I fell in love with this movie many years ago at the age of about 12. Broke my heart then and it breaks my heart now. A real masterpiece!

I guess you were about 11 or 12. Your parents were either out or busy, either way you had the tv for yourself and there was not much else on to watch - turns out how lucky you were indeed...that happened to me with Hitchcock’s ‘Rear window’. Then it disappeared from tv consumption for many years - lucky me - I was glued to my seat.

Edward G. was AMAZING! Even as a little kid, I could appreciate his acting chops and liked his movies. He could do ANY genre.... He always delivered a "perfect" character.... performance. Compare his "Our Grapes Have Tender Vines" and "Little Caesar".... Entirely difference types of movies.... and he nailed them both. He was a perfect actor. I'm so glad that he is still appreciated. (an aside: isn't Joan Bennett simply gorgeous??? She too was an accomplished actor). I'm now 81 years old and I still love movies from my childhood.
WEll, like most of them back then, Edwar G was a character. He played THAT character. But I cant see him doing "Streetcar" like Brando, Or Serpico Like Pacino. He didnt have to. We wanted to see the guy. Edward G. But good actor, Nahhh

One of the finest noirs in history. Impeccable direction by Lang plus an example of how superb an actor Edward G. was. A non-leading man who simply carried a picture on his artistic abilities not a pretty face. Duryea and Bennett are also terrific in this outstandingly cynical picture. A Classic.

Ya gotta watch him in the movie "2 Seconds," particularly the courtroom scene. He's incredible.

I don't think life would be the same without these old treasures. Robinson is a wonderful and unique gift to the craft. I'm sorry that I'll never have the chance to shake his hand. I only wish those of the beyond could receive a deserved yet belated heart-felt thank you. For what it may be worth, thanks Edward G., and R.I.P.

I met him every Christmas Eve at Uncle Mendals dinners when the Robinsons attended with our family. He was always smiling and very friendly to us young kids. Untie was his lawyer.

This has long been one of my favorite movies. I really like Edward G. in his lesser known, non-gangster roles. Joan Bennett is at her most alluring, and Dan Duryea is always strangely likeable, despite playing such a slimy weasel. Lang's primo Noir direction brings it all together.

Dan Duryea was strangely likeable because he was always playing against his real character. He was a simple home loving man, married for 35 years, a Scout Master and a pillar of the PTA
Duryea wouldn't let his sons see his films saying he "didn't want to give them ideas".
An old Edward G Robinson movie came to mind when I was watching “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” I googled the info and bingo I found one of my favorite movies Scarlet Street I’m about to watch it now.

I felt so.......bad for Johnny at the end when they take him to the chair an he crys out " I didn't do it , I didn't do it , give me a brake , won't somebody believe me ? " I never get square break " " Oh somebody believe me " ! Ok so he was a creep but he didn't deserve that. This was a really good movie. Gonna look for more movies with Dan Duryea. I just txt in , black an white 40s / 50s gangster movies an this whole playlist pops up. Even good war movies.
I just watched The Woman in the Window. It's a must see if you like Scarlett Street. These old movies are fantastic. There's nothing even close to comparable today. Thanks for posting!

Have watched this great classic film noir movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood around 3 or 4 times, never tire of it! The cast and crew all did a fabulous job., love it!

They broke the mold with Edward g never be another like him. Doesn't matter who he plays because he becomes that character and you believe him.top 5 of the best ever. A wonderful human being also.
One of the great film noir classics. Great writing, acting, very atmospheric direction. Irony prevalent in virtually every scene.
EGR demonstrating his acting range, and Dan Duryea, often an underrated actor, turns in yet another terrific sleazeball performance. In real life, he was an Ivy League graduate who had a successful career in advertising before he went into acting, and, was a dedicated family man, active in his local PTA and the Boy Scout troop of his sons.
I met Ms. Bennett on two occasions as she was the grandmother of my best friend in college. At my friend's wedding, she and I discussed this movie. She said this was her favorite of her films, along with The Woman in the Window, which was also directed by Fritz Lang. She said her working chemistry with Duryea was the most genuine of any actor she ever worked with.

Edward G. Robinson was a very refined man and an artist whose work was commercially shown. It was said that he had one of the best art collections in Hollywood during his time.
Many don't know this, but Edward G. Robinson WAS a very good painter. So was Tony Curtis and Anthony Quinn.

As a kid growing up in the 60s I never saw a E.G.R. movie where he wasn't playing a gangster. I loved those flicks! And a lot of those were already 10 years old or more. These flim noirs are awesome! 👍

EDWARD G ROBINSON IS DEFINITELY IN MY TOP 5 ACTORS..ALSO THIS WAS A GREAT MOVIE ,PERIOD!!!
An extraordinary job of of film directing by the often underrated Fritz Lang, shot on the Universal lot in 1945 in a high glossy style. Unusual care was taken in every shot of the B&W photography and lighting by Milton Krasner with its wonderful atmospheric shadows and dark streets. The particularly realistic art direction and set decoration by the Universal Art Department make this one of the finest examples of big studio work at its best. Lang, as only the best directors who worked under studio control, was somehow able to have an inordinate control every aspect of the filmmaking, getting perfect performances from everyone in the cast from Joan Bennett as the dumb girl in love with a sadist down to the smallest bit player, some of whose names do not appear in the credits. The screenplay is by Dudley Nichols, long time collaborator with John Ford, who ingeniously gets around the censorship of the time by making the most heinous human beings and their acts understandable and sympathetic. No small achievement, of course. and one that would have been impossible without the brilliant presence and humanity of Edward G. Robinson as the little man.

This was a first class production. At the time, Universal was considered lower class, as compared to MGM, Warners, Paramount or Fox, but the studio was fighting to get back on its feet after bankruptcy nine years before. This film helped Universal.
Edward G. WAS a great actor and a class act all the way thru his heartbreaking portrayal of Sol in "s
"Soylent Green" his final film for which I believe was he was nominated for Supporting Actor.
Mr. Robinson, sadly, was never nominated for an Oscar. He did receive an honorary Oscar posthumously in 1973 (for the 1972 release year).
The 1940s and the 1950s a great era off film making.

He was so very good a playing a begger or a king, it wasn't a difficult task for Mr. Robinson.! In life he was considered one of our most knowlegable Art collectors. Many paintings valued well into MIIIIONS of dollars. Later in life he & wife entered a bitter divorce resulting in the courts ordering Mr. R to divide the huge now even higher valued Art collection with ex-Mrs.G. Not even that blow would deter his acting career. In his very senior years he proved more then ever he was an actors actor right up to his death almost in front of the cameras. Thanks for keeping his great talent alive by running so many Edward G. Roninson films .
Just like Mr. James Cagney, Mr. Robinson was a very versatile actor. Funny how gentle men can be so dark. Mr. Cagney was unbelievable as Mr. George M. Cohen in Yankee Doodle, saw the movies as a young adult and fell in love with him then. I feel Dan Duryea was very under rated as an actor (played a great sleeze). CZcams has a small documentary on Mr. Duryea. What a treasure so many of Golden Era of Movies and actors left for us. Happy viewing from Las Vegas, NV 07/07/2018

Very few newer movies ever leave the impression on me that these classics do, yesterday I saw "The Red House" 1947 and Robinson is amazing in both, incredible story writing and time well spent in watching, thank you for the upload

Yes he was such a great actor. As a kid I adored Joan Bennett in 'Dark Shadows' on TV. I knew she had been a Movie Star long before but i am only now, 50 years later, discovering this beauty.
My grandma had a vhs copy of Red House, I saw it when I was a teenager, and it left an impression on me too. What a great movie!

Everybody is scamming everybody. This is a movie to enjoy with a step back from sentimental sympathy for the most emotionally vulnerable character. Everybody gets what's coming to them in this story with its many twists and turns.

I think the ending of that movie is a little soft for a film noir.. it is in my top 10 favorite Eddie Robinson films.

I love this era of Hollywood but I must say that Fritz Lang was, for the most part, held back by the Hollywood machine. As much as I love Scarlet Street and The Big Heat, they were midgets compared to the giants of his early period such as M, the first two installments of his Mabuse trilogy, and Destiny.

@@thomaspiccirillo6820 You're kidding? Did they have "video" back then? Tough in the early going, on the cheap. Bad lighting, sets, cinematography, acting, etc. But then things got better. A lot of filming errors on that show. Sets moving and falling, crew seen in the shots, in mirrors. Only thing that made that show work was Barnabas.

Dan Durya, who more or less played second banana, is better than almost all today's 'stars'.

At 21:02 the record sticks at the lyric "love me" and she's reading a magazine or book entitled "Love Stories." These old movies used ironic symbolism fairly regularly and once in awhile I catch them. Good stuff. Thanks for making them available!

Edward G Robinson has been my all time favorite actor for years - my all time favorite Robinson film is "The Stranger" that also featured Orson Wells & Loretta Young. I actually purchased the DVD, however, I believe you can see it free here on you tube.

in real life EGR was a buyer of fine art, his real life collection was very valuable, his last movie was Soylent Green, he was dying and his art collection was mostly lost to his ex wife, like always women take a mans life, his money. but he let us with never ending art his work he was a true artist. a class act. Dang it... Cross deserved better in life than he got. I guess Hollywood wasn't going to promote someone getting away with murder. Those 2 destroyed his life and stole the only source of joy he had. It was justice they went to hell together. Too bad he couldn't see that.
Exactly! Cross was a kind, gentle soul. Between that harpie wife and those 2 grifters, he endured so much. His gullibility was his biggest fault.I really liked this picture, but a couple of things really bugged me. One was how easily he was manipulated. Two was the return of the "dead" husband. That was too kooky. Third was Kitty getting away with pretending to be the artist. Then hiding under a comforter when approached by Cross, driven mad by her cruelty, wielding an ice pick! As often as Johnny beat her, you'd think she'd know to - I don't know - MOVE! Lastly, the sad ending. Jeepers!
Good call. This was one of Hollywood's many propaganda pieces. The idea was and is to beat up Americans with Christian morality. Ironic that Edward G. Robinson was born Emanual Goldenberg and therefore Jewish. Those two crooks had it coming to them and I wish Goldenberg's character could have begun painting again and made big bucks and had a happy life. And I wish Christians today were tougher and would deal with the evildoers without this false guilt.

I have only seen a few of Lang's films including this but they have all been excellent. And to think this was the director's personal least favourite of his own work, I will be looking out for the rest.
Scarlet Street moves at a quick pace without ever feeling rushed. For example it seemed like an eternity before Kitty finally turned openly mean. She is played perfectly shallow by Joan Bennett in this crossfire of awkward chance type relationships. Truly great work.
I actually got to about 40 minutes watching it on Plex before the ads every 5 minutes almost drove me mad, particularly as they were all totally out of place betwixt scenes that were cut over 70 years ago. So very greatful I could watch it here without any interruptions.
Another one of my favorite films directed by the great Fritz Lang. The entire cast is excellent , especially Joan Bennett as the gorgeous and scheming. Femme fatale Kitty.😊😊😊

Have you seen "The Woman in The Window"? it's a very similar story and really good. It's With Edward G Robinson again. The ending in that one is different though.
