    Accidental Satan?: There was a boy in my class whose name, no joke, was John Smith. One time we had a relief teacher who'd forgotten her roll, so she was asking everyone their name for her to write down. She spent a solid 15 minutes arguing with John, thinking that he was pranking her, and that the whole class was in on it bc we were all telling her that was his actual name. Eventually she said, quite angrily, "Fine, I'll ask the boy next to you, and he can be mature enough to give me his REAL NAME."
    The other boy's last name, no joke, was Dicks.
    I don't think we learned anything that class, as she was fuming the entire time.

      @@osheridan Nothing, probably. It's just that the name "John Smith" is commonly used as a placeholder or fake name for people when they want to hide their identity, or like the name Jane Doe being used for an unidentified victim of a crime. It's so generic, people don't believe it's a real name, anymore.

      In my grade there was a kid with the last name "Names". Sub was taking attendance and one of my friends signed the roll as "Ringo Starr", so they were already annoyed. Then this poor kid signed the roll after her, and the sub didn't believe it was his real name, so the they sent him to the principal's office. He told what he was there for and they were like, it's fine, just stay until the next class. Not like they were going to get anything done in orchestra class with a sub anyway.

I had a full blown existantial crisis and started to cry. He even went so far to send me away. I had to run to my grandmas house to confirm that i do exist and she called my parents. not exactly the same but...on a class trip, my classmates played a "prank" on me, that one of the girls ran away from the trip because of me. there was a foul mood before that, and everyone was fighting, but i tried to keep myself out of it. went to the bathroom, and when i came back (maybe 20 minutes later), that girl was gone. my best friend at the time, by the way. they said she ran off because i didnt involve myself and speak up for her during their argument. they kept insisting it was my fault, blaming me, acted pissed with me. i broke down and had a panic attack, and ended up lockinng myself in in the bathroom, where i also slept that night. turned out, in those 20 minutes after the fight, while i was showerig, they all made up again, and decided itd be fun to mess with me while my best friend hid in a closet. they planned to have her jumping out at a keyword, but i broke down before they got that far. ...which was five minutes of fucking with me already. it wasnt fun at all. im pretty gullible/naive, so people have been playing pranks like this, or like the invisibility on me for as long as i can remember. this one stuck with me most.

    The archeology thing actually happened on an episode of Time Team, but it backfired. Tony robinson's team kept finding neat items in this one manor garden and getting really excited, but eventually realised that it didn't make geological sense, however, instead of being disappointed, they were happy that it happened because it meant they were being pranked by a long dead figure who once lived at that home - they may have not found a 1500 year old villa or whatever, but they were thrilled to be part of a joke 150 years in the making, as that's STILL HISTORY! And a more interesting story than if it were a real find.

      @davidnasset9147 Před 9 měsíci +35

      This.
      It wasn't a prank, but involved music. At science fiction conventions, there is a sadly dying tradition called filking where you sing songs late at night about dragons, spaceships, unicorns, and why the crew of that one famous star ship is never allowed on the planet Argo again after their last shore leave.
      I started a "kidfilk" where some of us would come and sing filk songs for kids. One year, the performers were doing songs such as "Rippy the Gator" and "I'm Being Eaten by a Boa Constrictor", and were about to do one more when I stopped them and pointed out that their audience, which was particularly young that year, was scared and about to burst into tears.
      We then made sure that the rest of the set was nothing but happy upbeat songs.

      @@davidnasset9147 I _love_ filking. Sad to hear it's losing it's popularity in some places. I can sing reasonably well, but have a shit memory for memorizing songs, sadly, so I never perform anything, just sing along with the songs I partially know; I _always_ get part of the lyrics for anything wrong, no matter how long I've known the tune. I suspect it's 'cuz I have some processing issues & actually can't make out certain words when I hear them sung--it's "muffled", at some points, somehow... Anyways, I miss filking, it was one of the best fun at Cons I remember going to, & I've been doing the sci-fi convention thing since I was 17 (I'm 55, now). There was a girl in grade school I believed for a long time was my friend because she always wanted to hang out at my house after school. I was the weird kid who no one wanted to spend time with for very long so I was really happy I at least had her. Something that should have been a red flag but I was too lonely to notice was that she not only didn't want to hang out at recess or lunch, but she also made fun of me a few times in front of her other friends. I had to change schools in 4th grade because the bullying had gotten so bad I had no chance of making any friends in that school anymore so I needed a fresh start. No calls or goodbyes from my "friend". Didn't change houses but went to a school on the other side of town. My "friend" found this out and called me during my second week at my new school to ask if she could come over. By that point, I was done with her crap and told her no. I still remember her crying on the other end. Didn't realize till later that what she was doing was using me to avoid going home to her abusive father. She didn't actually care about me, she only needed somewhere to go. While I do feel bad she was going through that, I'm still bitter that she used me and still had the audacity to avoid me and make fun of me at school. I honestly forgot about her for a long time because that betrayal hurt me so badly I remembered having no friends at all in my first school.
      I met my first real best friend at my new school. She was assigned to show me around for the first week by the teacher. She's now more a sister to me then my actual bio sister. The difference between a real friend and a fake one is so very different it's almost magical.

Fast forward to my first German language class and I meet the teacher there, I sit at the front row with my new friend. She just blankly looked at me and asked "Who are you? Why are you in this class?" I just told her "I've been in your class for a week now, how do you not remember me when I sit right in front of you? The weekend isn't this long." My friend chimed in with "Yeah, he was sitting right next to me for the whole week." The absolute horror on my teacher's face was priceless. Three minutes later a younger guy and his friend came over and tried to pick it up. I stopped them, instantly staring into confused faces. Then the language barrier kicked in. I tried to explain that another guy just told me to watch that bag, and wasn't sure who was the actual owner. Eventually I just let them take it because they felt genuinely confused. Was glad when the older dude came back, because when he saw the two younger ones leaving me with 'his' bag, he turned around and left without even talking to me again.

      Technically it's not even wrong to assume that concatenation binds differently to multiplication by sign. It's just a different way of doing it, and usually those terms that use it belong together so it's a way to save parentheses. It's practical, if you want to switch the order you just have to swap out the multiplication sign.

    Fun fact for any "pranksters"... these are funny only if you're not actually doing them. Fun to think about. But the amount of psychological damage you can do to people is beyond your imagining. There are so many circumstances people can be in to make the results a lot worse than you predict. Even splashing soda on someone can ruin a piece of clothing expensive enough that it would warrant not hanging out with you anymore because of the financial cost. Be cool to your friends. They may not tell you all their allergies, ptsd, needs, etc. Gentleness is valuable.

      I firmly agree with this. My first thought on the mentos trick was, "And what if they are standing next to something important and vulnerable like a laptop when this goes off? Worse, what if it isn't even theirs?"
      I am actually good at coming up with pranks, but I never do them. I have discoverd, however, that describing them is fun and much less mean.
      I do, however, do positive wholesome pranks on occasion.
      Edited for missing word. :(

      My school laptop was in a box made of legos when I came back from having Covid in 2020 and to this day I and the pranksters found it funny. The computer was right where I left it just in a protective Lego case. Nothing was damaged and I’m still friends with them even after graduation. To pull off a prank, I believe you really need to know your victim and that you both need to see the humor in it

    • @davidnasset9147
      @davidnasset9147 Před 9 měsíci +46

      @@Eris_is_Ollie If this is the way that you do pranks, then you are doing it right. You pick pranks that have little or no negative emotional impact and do little or no damage, even damage that can be "cleaned up". Replacing the laptop case with a Lego case doesn't do either. It is just silly.
      I will occasionally do pranks like this. When my girlfriend's mother didn't have much money, but insisted on giving me a $20 to pay for her fast food order, her change was a ten, a five, four ones, three quarters, two dimes, and five pennies. She never figured it out.

    20:05 I have 2 answers to this that _are not _ controversial:
    1) King Richard III
    Yes, he probably usurped the throne from his nephews. But what we know of him is a complete hit-job by Henry Tudor [King Henry VII] who himself was a usurper who killed Richard III. And Shakespeare was writing for Henry Tudor's descendants, so he's just repeating Tudor Dynasty Propaganda.
    2) King John
    He was the youngest of several brothers, and one of the only sons who _didn't_ rebel against their father and try to seize the throne. John's _wonderful,_ saintly brother, "Richard the Lionheart," rebelled at least twice, IIRC.
    King Richard the Lionheart actually spent nearly all of his time in France [at this time, the Kings of England also ruled most of western-France], and was never really in England.
    King Richard went on Crusade, got himself kidnapped more than once, was freed by paying the ransom … all of that required money. Government money. Guess _which part_ of his kingdom Richard drew that tax money for his adventures and escapades from. Hint: not the French parts.
    King John … again, youngest brother, was never expecting to become king, is stuck in England, with massive government debt racked up by his _"wonderously-great-king-brother."_ So _he_ gets the job of having to refill the treasury. And add on top of that: The English Aristocracy didn't think much of John, either as regent or later as King, because, again, _he was the youngest brother and therefore not expected to be king._ Everyone had aligned with John's older brothers [like, not just Richard, either].
    So King John, a royal nobody, ends up regent, then King, with aristocrats who have _zero_ loyalty to him, and a kingdom bankrupted by his brother. And all of the international problems that had been ongoing since his brother's and even his father's reign.
    So King John gets painted as a "villain" who "oppressed" the English people with heavy taxes. And this is magnified by the story of Robin Hood, or at least the version that made it down to us. Meanwhile, his older brother, who turned on their father, spent the treasury dry, was never in England [and probably hated the place], is remembered as The Gloroious Magnificent "True" King of England, Richard the Lionheart.
    Typical: people fondly remember the leader that made a complete mess of the country, then attack the next leader who's saddled with cleaning up the mess. 🙄
