To give a bit of context: when it comes to architecture Kaveh is basically a genius. He was commissioned to build a palace called the Palace of Alcazarzaray. He got to work on it and was almost done with it when what's basically a fictional natural disaster happened destroying the worksite. The person who made the commission didn't want to fund the project anymore but Kaveh had already invested too much into it both emotionally and financially. He ended up finishing the project out of his own pocket. The Palace is a master piece, and his magnum opus, but what should have made him rich and famous left him in financial ruin and he's still not been able to pay the debt off to this day.

-And for the second part (im not sure if this is completely right, just a thought)
it's talking about how no matter how much he does, his clients will always complain and see mistakes in them (the voices)
And him needing to live up to people's expectations to the point it's just not good for him

@@RoarTheRapper there is more context, after his birth his dad abandoned kaveh and his mom, she worked real hard to meet ends and she did her duties till kaveh went to college and then she decided to see a man and leave the city with him, in a sense abandoning kaveh after he was old enough to feed himself, and this is one of reasons he developed deep trauma, he treated each project like his own child and unlike his parents he refused to abandon them, to the point of reckless abandon, which lead him to this position it's a lot more touching story knowing this

@@vivanmaurya as far as I understood, back in the sumeru event Kaveh told us, that his dad actually died and he blamed himself for that a bit. After all he wanted his dad to win that competition but after he lost he went to the desert and now I'm not completely sure anymore, but wasn't he saving other people from sth but died in the process?
But yeah I can see how that also seems as if his father also just abandoned them, although I in my personal opinion (it is okay if others don't share it, just my own opinion of course^^) I think if kavehs dad wouldn't have died in the desert, he would have come back to him and kavehs mom. It was just a tragic accident.

The dolls resemble how he puts his blood, sweat and tears into everything that he makes. The voices are complaints from clients (Kaveh tends to be a people pleaser as he really didn't have the best childhood considering his father died and he didn't get the proper support from his mother)

  • @dawnseeker176

kaveh's main problem is he wants to help others. he holds the ideals that are the hardest to follow through on, that are the hardest to not stray from.
he has the ideals to believe in humanity and does everything he can to help others even when doing so slowly destroys him.
as another character close to him, alheithem, puts it "im not the one who works himself to death just to put a smile on his clients face."
the path of an idealist is usually thrown to the side as the world slowly crushes them without a care.
its is usually not out of maliciousness that the path of an idealist is abandoned, but out of self preservation.
but kaveh....kaveh never gave in. he never gives in even while he is slowly being crushed by the world. the "right way" invites countless misfortunes.
we must ask, why is it that so many people start out saying they are going to change the world and have lofty goals but almost none of them come to adulthood and still carry those ideals.
becasue reality is not kind to such ideals and there are countless people who will take advantage of and exploit such kindess and compassion. when push comes to shove people usually take the path of least resistence and unfortunately kindness is not a road easily traversed, while indifference is rather easy to walk.
to put it in an analogy. kindness is like climbing a mountain with nothing but your hands and feet there is no safety and when you fall you fall very far and very hard. while indifference is just a leasure stroll in the park even if you trip and fall it won't amount to much.

Thus is the life of an artist.
“Creating is drawing erasing and drawing again,”
“The more you work the higher the stakes, and the bigger the sorrows to drown,”
“You have to ignore them the echoing voices that cackle and curse as you toil away,”
All of these relate to the problem that artist in general have. Having to make something perfect, their conscience telling them that it’s not enough, etc. Slowly destroying oneself trying to make every detail flawless, trying to satisfy others in exchange for their health and sanity, and many more. These are all characteristics of an artist and Kaveh is the best example of this.

heres some context if the character (very simplified but yeah)
kaveh takes pride in his works especially one of them its some palace i cant spell but as he was building it there was something called withering that caused it to collapse. he wanted to carry on building it because of his perfectionism and ideals (even when the client said he didnt have to) and sacrificed a lot to get it completed, and is now in debt. he cares a lot about others but he disregards his own health, and pretends hes fine to not burden anyone. the voodoo dolls arent part of his character but more just like symbolism of his self destruction. i hope this helps a bit :)

Also the nailing the voodoo doll displays that commissioners are taking away his touch/ signature style for the buildings he designs, this is explained within his hangout event, and even described in some dialogue. He has to do has the clients requests or else he won't have any mora (money ) and he has a huge debt to pay off to Dori the owner of the Palace of Alcazaray ( and a playable character) and his rent to Alhaitham his roommate ( also a playable character).
His hangout explains that he has to do dozens of drafts for this clients until they are satisfied, and after so many drafts, he removes any touches displaying that the building was designed by him or they just find a different architect . By doing this be works himself to death to make his clients happy.
At the end of A Parade Of Providence event, it displays how much his past and his job effect him so much. You can hear in his voice the pain that he's constantly in because of this.
This song displays Kaveh character very well, as this is what he has to deal on a daily basis, just imagine the depression and anxiety one would get is this happened to some close to you and you didn't even know.
Despite this he is a loved character and is a relatable character to people in different professions.

Several people already talked about Kaveh's downfall as he put too much effort into his masterpiece for his own sake.
But there is actually one additional part to his background, now I didn't play that part of the game to completion so it is mostly what I heard rather than what I've seen myself, but
There's this character named Alhaitham, who's studied with him, but completely opposite to Kaveh's mindset, is individualistic and cold.
But, one day, they met in a bar, as it turns out Kaveh was so ashamed of his own ruin he never told anyone that he was basically homeless following the creation of the palace he designed.
And as someone he actually knew saw him drink his sorrow away, he cracked and spilled everything.
Instead of using this as blackmail material (which is something I feel Alhaitham would do for a lot of other people), he showed one of his rare instances of compassion, and now we're at a point in time where the two of them are roommates after Alhaitham took him in.
They often argue about their ideals, with Alhaitham calling him out for being self destructive and easy to manipulate.

I love it how this song i'snt just for architecture, its for all kids of art, singing, drawing, ect, ect, it perfectly maps out what an artist goes through, an artist can work on a project that maybe took them days, you were right with with the x on Kaveh's face, Kaveh is an architect so in his eyes a structure or a building has to be perfect, so if he makes a project and fails, he will try to cross himself out from the world to make that project perfect(correct me if i'm wrong!) but Kaveh is also a very sensitive person so it makes it even harder. And in the lines like "The architect lives on inside" or the "The architect is trapped inside" i think (again correct me if im wrong) that means that when a structure is made people look at it and say, "that looks terrible" or be more better "that looks amazing" without knowing the history or what an architect goes through to make a project. In one of Alhaithems (his roommate) voicelines it says (AGAIN CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG) it says something about he bought a bunch of keychains because the seller said it was going to a hospital or something, but in sumeru (the spot they live) Heathcare is free.

I’ve been absolutely IN LOVE with this song recently, and I’ve been waiting for you to react to this
The other comments explain it pretty well, but I love how Will was able to basically capture Kaveh’s whole character into this one song!
A perfectionist, who lives off the joy of a job well done and the happiness of others who enjoy his work, but does it all with a happy face despite the constant nagging of his clients and his past

  • @HagFaerie
    @HagFaerie Před 7 měsíci +24

Brilliant reaction! Will is super talented at dissecting characters and making amazing songs based on their lore.
A lot of great comments already explaining Kaveh's motives and personality, but i just wanted to add an extra point that although isn't lore, actually makes this song hit a little harder.
Kaveh is an architect from Genshin Impact who literally pores himself in to his projects (thus the metaphorical voodoo dolls) but in the game there was recently a bug which caused kaveh to delete whatever he touched with his ability. The bug is luckily fixed now but for a time people could join your world as Kaveh and delete everything making your world an unplayable void. When this song was showed recently at Hoyofair the bug had only just been fixed, so when we watched this we couldn't help but be reminded that the sweet and caring architect who would give up everything to help people was destroying everything he touched.

Relating to the Xs and how his expression doesn't change: it's not that he doesn't care or is still happy. It's a fake smile.
He doesn't want anyone to worry about him, so nobody knows how he actually feels. He appears happy, best t he's actually very upset and just generally sad.

2:44 'No matter the cost, do things right', 'worth every Mora I spend'. Kaveh is in debt. I know nothing else about his backstory other than his parents so as soon as I heard those words, I knew it wasn't going to be a happy song. Any last-minute changes to buildings cost money, even more so if you already bought the materials that are no longer needed.
4:56 The person who put him in debt in the first place presently makes fun of him for his mistakes. Then there's also the clients that keep wanting to change things and him wanting to make them happy because 'you have to follow through'.

You finally got to it! So many things about this song are perfection, the lyrics, the VIDEO, the emotion, the sound and music. Man, he really hit with this one.
Kaveh to put simply is a perfectionist in what he does, so much so to the extend he sacrifices too much to get things perfect, including himself. As well as his very low self-worth, it takes a toll on him.
The voodoo dolls have nothing to do with him at all per-say, but the imagery. Him sacrificing himself in his work, to an unhealthy point. Till the only time he can see his work being perfect, is if he sacrifices a "piece" of himself to do it, hence the puzzle piece aesthetic at the end.
What's crazy is that this a 4 star character in genshin, pretty minor character, and Will chose him and pulled this song out of it, which definitely transcends the character and can speak on terms with regular people.
Thanks for the reaction! I still listen to his Hu Tao song to this day, and while I like that one more as a song, I like this one more as a story. Will is fantastic.

As for the question on whether he's been disregarded before when trying to do his job, yes.
In the beginning of Kaveh (the guy's) story plotline, he argues with one of his clients about how the budget cuts for the project they commissioned were going to ruin the look of the building, was impractical, etc. They don't adhere, and frustrated, he storms off. He goes on to waste away at a bar, complaining about how he's had to redo blueprints over and over to satisfy the clients he gets as an architect.
Further into the storyline, you can see him trying to reason with one of his clients about the aesthetics and materials for a building they want commissioned, and he gets more and more frustrated. In one outcome of the storyline, he complains about having this experience so many times, and breaks down a little about how they just don't have aesthetic taste.
Kaveh is a perfectionist, and the lyrics, "But the right way takes a toll" and, "the architect is lives on/remains/is trapped inside" depict his growing frustrations about the people he has to deal with in his line of work.
Sorry for writing so much, I just love both this song and the character it's about. It's nice to see people recognizing the song and analyzing it, especially from an outsider's point of view.
    Have a good day!

  • @kathrynhouser9917
    @kathrynhouser9917 Před měsícem +1

The Xs all throughout the mid part of the song where Kaveh's downfall really starts are ment to symbolize his general personality. He's a people pleaser. The 'the customer is always right' guy. That is ment to symbolize him putting this own thoughts, intentions, and Ideas aside to make the client happy. And I wasn't that they were yelling or making fun, but it was that when he was at school, he was taught that elegance and beauty were just as important as practicality. So when people began to favour practicality over anything else, his clients would criticize the designs and he would have to start all over from scratch on an entirely new idea.
The dolls symbolize him putting himself on the line, sacrificing himself and his needs to make the client happy. Like that n his backstory, he was commissioned to design and build the palace of alcazarzaray by a rich and famous merchant named Dori. The construction was about 80% done when a sort of natural disaster struck and absolutely wrecked everything. Kaveh wanted to rebuild, but Dori was unwilling to fund the project. Kaveh ended up selling his home, all of his belongings and using the money earned along with all of his own personal savings to pay 70% of the costs while Dori payed the last 30%. This bankrupt Kaveh as well as putting him in debt to Dori. He was rendered homeless after this until a friend found him and helped out, but that's a whole other story.
And yes 'the sorrows to drown' is exactly what it sounds like, unfortunately.

“You have to ignore them, the echoing voices
That cackle and curse as you toil away
Cover your ears and focus on boxes and lines” i think these lines would be more about the nation in which he lives in. The nation is kinda oppressed with the idea of knowledge, wisdom and facts, and for art there is no place. For example there was a festival where one of the characters had to perform a dance for it, but the academia ( something like the main policy) said that this is a waste of time and they forbidden her to perform it. Something the same in here as well, he is a really artistic and talented architect, and you could say he would do everything for his work how some already explained. But the main problem is that he is really “emotionally fragile” how the mentioned character in comments Alhaitham said. Probably one of the main reasons why he is so emotional is because of the death of his father which death he blames on himself, and after some time before completely finishing his studies to become an architect, his mother who raised him all by herself, leaved him alone in sumeru “which is the nation i mentioned before about knowledge and wisdom” and moved to other nation. He blames himself for ruining all his family and when someone gives him at least a little of kindness, he feels urge to pay back, or else he will feel guilty for accepting it for nothing. The smile he always shows to his friends, roommate and other people is a mask he uses to not overwhelm anyone. I think i got a little to deep into the character but i hope this all makes sense. PS: sorry if there is a little mistakes in my grammar, I’m still learning.

I took it as the struggle of an artist to juggle their artistic freedom, the client's request and requirements and the practicality of the project.
Personally, if we take the lyrics litterally for Kaveh, it is too edgy, but if we apply it to artists in general, it fits better.
Kaveh as a character takes pride in being a Master of his craft but his financial situation forces him to take jobs that barely make ends meet due to him giving each job his best usually using his own funds to supplement any deficit. Not only is he a bleeding heart, he also has will rather risk being scammed than not help others.
