Plein Air oil sketch in my garden | garden tap & flowers

  • Hi everyone
Something different this week. The weather was so nice I thought I'd spend an afternoon in my garden doing a plein air oil sketch. The subject I chose was the garden tap & Aquilegia flowers that grow underneath it.
I really enjoyed this challenge - and so did Basil as he snoozed in the sun! I even found out the various names of the lovely pink cottage garden flowers (such as Granny's Bonnet, Aquilegia and Columbine)!
I used a medium sized Rosemary & Co rigger brush, an Ivory flat (also by R & Co) and a cheap medium sized natural bristle round.
Hope you enjoy the video and listening to the garden birds as they go about their business on a May afternoon.
Like the video? Why not buy me a coffee?

Absolutely delightful in it's simplicity! There is beauty in everyday things around us if we stop to observe. That flower is a Columbine. It's a perennial so it will come back year after year! Paint it again next season!

Nice painting. I think garden drawings and paintings are a good idea. Gardens need to be enjoyed and celebrated.

The columbine looked very much at home as did other plants un the garden. These miniature landscapes appear under our noses, and may look simple but are anything but. A good job you are not in Brixham!

I think that flowers can be some of the most difficult things to paint. You did very well though! Great to see everyday things as the subject of art.

Andrew, thank you for another wonderful painting. The subject doesn't matter; it's the mind (heart/soul) that experiences life and passes it on. Well done.

Bird to Basil: "'Ere dog, what's he up to now?" Basil to bird: "Painting a tap." Bird to Basil: "A tap? Is he a bit, um ....?" Basil to bird: "As a box of frogs, yeah. Tee hee." Bird to Basil: "Tee hee!"
Me to Andrew: Well done, I'd never have thought of doing that; AND - I'm not thinking of doing it now, either, but that'll be my lack of imagination.

PS - We have a well in the garden - I hadn't thought of painting that before, but now..... I've never got the right size of board when I need one, but I'll find something: thanks for the inspiration: the idea of a series of small paintings is an appealing one and would suit my declinging physical abilities rather well - frustrating, having to wait to buy or make an appropriate set of boards, but I feel the old oomph coming back and - t'is all your doing.

Lovely idea. Get where you're coming from, a simple subject, being quite difficult. I painted a cup in my garden and it was actually difficult compared to painting animals, flowers, landscape etc. Thanks for the videos they are very inspiring 😊

Often the simplest subjects make a good painting....probably one for the NEAC exhibition.

Interesting new subject. Altough there's no Landscape in it nonetheless it got a sense of Spring from the sunlit Wall and the limegreen foliage. Wouldn't you like to paint that beautiful Rose? Is it an Austin Rose? Basil was really enyoing his sunbath🙂

I love the yellow roses but I tried once before and it wasn't a good result! (they may be Austin and have a beautiful scent)

Love your video as usual Andrew .Thank you.
Andrew ,may I ask you two questions please.
1/ Do you use Artists oil paints ,because I was told there is more colour pigment in them.
2/ I notice that when my oil colours dry they become quite dull and I remember an artist on youtube one time applying some sort of medium over the oil paint to bring up the colours again but without the shine
Would you happen to know the name of this medium.
    Thank you..☘️

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt
      @AndrewBarrowmanArt  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you Rosemary
I do use Artists quality oil paints mainly but have some cheaper student ones for plein air work such as Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow (the bright one) and violet. The Artists paints are loaded with more pigment which actually means you use less paint!
You can go over the finished painting with a matt varnish which will help unify the surface finish
      All the best
      Andrew
