  • Delve into the daily life of Peruvian jails and their impact on the prisoners: how they overcome the shock of being incarcerated, the price they are paying for their actions, and the challenges they face as they navigate life behind bars.
We followed these inmates and their families for a year, exploring their backgrounds and the reasons they took the risk of drug trafficking.

To anyone watching this thinking of doing things that put your freedom at risk remember this, your family suffers as much or worse than you. Usually worse. They’re living in a mental prison they can’t escape from even being out in the world. They worry about your well being, they miss you, any wonderful times are always marred by their thoughts of you. Wishing you were there, just missing you, asking themselves why you did what you did, if there was anything they could’ve done differently to prevent you from making that mistake. Even if you don’t care about your own lives, think of your family. They don’t deserve it.

A white couple in front of us was handed a brown paper baggie from some guy that popped out of nowhere, in ten seconds the cops swarmed on them and had them in cuffs. Fortunately my father witnessed the whole thing and was fluent in Spanish. He told the police they should be ashamed of themselves doing this to the people that provide their livlihood, and he would be accompanying them to the police station to give a statement. The police quickly freed the couple and took off as fast as they had arrived. The couple was eternally grateful and bought our family dinner for helping them. I think there’s a fascinating piece of this: each ordinary person serving their first time says they don’t know why they are doing it. They took a chance for no reason. I don’t believe it. None of them are terribly poor. I think they cannot say what it would cost them if they say no. In my opinion, I think there is some kind of force of the will.
Regarding the prison- it has advantages- this scheme of using regular citizens as drug traffickers clears the prisons of habitual criminals (fewer assaults, robberies extortions while you are there). They eat actual food (not institutional food like US prisons or starvation rations like Madagascar) and wear regular clothes. They don’t sit in a cell behind bars all the time, like a caged animal.
Well that’s what it looks like from what they documented.
