    I’m an HVAC tech. I’d like to install a BPHE on my ductless mini-split to capture the waste heat for my domestic hot water. I just need to figure out how replace the BLDC fan motor with a water pump so that the microprocessor doesn’t throw an error code. Obviously, a water pump will pull more current, so there may need to be some secondary controls.

    I’m going to use one of these for my ice chest air cooler. It currently works very well but the ice melts quickly. I’m hoping this will slow down the melting since the heated water doesn’t mix

    Is possible to use this Heat Exchangers to use the heat of the exhaust from a wall boiler (natural gas boiler like a: Baxi Roca Victoria 20/20) to make a preheating of the water that this boiler pretends to heat up?
    And if the mounting position is horizontal, is its efficiency reduced?

    • @EngineeringMindset
      @EngineeringMindset  Před 6 lety

      I think baxi typically use a brazed plate hx, in theory I can't see why not. If you contact Danfoss they will be able to assist

    How does the pressure loss on the dimple-plate design compare to the herringbone? The herringbone design is already very thermally efficient and can be difficult to match the thermal and hydraulic requirements which means they are often oversized to reduce pressure losses (flow split between more channels in parallel), i.e. more plates are required hydraulically than thermally. I would have thought that with the dimple design this becomes even more of an issue, you would need quite a few more plates to minimise pressure losses, particularly in chillers and so the operating point would change. The point to take here is that heat exchanger design is technically more advanced than the other system components. But what are your thoughts about this topic?

      Indeed. Very important to optimize the balance you speak of, some apps more critical than others. The hvacr industry has engineered the shjt out of every component

    Hi there, thank you for these really informative videos, i have a few questions
    -can't these HVAC systems use some sort of energy recovery sytem where you convert the excess heat into electricity ? If there is sush a system that is used please make a video about it.
    -what do you think about the new trend of solar assisted AC units, as i've seen they don't work as advertised in most situations, but if used in on a bigger scale like a central cooling system with some sort of sun tracking system with a couple of mirrors they can improve the system, these systems add sunlight heat to the already hot compressed refrigirant which increase its temp difference = increase efficiency and cooling potential, its counter intuituve but its effective if used on a larger scale, what do you think about it ?

      Great questions. Heat recovery is used in some chiller units but I'm not aware of any converting to electricity only to offset heating. It's low temperature low quality energy so it isn't so useful or efficient for electrical generation.
      Solar assisted AC, as a general rule I like to see any and all ways of utilising renewable energy sources. Quite a few large buildings are now using solar assisted absorption chillers esp in Brazil. For AC units it's a nice idea but as you say it doesn't seem to work so well but this can also be because of poor installation decisions. I recently saw a new design which replaces the compressor with a solar absorber. There's definitely room here for expansion and I hope more research will go into these technologies

    You say brazed plate heat exchangers can be flushed , however my gas engineer say it's pointless and difficult to actually clean the debris from inside the exchanger !

    • @EngineeringMindset
      @EngineeringMindset  Před 5 lety

      "can be" doesn't mean you have to. If it's a small unit it might be cost effective to replace but a huge industrial unit might be

    Thank you for the Video. I have a question. I want to use plate chiller for immersion cooling System for mining, it means for cooling down my Miner, the Miners are inside mineral oil, the heat inside the oil reach +110 After 10 Min, so if i use plate chiller and use water for cooling down the minral oil, Do i have to cool down again the water which comes out from the plate chiller? I would like to reach around 40 degree or Less in the oil, and the System should works 24 /24 _ 7/7. Can you please help me to find an effective solution?
    Best regards from Germany
