One of the best and saddest songs ever sung.
It's sung from the point of view of a dying soldier.

What makes this song so extraordinary is that it could be a soldier on a battlefield anywhere in the world, at any point in human history. It's a rare thing for a musician to write a song with such a timeless quality.

My dad fought in WW2 and had a Gurkha friend. A stick grenade exploded and wounded my dad in the arm. When he looked around his friend had taken the full blast and was killed.
My dad hardly ever spoke of the horrors he experienced but said that he was shielded by his friend and would probably be dead.
He lost a lot of mates during that time but he never got over the loss of his Gurkha friend and said he was the kindest, bravest man he ever met.
My dad never hated the Germans and thought it was sad that politicians always start wars but are rarely affected by them on both sides.
This song always hits me right in the guts every time.

Saw Mark Knopfler once in Oberhausen. Due to a back injury he sat on a bar chair. I guess there were about 10-15.000 people there, but sometimes the venue was so silent, you could hear a needle drop and it felt like he played in your living room. Absolute legend. Only man on the planet who has a goosebump-voice and plays goosebump-guitar...Greetings from the "Ruhrgebiet"

This song will always remind me of an episode of 'Our Tune' which was introduced by Simon Bates on Radio 1
I can't remember the year, but a Woman had written in to the Show to explain the loss of her Husband in a War (at that time) leaving her and her Children on their own.
Simon Bates told the Story to the listening audience, with his usual heart felt description, then he introduced this song that the Woman had chosen as 'Our Tune'........It simply had me in pieces listening to it.
I hope today that this Woman and her Children are much happier.

Everyone’s performance on the stage that night still inspires. It’s surprising how many have no idea it exists. Everyone I show it to is blown away. "Every man has to die". Everybody dies in war. Only, some of us get to live to tell the tale, and some of us don't. That's just the way it is (the ugly truth that stings). I asked my family to please play this song at my funeral. The eternal human dilemma. Those closest to each other fight the most. Europeans are, factually, genetically, culturally, in terms of everything, a variation of a theme, and we have been in war, killing each other, for at least 2000 years, and it still is going on right now. WHY the F..in HELL? And Sarah -- a) thanks for sharing your emotions. It helped me a lot with crystalizing an African female protagonist in a Novel I am working on. AND: I struggled for a moment with your accent. First thought: something South Georgia (US). Second thought: no way... she is the real thing. Ghana perhaps? But no. Then I got it: Nigeria! Fun fact: When I studied in Hawai'i, I had a Sri Lankan roommate. His accent was somewhat similar ;-).
Oh -- and just for clarification: the African novel character I referred to is a refugee who made it to Europe all by herself, after incredible heartship, at age 16. She worked and studied really hard, became an engineer, got her Ph.D. and at the current stage in the novel is head of a maritime engineering research lab. So far in my writing she lacked emotional depth 🙂

Listening to this song for what must be the thousandth time and sobbing just like the first time. My heart breaks to see the rise of the far right, the rise in hatred in all its forms. This song still unheard and unheeded by so many of us 😢
