- How hard is life in prison? We explore the prison regime through the eyes of officers and inmates in Changi’s Maximum-security prison. How does an inmate live in a single-man cell?
In this first episode, we enter a world behind bars to meet the inmates. We follow Graceson, a gangster who manages to get himself a new tattoo in prison and is duly caned for it; Khai, a professional skateboarder who is just coming to terms with the loss of his career; Rusdi who is counting down to his release in 50 days using packets of snacks; And Boon Keng gets into trouble for keeping origami in his cell during a cell search.

Wow no beds , pillow , blankets just sleeping on a concrete floor no way 😞

Go to hotel if you want it
@@AlfariziZakaria I have my own opinion just like you do and it's wrong to make anyone sleep on a floor in a prison there is so many germs and people walk on those floors after walking outside probably stepping on dog crap , spit, and I can only imagine what else . If you think it's okay how people are treated in that jail then that is your opinion.
It's terribly cruel.
go to american prison and get turned into bubas wife, you can rest your head on his hairy chest
The difference I notice is the guards truly have control of the prison opposed to how inmates in America “run” the prison
Remember though that the prison authority, governers and Singapore government will have control over all of the access to the documentary makers and almost certainly the final edit.
Facts!!!
I have also noticed how it's still an effective rehabilitation hotel as opposed to African prisons.. if it wasn't about business. If America want to cut down on crime they should gave treaties with African States and send their prisoners ther. Sureties will give a testimony.kk
@@cdechirume2979 WTF are you talking about?
Lies again? Phone Stalker Jail Prison
What a great system in place, I love the layout drawing for prisoners to follow and that they don't allow anything personal, every prisoner is treated the same, plus it makes the Staff's job a bit easier.
I certainly without a doubt..agree 👍
But is it good for rehabilitation? It seems like they get a lonely and boring existence for years until they are released. Sounds like a recipe for repeat offenders.
And people say us prisons are bad…. Try sleeping on the concrete floor for 2 years.
I saw that and was shocked.
i'd rather be here than american prisons. its uncomfortable but its private and safe. I don't want to be room mates with someone who might be a violent or sexual predator.
I'd rather sleep on a concrete floor than be in an American prison
@@wordedsauce5580 So you don't like human rights?
So well organized for inmates, special diet😮, warm food and all.
These guys have no bed! What is that doing to his back? No bed at night is a sentence in itself!
Plenty of Asians sleep on floor and it’s actually better for your back.
7:12 I like the whimsical music they chose. Its like the dopey music that plays in a how-to craft video. Perfect for a prison video.
This is how a prison should be ran
Ok the room are shockingly empty but the food is better than in many worker's canteens...
would you rather have 4 man cell? and take turns watching each other take a dump and listen to each other cry or beat their meat? also you can't really sleep well while another CRIMINAL is the room how safe would you ever feeel. any prisoner would prefer this austere but private and SAFE prison.
There's a reason why Singapore is one of the safest places in the world. The punishment for committing a crime is a deterrent. Not a lot of people commit crimes because it's not worth the punishment.
Real stories is better then A&E!
Do the crime do the time!
singapore is such a weird country when it comes to their laws. they are very tough
why are tough laws weird ?
you can walk around Singapore all hours and feel completely safe nothing weird about Singapore
Tough on drugs and cleanliness of public space, lenient when it comes to murder -_-
Not as wierd as USA 500 years sentences ffs
@@HelenaMikasThey are werid because he's probably a criminal or an ex con
The Spartans would be jealous
But this is abuse and extreme cruelty. People commenting 'well dont commit crime and dont complain' have obviously never experienced hardship. Supreme ignorance. And the smug satisfaction of these clowns... disgust me.
From a US perspective, weird to see such minor offenses attributed to maximum security imprisonment. Really telling of the culture and expectations of national prison systems. I appreciate one of the guards stating that good behavior in imprisonment does not equate to good citizen behavior- very true and am excellent perspective. As an American I thought conditions were exemplary and humane, but if convicts return in 2-3 months after release, what does it say about human behavior and society? Thank you for this wonderful documentary!
My ex husband sent me a pic as he got off the plane in Iraq. It was spraypainted on a crude brick wall said "Marijuana possession punishable by death." 😮 As I blaze homegrown in my garden. 😢
As it should be!
Maybe the answer isn't prison so much as rehabilitation
It says if you treat someone like an animal, they're gonna act like one
I'm shocked that they record the prisoners via CCTV whilst showering and/or using the toilet... Both are very private...
It’s because drugs are passed at these times.
@cjuuu443 - so naive
crime means you forfeit such rights..
Not as private as being stabbed with a shank.
i am not sure your privacy is a priority if u are in jail ....jail means u have done something. wrong so u forfeit privileges
Very interesting and so well organised .When will we get to see Part 2 .Politeness scored which was amazing compared to UK prisons .-

This is why Singapore has such a low crime rate!
This is my nightmare. I can’t even fathom spending one day alone sleeping on a concrete floor without a pillow let alone years.
Stop being such a drama queen! The inmates are given a nice straw mat to sleep on.
Just don’t do crime
We need these kinds of prisons in the USA. No canteen, no game systems, no TV’s and no privileges. Just a mat on the floor, a cup to drink from and a hole to pee into. Four slices of bread in the morning and a cup of joe. Single cell only.
This will stop a lot of gang problems in the prisons too
Apart from the inmates not having a bed in their cell, this prison is ran quite well. The inmates are given decent nutrition. The shower was in the cell if I'm not mistaken. Single man cells which takes away problems.
This prison is better than most prisons in the west, especially American prisons.
I understand having a celly can bring issues. But this is like being in the whole your entire sentence... Easily bringing mental health issues .. having a celly keeps u sane and connected. Thats why seg is a punishment . This is cruelty
I noticed the guy said his "Breakfast usually consists of half a price of bread", and then looked very happy to receive 4 pieces of bread on camera and later a brimming mug of coffee. Interesting.
Nah he said 4 pieces of bread and the mug of tea of coffee
7:54 "So, our breakfast usually consist of half a piece of bread. So, they will pass it through our food latch."
4 pieces... that's nothing
I was just about to comment about that. He looked so happy to receive his breakfast and coffee. Something so simple that we take for granted daily.
This whole documentary is propaganda. Look how clean the cells and inmates are, how much food they get and a choice for dietary requirements. Come on 🫤
They eat better than me 😂
What do you eat? Soil?
Stir Crazy?...Crazy Stir!
🔥 makes me appreciate Freedom OMG 😢😢😢
Makes me want to be in there
Studies show that it is the degree of perceived "certainty" of being caught, not the degree of punishment, that acts most as a deterrent. So even if the punishment is harsh, if I believe there is no way I'll get caught, then I am more likely to commit that crime. Also, many crimes are spontaneous with no consideration of consequences so harsh punishments may be less effective than rehabilitation programs, particularly if the punishment results in the released prisoner being even less prepared to reenter society.
That’s cruel. No bed. They’re still human. It won’t be prope rehabilitation treating them like animals. Brings out the anger
cruel may be but they get what they are in for. Tough lessons for them to grow
Now they know DAMN WELL they shouldve included captions...🙄
So turn them on
You don't understand Singlish lah? 😂

@@yukiefromoz2573omg so funny 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I feel if you commit a heinous serious crime you should be locked up in a prison such as this because it’s definitely a deterrent. They should implement these policies and types of punishment in every country. I’d never go to prison and advise no one to aim to either, but I must say I’m very impressed how regimented, established disciplined
and organised this place is.
and safe! the biggest worry for me would be other inmates
Safety for inmates.
I like how the guard said their prisons are spartan, but they still affirm human dignity. American prisons allow sweets and chips, but they are brutal and dehumanizing. This prison is spare and they have no comforts, but it seems like the prisoners are at least treated like men.
Bro at the very minimum give them a bed😂
i lived in Singapore for 3 years ..never saw crime or heard anyone having a bad story...i am sure it happens otherwise why would they need jails but i have never felt ao safe
Yeah probably cause they know they would have to go to this place, makes American prisons look amazing for the most part
@devonspain620 whatever works and they kill their inmates just like Americans !!!
wish our prison system was like this here in Australia
Try the US Prisons and jails
Luxury compared to some places !!
this is heartless way of treating human being there is no need for that technically.
So they have showers in their rooms but no beds wtf
reminds me of summer camp, except we had tables and chairs.
So different from the US
They have no bed in there cell ???
That music enrages me to hear it...honestly.
3 and a half years for drug CONSUM! WTF thats insanity.
Why are they not allowed to have beds inside??
I cant believe that one inmate had an origami crane and then the next one drew on a piece of paper! These dudes are out of control!
I messed up my two feet from longboarding tricks but had a good time doing it.
Jail and prison are totally different things. Lol
Thats the way prisons should work everywhere. Here in Finland criminals are treated like kings
If you look up the recidivism rates of Finnish inmates compared to places where inmates aren't treated well, you might change your mind. If your goal is to protect society, you treat your prisoners well and prepare them for a life outside of crime. If you want to ensure they stay criminals, treat them as such. I know which society I'd rather be living in.
Singapore has about 20% recidivism rate, Finland has well over 30%. You are completely wrong@@mascot4950
Lucu banget.... Masa sambil rebahan kaya lagi mainan tp dapat mkn sma minum 😂😂😂😂
That concert bed has to be demoralizing!
I'd be doing mad workouts in that cell, so much room for different exercises, he has plenty freedom to express himself even though it's bleak
Barely any calories in there.. 4 slices of bread for breakfast 🤣
You think that being free. Not the same in there where time stops.

Kinda hypocritical about the tattoo thing causing infections but they are ok to give lashings that cause infection....
So sad They're getting younger and younger.
They don't even get association!
yo hi everyone
Where is this prison?
I'll never say anything about the s***** green prison mattress I had again in my life
very hard to tell what is being said sometimes and the subtitles are even more confusing
Dang no mat justva concrete floor that cruel
i went once for the weekend and it was a holiday and turned into like 13 days and i remember trying to fall asleep was like trying to push a boulder to the top of a hill and you woke up remembering you never got there and it took all day.. and then. it happens again and you know.. its going to be the exact. same. thing. over and over. and over again. ect
i cant shave up like that. it hurts lol!
they really get mats to sleep on over there?

they get more than they deserve. also a cell for 1 person is luxury most innocent people cant even afford.

Now that's what you call prison , I've been to prison in UK , wow, not even a bed or mattress, listen if prison was like that in UK , people would seriously think about committing crime ,well I know I definitely would

In the U.K. our justice system is terrible, they have televisions in their rooms, it’s like they’ve gone to a bed and breakfast place for a while, and the sentences they give out are so lenient, have a look at a crime committed by mick philpot, his wife and his best mate, 6 children died in a fire one night and the wife and his best mate are out already! he will be free eventually too so it’s just been a easy time for them all, we give them rights you see so they get treated fairly. Our prisons are a holiday camp it’s ridiculous.
They're treated better than our oaps in some care homes ! They don't fear going to prison coz it's a holiday cape with their mates. Their human rights mean more than the victims.
@@hazelparr8461 well said Hazel, it’s like Butlins chalets, can ya believe they’ve let them two evil sods out, mick philpot he’s a psychopath and dangerous but we will make sure he gets help on the outside, it’s sickening. Thank you for your comment Hazel good night and best regards from Yorkshire.
I read a bit the Mick Philpott case. He is a psychopath and honestly should be placed in a mental institution for life because normal rehabilitation will not be effective. Now, with that said, it doesn’t mean he should be treated with cruelty. Reasons for this: A psychopath can never be shamed into submission. It makes those treating him with cruelty just as guilty. What people need to understand about incarceration is that the punishment is taking away a person’s freedom. That’s it. Nothing else. It’s not the guards job to punish them further. Having things to keep a prisoner occupied does a couple things. It keeps them placated so they do not have as much violence. It keeps the guards safer and the cost for health services down from inmate violence. It also keeps the inmates from going mental. You don’t want a person becoming worse when they get out. These people do have to integrate back into society and will live in our communities, making them worse leads to more harm in society. You have got to start thinking in terms of what is best for society as a whole.
@@jdmccoy1999 morning from a rainy Yorkshire, he doesn’t see wrong or have any empathy, he’s a narcissist who’s always right a typical psychopath, totally agree that he needs to go into a mental hospital, it’s sad that we don’t have any good funding for our NHS. The revolving door of prison guards coming and then leaving because they don’t get paid enough, the constant abuse they face and then dealing with very sick mentally unstable inmates is a recipe for their own mental health to be challenged, we don’t care enough for the people who sign up to protect us, our military, our police, our medics and firefighters don’t get any support, especially for our military personnel, we just don’t give them a softer landing from years of service and the things they will have dealt with when in wars, so many with PTSD. I come from a family of police officers, we had ten serving and all did 25 to just over 30 years between them, I was born in a police house when there used to be a police officer in the local area, we knew the community and they knew where to come when they needed help, there wasn’t crime like it is now, my family served from the 1950’s to 2010 and were old school and when my daughter was going to join they advised her not to because it’s just not the same. I have 3 wonderful girls, my daughter who wanted to join the police is the one in my user photo, and I’m glad that she changed her mind because I fear for this country, it’s so dangerous now, I feel that there’s so many morals being lost, so many being forgotten when they need help, the House of Lords are banning charities who give tents to the homeless, people committing crimes because of their addictions and the majority begin their addictions legally when given pain medication from the Drs, and then that goes all the way back to our prisons and the justice system. Thank you for your comment it’s good to connect to someone else’s perspective, it’s educational and it’s vital to listen to others so I appreciate your time and understanding. Have a good day hope you don’t get headache after reading my comment, well it’s like a novel there’s that much.😜 The very best of regards to you and yours from a very damp rainy South Yorkshire.
Not everyone in prison is guilty in the UK as there are remand prisoners. Self harm is a serious issue in prison, without TVs it was a lot worse. The loss of liberty is the punishment. Prison is no 5* hotel
I would never go bare foot in my cell, or anywhere in a prison. But it's comforting to see their culture and customs still upheld. All prisons are dirty places, no matter the country or how clean everyone is.
Thank you Father for Freedom Life 🙏 I Appreciate Both Even More 🥰💔😱👁️🧐👀If They Ran it Like This in The States There would Be Less Crime Too cause just have to Sleep On The Floor Would Have Been A Deal Breaker for me To Sit Down and Not Go There Locked up 🙅Each Their Own
It is not too bad compared to other countries, but sleeping on the concrete is a very brutal punishment
Only bread for breakfast?
The hardest nights where soent in a 5 bie10 cell,i remember i drilled a small hole into my neighbors cell and everytime he would change or go to the bathroom i would watch and if put my nostrils in thesmall hole and inhale real fast i would smell his farts
In germany the inmates have comfortable bed, TV, Phones, all kinds of food and other „stuff“ and they still complaining
A hobby in Germany is complaining .I have lived here years as a teacher and still it makes me laugh at them .
Which is the right thing to do. Every single human needs to be treated with a minimum of respect or we are not better than the criminal themself.
This doesn't seem like a hard prison except for not having any one to talk to you can't even write letters.
I don't want to see a person every day, let alone talk to one. Honestly having friends means having weaknesses attached to you, leaching off you. I hate time with a meth head cellmate. Give me a homeless old person any day.
🍴 NATIONAL CHAMPION 👨🍳
Least it looks clean
If you put 5000 Canadian in one prison they would be just as dangerous
All SE Asian countries have horrible prison conditions, at least this one is clean and well managed with the guards clearly having the control and not the inmates. Just don't break the law there and you can avoid all this.
This is literally like a hotel. Accommodations, nice, wholesome food, and 24 hour service. If they were allowed time out and nice bedding, it would be a vacation.
How come they do cell searches, they don't have chance for contraband, they don't have associate with other prisoners
This is very different from the Philippines.🥺Corruption in the government at it's finest and the crime rate is very high. I hope my country will be like this Singapore's correctional cell.
Don't wanna sleep on the floor, don't go2 prison. It ain't "Hilton "
i watch this in rarest time or moment when i feels bad about my life well sometimes we really dont see it till we once in there
😢😢😢😅
it seems that the prison is much more humane and safe than american prisons, but there is a very heavy focus on rules, behavior adjustment and strict
Prison is not supposed to be torture. I see a lot of comments wishing for all prison cells to not have beds & other amenities fit for human comfort.. That is wrong! The prison has already extracted them from society so they are paying for it with their absence. No prisoner deserves to live in squalor or deprived of human rights, they are already locked away in a cage. What a shame how people think this can’t happen to them or their loved ones.. That you would want anyone to suffer more than they already are, void of family & freedom.
Not to judge because that could be me in the cell. But I usually think about this before I commit a crime.
@@Music-yq8qc I don’t know about Singapore but in America, anyone can end up in jail. All someone has to do is accuse you of something & it’s bye, bye for you. We have the most incarcerated individuals in the world. It’s naive to think everyone is guilty just because they’ve been arrested. It’s also cruel to think just because someone did commit a crime they should have to live in squalor. Being removed from society is torture enough.
@@ssmfetti yes, anyone can end up in jail, but jail is short term until you are either bonded out or awaiting your trial. Once you are convicted, you go to prison. If you are convicted, that means you are found guilty and have to pay your dues. Sometimes we get it wrong but the majority of the time we don’t. These prisons are controlled by the guards verses in America, the prisoners control the prisons. Everyone is in a gang and drugs are passed around freely. Assaults happen every day. US should take a lesson here.
@@Jazzykatt23 In the US, most cases don’t even go to trial. Inmates have also been known to spend up to 10 years waiting in jails. Kalief Browder spent 3 years just waiting to go to court & committed suicide due to the whole ordeal. The inmates are pressured into taking plea deals as having no funds for lawyer fees. Public defenders are known to sell out their clients so going to trial with one is futile. It doesn’t really matter if you’re innocent, you can still end up convicted.. Look up Brian Banks. Some are even sentenced to death like 14 year old George Stinney Jr. Sometime the crooked cops set up & plant things on people, eg;Meek Mill. There are countless other examples need not mentioned. The majority of the prisoners being black males, due to systemic racism.. Not because “sometimes we get it wrong;majority of the time we don’t.” The US prison system is overtly corrupt. Also, the prisoners in this video are also in gangs, they also smuggle contraband.. One was even participating in tattooing. Assaults also happen frequently in this jail, you just weren’t listening. They didn’t show any for privacy reasons as well as broadcast restrictions, plus CZcams policy. But they did speak on them. You wanting US prisoners to suffer even more than they already do shows how callous your heart is.
Brian Banks, again, you are talking about 1% of the prison population in America. 99% of prisoners in American prisons are guilty.
Are you not allowed mobile phones like we are here in Britain ?
