This song is specifically about Kaveh (the character in the video) and his job as an architect he had at one point gone with working on a building perfecting it causing him to go broke and homeless having to move in with Alhaitham(another character) this song is showing his pain and how much stress he is really under showing his sadness and everything he’d do just to make his creations while also dealing with acting happy and normal on the outside he also has other problems he deals with blaming himself for his fathers death then trying to keep his mother happy as she eventually moves away starting her own life Kaveh is a very complex and wonderful character the Lyrics vocals and everything else about this song seems to describe him perfectly i have been obsessed with this song since it came out! Also this may not be the perfect comment but I did my best I could’ve forgotten something or gotten something wrong

not to mention the puzzle piece representing KAevhs heart. Showing how he is such an altruist and kind person that he is giving himself away.

@@ScribbleTheTalkingSketch To give a bit more context: when it comes to architecture Kaveh is basically a genius. He was commissioned to build a palace called the Palace of Alcazarzaray. He got to work on it and was almost done with it when what's basically a fictional natural disaster happened destroying the worksite. The person who made the commission didn't want to fund the project anymore but Kaveh had already invested too much into it both emotionally and financially. He ended up finishing the project out of his own pocket. The Palace is a master piece, and his magnum opus, but what should have made him rich and famous left him in financial ruin and he's still not been able to pay off to this day.

Another key feature of this song is that it isn’t just about the character Kaveh- but artists as a whole. The obsession with creating a piece isn’t for fun- but survival. Artists can pour their entire life into a piece before displaying it to the world. If the world likes it, the artist can earn income and live another day. If they don’t, the artists will feel almost a rejection from the world as they have put their blood, sweat and tears into it. it is a common occurrence that desperate artists solely making a living off of their creations have sacrificed their physical and emotional health for their job. Hence the ‘bleeding paint, shattered heart. That’s what makes a work of art.’ Will Stetson captured the struggle of an artist beautifully, Brough Kaveh’s self depreciation/criticism, the weight of a mistake, and the build up in the song (relating to burnout syndrome). That’s one of the main reasons it actually became popular- because of how personal it got with artists. But yeah :D

Since you asked, this song is about a specific character called Kaveh. In the game, Kaveh is an architect who is somewhat of a perfectionist with the buildings he designs, often staying up multiple nights in a row to make them beautiful to see but also practical to actually live in. His magnum opus was a beautiful palace that earned him a fancy title and reputation, but not long after construction was supposed to be completed disaster struck and the palace was completely destroyed. Kaveh couldn't accept his work of art being thrown away like that, so he went into deep debt, even selling his childhood home, in order to rebuild it even better in a different location. This whole process took a big tole on him though, and no-one but a few select people are even aware of his financial situation and how much of a tole this building took on him. (Making the decision to go through with all of this and stand up for his ideals and work are also how he gained his Vision, the thing most characters in Genshin use to control elemental energy, magic basically)
This song is a reflection of the turmoil that building the palace took on him yes, but also about how he puts 110% of himself into every single project he undertakes, often to his own detriment. On the surface he's the Kaveh from the first verse, theatrical, light, happy, an architect who focuses on making the people who will eventually use his buildings happy. The second verse starts showing cracks to his inner thoughts. The final verse is a side of himself that even he tries to ignore and forget about, the side that knows what he's doing is risky at best and outright self destructive at worse, but it's the "right way" to do things. After all, if him looking a little sleep means that the hundreds, thousands of people who live, work, play, exist in his buildings can be happy, who is he to deny them that happiness?
(Fun fact! Of the 2 rarities of characters in the game, Kaveh is the lower rarity type. Genshin puts a lot of work into all of their characters and it's really nice to see coming from other gacha games where only the rarest of characters matter...)

Just funny mention: local God of Wisdom literally days he's the most close of understanding what wisdom is. Perhaps the little detail he misses is that his happiness matters too. Another character, that saves Kaveh from crisis - Al'Haitham argues a lot with Kaveh, because he can't admit that the only reason Kaveh is unhappy is he himself
Another fun fact: there was an tournament event where Kaveh participated and he almost has lost it due his will to just help animals who were confused out of anomaly they got in. He could easily win that stage in minutes, but empathy is his bless in life and curse for happiness

I can’t believe you covered Will! By far this song is stuck in my head for quite a bit. He got sponsored by Genshin to make an original song.
Will Stetson covers a lot Vocaloid, Utaite and popular Japanese songs! Everything. Honestly his English covers are excellent, the translation is equally as good as the original version. Hope you cover some of his covers! His cover of lag train and acoustic version of kick back are very relaxing.

i don't follow will closely but if you are talking about the hoyo fair i believe that was not sponsored rather it was just a showcase of fanworks as far as i know there isn't any official english genshin song in genshin impact and their ost is done by a professional orchestra not by fans

I think it references how Kazeh feels like no one acknowledges him as a great architect and how he feels belittled by the people around him. But that's just me.

this song actually had a major impact on me, Kaveh is my favorite character and I relate to his struggles all too well. I'm an artist, and I struggle with perfectionism. I know how broken it can make you feel. Kaveh is an extremely important character to me, even if he's fictional, and has had such a huge impact on my life. Love him to death.

You should really listen to “Live in Life”!! It’s by the same singer who made this song, Will Stetson. He makes a lot of covers and I think some originals himself, like this one, ‘Writing on the Wall’. Live in Life definitely has an entirely different mood and message from Writing on the Wall, but I think it would be worth checking out if you haven’t yet!

Like your reaction video as usual, this song is impressive. I would like to recommend another song from HoYoFair 2023, "XOXO", it has a different style from "Circus Addiction" and "Writing On The Wall" but still is a nice and fun song to hear, which is my favourite in HoYoFair 2023. Thanks for producing great reaction videos all the time!

AAA I've been on the rove for everyone and anyone reacting to this song so your analysis was a real treat!!! I'm also extremely unfamiliar with Genshin, but I listened to this song purely because of Will and I did *not* regret it! He's largely a cover artist for various japanese songs, but he has released two other original songs recently that you could check out if you're interested! One song is another Genshin fansong called "Live in life", and the other is a complete original called "Koala" :D.

Thank you for making this video with a super refreshing viewpoint. I haven't seen any other youtuber listen to and watch this song but actually analyze it from a musical perspective. For fans of the game, it's definitely easy to get lost in the way it portrays Kaveh's personality and hardships, but the composition of the music (and also the video) is so well done and almost hauntingly gorgeous. It's awesome to see that recognized.
As many others have said, the song is about an architect named Kaveh, who is an absolutely beautiful and creative human soul in every sense of the word, but has layers of tragedy and trauma that weigh him down and cause him to have self-destructive tendencies due to his need to live up to his reputation as a genius and pursue perfection in his work. Whether or not it's specifically about his masterpiece is up for debate however (I don't think it is, but the existence of his masterpiece probably doesn't help his mental health since it is both his ultimate pride and also the highest standard that none of his future works may ever compare to).

Had to pause ur reaction the moment the music started playing cuz knew I need to sing it at least once before u start pausing and going back... A fkin addicting masterpiece, whenever it's playing in my car I have to go all out. Been months since I learned about it's existence and it still sometimes chokes me up. And once again watching u react makes me rediscover what's happening in the instrumental. Insane. The fact it's made from scratch-- genius. Music is amazing. I feel spent but satisfied at the same time and it's been just one song,

Hilarious you're analyzing a Will Stetson only a few days after Nerissa's english Vampire cover as he's very large in the translyrics scene.
Many years back he actually did a few duets with Rachie who I recommended in the Vampire cover too.
