant, much better than it should be.
    In my time with this car the only item that’s needed attention is 1 headlight bulb...and I was able to buy that for less than €5 and replace it myself - took 3 minutes.
    None of that cheap plastic squeaks or rattles - and the roads are poor where I live - fuel economy is excellent, it cruises well in 6th gear and the sat nav is reliable.
    Other than that 1 bulb the car has been faultless.
    That’s more than can be said for my neighbours 1 year old Mercedes SUV: an expensive car, lovely to be in and a real impression of ‘perceived quality’ - soft plastics, doors that clunk shut. Not reliable though.
    And as for a friends VW Tiguan? Just the same.
    And way more expensive. Nice cars but not as good as people think.
    Duster? Yup, a cheap, budget car that’s great to live with.

    I like Mat and his reviews (quite sure ive seen all the Carwow reviews, several even multiple times), but I think that if you drive luxury vehicles all the time you start to expect a certain standard and lose perspective.
    This is obviously a car for people that don't have it too broad financially and/or don't give to much of a shit about it luxury. Where "a couple of grand" isnt a shrug, but a major financial impact.
    So it's a bit .. strange, to fault a cheap car for being cheap. And in my opinion (sidenote), Carwow should do things a slightly bit different then the rest (CarBuyer, Whatcar, etc), simply because the only difference is... Mat. Carwow does nothing different from others. I would like to see what group of people the car in the review would be good for, and maybe a lower and higher pricerange.
    For example, if youd review a BMW 3 series, you could say something like "as a couple with no children or about to start a family, this is a perfect choice, but pick the touring if you're active and drive a lot to go to different places. If you already have a family and the children aren't young anymore, you might be better off with a slightly larger vehicle".
    Just my 2 cents anyway.

      Protector of the Republic Early 2000s? Why are you bringing up that? I really hope it has better structural rigigity and safer than them. Put it against other modern 2017-18 cars and its one of the least safe with least safety tech

    It always makes me laugh whenever Matt says 40-50mpg isn't great. My cars barely get 16 mpg combined 😂😂

    That is why it is a budget car... Lets be honest....the less gadgets, the better. Less chance for something to breakdown so less money to spend fixing it.
    And how many gadgets you have got in a car that you do not even use?
    A car is to practical. Car with no stereo is perfect for me. 1st maker where you can actually buy a new car with no stereo so far. Nice

    The most unentertaining review ever. I can see why Clarkson got paid better.
