- Some of my favourite sketching media are Casein Paints, Watercolours, Oil Sticks and Art Graf water soluble pigment blocks. In this video I show how I tend to use them - looking through my studio window and sketching the same view with each one.

❤ A most helpful post especially in this long, grey and wet winter. Fascinated by the casein paint, it seems to be much more interesting than gouache which reminds you of primary school! The casein looks to have more life to it and thus practical when wanting to work outside in changing light or weather. All four media had their strong points and I guess the skill comes when you use them to fit the conditions. I do have a battery powered cold hair dryer to reduce the tedious waiting for watercolour to dry. One charge lasts a lot of sketches!

I just saw you on Landscape Artist of the Year. Your piece was beautiful..you were robbed! Love your work, especially the charcoals. You have inspired me to give it a go as you say in the UK. I paint landscapes, but charcoal has always been out of my depth… thanks for the tutorials!

Great video. It was interesting to see the same view in the different mediums and the view in all the different weathers changing the light and colours. It’s something I’ve been trying to do to get into the practice of sketching more, with a view I love from one of our windows as it’s amazing how it changes so much. So it’s nice to see your process to spur me on! 😃

Absolutely love this, such a calming video and it’s wonderful to see you tackle different media side by side. They all looked beautiful, but my favourite study was the oil sticks one, closely followed by the ArtGraf, casein and then the watercolour sketch. So inspiring! And if anyone is pondering whether to order the book, I say go for it! A beautiful collection of oil studies showing how the same scene can be so different depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day.

my favourite thing this winter has been koh-i-noor fx or magic pencils. i've been practicing portraiture and the three colours coming out of the core make it look as if hours of work have gone into it but really it's just getting a face from a magazine and getting something down in tv ad breaks! because they are chunky it's not possible to get bogged down in detail so that has loosened up my process which was the aim. a return to traditional charcoal could be next.

I loved them all and how you tackled the challenges of the different media ; the stand outs for me were the Art Graf because I love to see beautiful drawings, and the oil sticks because I have some which I rarely use, and I feel so inspired by the beautiful sketch you produced using that technique - I'll be getting mine out now!

Hi Andrew ! Your sketches collection " from the window" is impressive as well as for the number and for the proof of variety of colours made by Nature and the variety of the renderings you produced in art with different mediums.
You asked us what are our favourite mediums for sketching. First my favourite sketchbooks are Stillman and Birn Delta ivory paper that I use for studies, not for sketches, I voluntary make a difference between study and sketch. For sketching I can use less pricey paper but for my 200gsm paper is too waving for wet technics.
Outdoor, my favourite mediums are graphite or colour pencils, eventually gouache, or a bit of watercolour. Indoors I don't sketch, only study because I like to go slow, getting a sensitive understanding in everything of the topic ; for this, my favourite will be gouache or soft pastels.
Recently I bought in sale a serie of Sennelier oil pastels but didn't use them yet. For the moment I am so in love with Schminke extra-soft pastels and Caran d'Ache pastel pencils that I am supposed to use them over all 😅.
I end this message by congratulations for the books with a particular attention on the one with Basil cover, of course 😂.

Merci beaucoup Andrew ! Fortunately we have some skills for art and we can forget turmoils while practicing art. It free my mind a lot ! In France, in my area, spring came to say " bonjour" with a beautiful sky and sunny days but reversed to a rather cold week, cloudy and a bit rainy. I think you'd don't mind that because you are able to face any weather 😅. This year I decided to go out more having walk to make some sketches and photos. But what I want the most is to make more and more studies at home to progress. I have A4 Stillman and Birn Delta waiting to be filled ! For now, I am achieving the little piece of inspiration after Berthe Morisot, perhaps I will put another video...

You make me want to take out my oil pastels again, because you handle them so well. Sadly, the memory of how badly I handle them remains with me. I do really like how you stay fresh and loose in your approach, with the use of various media, and I think switching about helps for staying loose and adaptable in one's approach. Hmmm. Maybe I'll just take a look at that oil pastel set again. Thanks for enthusing me about trying them again, with your wonderful studies from the studio. I have the ArtGraf watercolour tin, and I really love using it with Derwent sketching pencils.
Hey Donna, I also like Derwent pencils for sketching and the watersoluble ones can be very interesting. About oil sticks I will buy specific paper or canvas glued on board for studies but will try some sketches (as recommended by an artist) on Bristol paper because they spread easily on it. I would be interested to get some tips from you and Andrew...
Hi Andrew, great vid, as always. Said it before but you've inspired me to sketch outside more often, pen and water colour, or pen and water soluble graphite (Derwent graphitint), for portableness. Just been to St Lucia where there was lots of sketching to be had.

Thank you so much Andrew! This was illuminating. I wasn’t sure about the oil bars but you made a really beautiful and layered sketch. I have to keep practicing with my casein, the smell is a problem for me tho. I need to try my art graphs again!

I don’t have any gouache left anymore. Used to use it for book illustration
I use watercolour and ink as my sketching mediums, although I'm just starting to use gouache lately. Although i do use oils at home i haven't taken them outside to play yet. I can't stand getting my hands too dirty so it's be hopeless with artgraf and oil sticks. Perhaps i should wear gloves😊
Probably best to stay away from oil sticks and charcoal 😃
I don't know if you WERE using Fabriano paper in the end, but it's the one paper I've never got on with, because it buckles if you so much as spit at it.... and I can't paint over buckles: it's hard enough painting on dead flat paper....
It was Fabriano I used as I have 2 huge rolls of it to use up. I like it for dry media and I used it for the oils series but stretched and primed it for those
Hi Andrew! They are all beautiful! Im wondering if it's possible to draw on top of dry oil paint with anything besides oil sticks or pastels? Something with a finer line?
graphite stick or pens would work. I know a lot of artists who use Posca pens

I have recorded the Sky Arts programmes but yet to watch them. I hate the format, and feel for the skilled artist who have to respond to the various interruptions by people who cannot paint or are excellent at patronising. I am often dubious about the criteria used and supposed curators and critics ought to given a brush or pencil so that we can see what they might achieve.

I know what you mean about the criteria etc. I like the program but it is a tv show at the end of the day and very subjective 👍🏻
I suspect you have a very solid following on here which is not susceptible to demands of producers in quite the same way. Given the gradual decline of so much of the output from the 5 main channels, YT has allowed a greater democratic access to areas of interest or excellence ignored by the traditional media. Carry on the posts but may be the Landscape Show may bring your work to a wider audience! I hope so!@@AndrewBarrowmanArt
