Maybe the voters/viewers subscribing to IMDB and casting votes just don't like black-and-white films, which I think are very mood-setting and pleasant.

How about the title 'The Second Woman' as a key feature of Rebbeca was Rebbeca, Mrs D'Winter's was the Second Mrs D'Winter's. Both the first wives were killed in suspicious circumstances which are only revealed later in the story.

This movie just doesn't hang together for me. When the horse and dog were harmed, why didn't anyone call in the police. If Jeff is so delusional why was there no intervention? Since when does loving someone justify repeated and bold interference in someone's (who is sane) life? People seemed to feel that Jeff was off plumb, but no one makes any effort to address the problem; he just wanders about among them while everyone is in social denial. In the end, Jeff has all the answers to confront his boss, but never discusses any of it with her along the way, yet in the end, he professes this tremendous love for only her. This needed to have a lot of rough edges filed off it to make this flow well for me. ***

I can see why people reference Rebecca - the deceased fiancée, the waves crashing on the rocks, the beautiful empty house on the headland, Florence Bates etc. - but it isn't psychologically like Rebecca at all. It's a different genre of story and the male and female leads are different characters and their roles reversed. You can imagine how utterly fantastic this movie would have been, directed by Hitchcock. But it's still a goodie. I didn't guess whodunnit until shortly before it was revealed and even then I didn't see the final plot twist coming.

He even spoils froth like The Enchanted Cottage for me. When you can be out-noired by Dick Powell, it's time to GTFO of the noir game. Young's OK in Crossfire, but another actor (Edward G. Robinson? Dana Andrews? Adolphe Menjou?) might have made more out of that voice-of-reason gig. A bit Rebecca - ‘ The last time I saw Manderly’ opening is definitely derivative. That’s okay, imitating the best isn’t a bad thing.
