During the American revolution Swiss mercenaries fighting with the British picked up on this tune and brought it home to Switzerland where it has developed into our own traditional March "Arabi". It is still played frequently at events such as the Basel Fasnacht.

Erm, it has been 2 years but I can't let this stand as it is. As a fellow Swiss I am sorry to disappoint but Arabi is NOT based on "The Girl I Left Behind". It is, however, based on an even more famous British march: the British Grenadier March!

Sad that we rarely hear beautiful, stirring, tunes line this today. It is so obvious that music like this was written to inspire and uplift the human spirit. Today, these old tunes just remind us of a time that has long since passed.

Brought across The Pond in the dank steerage of coffin ships by Scots and Irish immigrants who had "taken the King's shilling" in the old country and who now sought to acclimate and gain acceptance in their newly adopted homeland via military service, this song became a favorite of the American armed forces, particularly the US Cavalry. It was with this tune that the 7th Cavalry band serenaded "Yellow Hair" Custer and his trooper as they set off on the campaign that would terminate in the rolling hills along the Greasy Grass.

The military song ‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ has both Irish and English origins, depending on the version and the lyrics. According to the web search results, the melody is derived from a traditional Irish melody known as An Spailpín Fánach, meaning “The Wandering Labourer”, which was collected by Edward Bunting in The Ancient Music of Ireland (1840) .

Freedom march song? This song is just a soldier, "bound to Brighton camp" singing about missing his "sally" back home.
